That’s Big news in the badminton world! Of course, We had to discuss it on the pod!
Let us know what you think about this case? Should the federations have so much power? Or should players be able to go Independent whenever they want?

@@aleyaashahira7056 um, the thing about badminton is that sport minister can’t interfere with BAM’s matter. so for them to actually interfere might be because he is our number 1 national player. so whatever it is, even if you hate the minister, he did something. so put your hate aside. tak ada masalah pun kalau dia nak cuba tolong.

In my opinion, even though the badminton federation has to have a strong power, each badminton players should have their opportunity to decide whether they would go independent or not. Since there are few issues with federations these days, I hope there will be better modified policies soon! Good video, and I like it a lot AA!! 👍👍

Thanks God. Today, we are receiving a good news, BAM already giving their blessings for Goh Jin Wei to play badminton independently. What a good ending for all of this saga. Thank you Danes badminton players for voicing out this matter and other international badminton players who continued supporting this matter. It really helped the Malaysian netizens 's petition to be heard and seen by BAM. Thank you all. Even if at the end LZJ need to pay some money for breaching the contract, I hope, he can bear it. Also I hope what already happened will not disturb his performance. Life after leaving BAM might be quite difficult for him in the future, I believe he knows that enough to make this decision. However he takes those challenges to make him better. I know there will be not a right or wrong for this decision. Support all the way for him, and all the players. I really give mad respect for all athletes... You guys are awesome human beings!

No doubt this is the BEST badminton podcast!! Looking forward for the upcoming "season 2" podcast. Regarding the sponsorship, Tai Tzu Ying had sponsored by Victor, but she was wearing Yonex jersey in Tokyo Olympics 2020 because Taiwan national team is sponsored by Yonex. So there is agreement between association and the player for letting them having "independent sponsor".. So let's see how LZJ dealing his sponsorship matter with BAM especially in team event. Independent professional player playing in Malaysia's team event is quite "new" to BAM..and now BAM is considering to have other professional player in the coming team event as well.

A few years back there was a similar situation in korea where they would only admit you to international tournaments if you train at the national centre or if you had passed a certain age (31 or something like that). Having left the national centre, Ko Sung Hyun took this rule to court and won the case, forcing BKA to suspend the regulation and allowing him and the other Korean players to compete independently

BAM made the decision and announced it to the public without even negotiating with the players, and they only found out the same time as the media. One journalist asked if LZJ could pay a huge sum - in the millions as compensation to leave, to which they answered they have not reached 'that stage' yet. They also stressed that they will welcome the players back if they change their mind, so I think it is quite clear by now that they wanted to gauge the reaction and force the players to rejoin if the community were on their side, but unfortunately for them, it did not turn out to be the case. Even the Malaysian government disagreed with the move and decided to intervene.

Lastest news, on 27 Jan 2022, Goh Jin Wei ban has been lifted, she is allowed to continue her career as an independent player.
@davidsu4450
@davidsu4450 2 года назад
In Malaysia, most of the players have been financed by the government which provided everything transfering to BAM account since they were a kid. So BAM invests a huge amount of money for each player. In Malaysia the sponsor will have a business partnership with the federation, you can not have a special sponsor for yourself. It is why so hard for BAM to allow their reputable players to be independent players In Indonesia, most of the players are financed by their own badminton club until they are selected to join the national training center of PBSI (INA Badminton). Players are allowed to have their sponsor as long as the sponsor is not the competitor for PBSI sponsor.

And Malaysians laugh at how Singaporeans suck at sports. I don’t think we had that kind of financial support here in Singapore. Joseph Schooling spent millions financed by his own family. but remember this BAM has nurtured LZJ from the age of 13 can u imagine that?. I'm sure that most players under BAM won't face financial isu because they pay monthly salaries to them. But LZJ baned from playing international was a bad call for sure.
@kelven713
@kelven713 2 года назад
I don't think LZJ leaving BAM is entirely motivated by monetary alone. Yes, the sponsorship deal is rumored to have a bigger deal but I believe he had issues with the BAM system and that's why having made the decision to leave. No perfect system in the world but I totally agreed with both of you in the sense that there should be a buyout clause just like the contract clause in football for the player to embark on a different direction. Many of the players go independent in Malaysia after not being able to receive contract extensions or wanting to move in a different direction. This happened to Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Kiat when they wanted to continue to be paired together but BAM wanted to split them and there's a financial repercussion to it which eventually forced them to go independent a while before retiring. So the 1st case of player going independent to such high ranking player in Malaysia.

