A good step towards controlling our speech is to monitor the source of our speech which is our thoughts. It’s important to observe patterns in our thoughts and to correct ourselves when we’re out of line. We’re all guilty from time to time of slipping into victim thought patterns or self righteous thought patterns or vindictive thought patterns. Our thoughts are not offensive, but they are the source of our offensive words and actions. If we quietly, internally keep check on our tendency to give our voices to unhelpful trains of thought, the need for external policing of our behaviour will be a lot less.

The way I have explained our Rights protected FROM government, not granted BY government: We have the freedom protected from government intervention in our lawful speech, (speech that does not encroach upon another's protected liberties) however we do not have liberty to the exemption of the RESPONSIBILITY of that speech. Example; You do not have to ask for permission to shout fire in a crowded theater, yet doing so does not exempt you from the responsibility of having done so. Rights ALWAYS go hand in hand with responsibilities.👍

One of the things I struggle with is road rage. How to stay calm when a person cuts me off in traffic or whatever the case. I have trouble staying calm and letting things go. That’s the beautiful thing about it though. You don’t have to agree with Dewayne, (on many things I certainly don’t) but his viewpoint is free and his guidance is free, and it’s given in a calm, neutral manner that gives respect and simply asks for respect back. My feeling is you should just take what feels right to you and apply it to your own life. I think everyone’s personal philosophy on all things ultimately comes down to a mix of introspective thought as well as magpie style pinching of the various ideas and concepts we hear around us. Whatever we feel is right. If we all did that with neutral respect (with some exceptions of course, but speaking in general) for other people’s ideas and views then I think the world would be a much better place.

Well said Dewayne…. Delivered with respect and good humor. There is a lot of bad inconsiderate behaviour out there, people focussing on their rights and freedoms, and not considering the impact of their behaviour on others. With rights also come responsibilities. Has anyone noticed that the tongue is the smallest muscle of the body that causes the most damage… a little kindness, respect and hitting the pause button on the tongue can go a long way to making a better world…. Why make an enemy when you can make a friend? Here are a few of our “family sayings” that still apply today … “Choose with care the words you speak… they may be the ones you have to eat.” “ There is a reason that you have two eyes, two ears and only one mouth… so that you can watch and listen twice as much as you speak. “Least said, least mended.” Thanks again Dewayne for giving us the sensible, cowboy /wrangler take on these matters. It is something that we definitely take for granted with freedom of speech in this country when you look at the rest of the world. Few other countries have that trait and yet folks willingly sign it away in some cases here in the United States. Heck, you could even make the argument that the freedom of speech is actively being censored at the moment. In any case, awesome video!

i've always had a quick tongue and i get people upset with witty quips often. this video actually opened my eyes to how unnecessary and also how lucky i have been to not cause harm to anyone but myself with my words. thank you, Duane.

I mean, if someone is verbally attacking you and the only thing you can do is run away, that means you lost your ground.

@@n4ughty_knight Well yeah, if there is a clear moral problem happening than there are stakes at hand. There are also a lot arguments that are pedantic, fueled from reasons not tied to the conflict at hand. I see no reason to stand up to the latter. The latter is a low returns time sink.

Excellent point! What is also very important to understand is that the US bill of rights was not intended to be incorporated to the states. Many do not understand that the general government of the United States is the creature of the states. Not the creator. That is why all states have their own constitution and bill of rights.