Badminton in the west, for the most part, is still portrayed as a "laxed" sport. A sport that people perceive as fun and not in any way a competitive sport that you can build a successful career out of. I think BWF just isn't marketing badminton well enough to the rest of the world. Maybe they should invite Netflix to produce something similar to F1's Drive to Survive to increase international exposure.
@miaouscleaumonocle
@miaouscleaumonocle 2 года назад
It can be even worse than that... In France, a 'minor' nation in badminton (with all due respect to our athletes), for many people badminton is not even perceived as fun, to the contrary... Badminton is one of these sports almost every kid will encounter in compulsory PE at school, and it often leaves bad memories for those who did not enjoy the game. It is probably one of the sports that has the worst 'conversion' rate (= number of kids who discover the sport in PE and then choose to enrol in a club outside of school) among those typical PE class sports. Even I, who now enjoys playing badminton in club as a grown-up, had negative memories from badminton in PE class.
@elvis4868
@elvis4868 2 года назад
@@miaouscleaumonocle I feel like badminton also has a problem where you have to be at a certain level to really enjoy and appreciate the sport, for example basketball ot can be fun just to throw the ball through the hoop but in badminton techniques are required and of course smashing the shuttle gives a next level amount of dopamine

hey anders and hans, so many things happening in this podcast and so many things i would like to say to you but this one is the most important for me Please dont lose hope (38:55) i really think that you guys (the top players) can change the system. i mean just look at the situation with lzj. of course this is just one thing you guys could change but its a beginning. you, anders are about to hit 100000 subs at youtube and you have 258k followers on insta. that means something. if more top players of different countries would unite and all would comment to their followers, what they think is worng with the bwf it would create a huge wave of critisism by the public (just like with lzj). that is one positive site of the age of social media :D all in all a very interesting episode as allways. keep it up you guys and dont lose hope :)

Thank you AA and HK for always bringing up important matters around badminton. I do think that BWF needs to promote the sport much much better. Even just starting from the live broadcasts, most tournaments are never broadcasted from the starting round and not all courts are broadcasted. So for fans whose countries don’t always make it to the quarter finals and above they don’t get to watch their countries being broadcasted most of the times. Secondly, make interesting contents on youtube which will attract new audience. I think the Wonderplay channel by yonex korea is a great example of this. BWF can try doing similar things in different countries. BWF should also reach out for promotions to countries in which badminton is not that big yet. Do local events, connect with local badminton clubs, and do event promotions. The sport itself is a really great sport but if BWF doesn’t do a great work promoting it then it will stay stagnant and won’t get bigger.

So many good points to think about and discuss. 😃 For the popularity thing, I guess it is way more popular in Asia than other parts of the world and probably thats why there is not much money coming in unlike Tennis. Also, popularity wise, it is more to do with popular as a past time and not so much as a career choice as compared to sports like football or tennis.

So I clearly don't think that the management of BAM did not expect the worst scenario. Just my personal opinion, might not be the truth.😅

cmiiw pbsi have the same sponsorship system with BAM before, and it changed to individual sponsorship around 2013/2014. Hendra setiawan and markis kido left the national training centre due to contract money disagreement with them. Marcus gideon left the national training centre on 2013 because pbsi didnt register him and his partner to all england tournament when they registered other pair with lower rank, gideon send a formal letter asking for pbsi reason/explaination and they answered because gideon and his partner didn't have "prospect", the coach didn't like gideon acted like that (sending letter) and gave him cold shoulder, didnt train him seriously, only basic training not even play badminton, after this incident gideon left. Thats how terrible if federation have too much power over player, pbsi and national training centre has become so much better now.

Playing professional or having looser control by the association is something yearned for by Indonesian player as well. First was the direct contract with sponsorship with players, which was only given since 2011. Many associations still became intermediary with sponsors. At least according to inside scoop, many Indonesian players were actually interested with the "half professional" arrangement of PBSI with Hendra Setiawan/Muhammad Ahsan. Though they have the benefit of already well known.
