I sat down with the Distinguished Professor of German & Emeritus, Dr. Rolf Goebel from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (www.uah.edu/ahs/departments/w...) to discuss The Life, Poetry, and Philosophy of Friedrich Hölderlin. Dr. Goebel was able to take us through Hölderlin's life with a detailed biography, followed by an in-depth understanding of Hölderlin's influences, friends, and the notorious period of Hölderlin's mental illness.
We discussed at length Hölderlin's deep philosophical understanding of Poetic production, Freedom, Unity, Intellectual Intuition, and the connection between the Subject and Object.
Dr. Goebel also reads and explains in an exegetical fashion what each line and stanza means in two of Hölderlin's poems; an early poem, "To the Fates," and a late poem, "Autumn." The Selected Poems can be found in the Penguin edition of Friedrich Hölderlin: Selected Poems and Fragments, (1998). The Poems were read in both English and German. You can follow Dr. Goebel's work at www.researchgate.net/profile/...

Fantastic....ive come here via my Vedantic roots...searching western spiritually and stumbled on the idealist philosophers and got intrigued by the name Holderlin that kept cropping up...but never elucidated. You are doing a great service to bring these people into English speaking world....especially at this time. Thankyou

Thank you for your interest in our video! One mark of exceptional writers like Hölderlin is that they allow a wide range of readers from different cultures to explore their own aesthetic, spiritual, and political interests through an intense immersion in the writings of these classical figures. So I hope that reading Hölderlin, who mentions India sporadically as an inspiration for European culture, will somehow appeal to your Vedantic roots!

Prof. Goebel so kindly offered us a wealth of insight into the musicality of Holderings poetry, philosophy and apperception of Beying in nature and identity, and why we always crave after the (withdrawn) gods of ancient Greece. And somewhat unexpectedly, it helped me to understand so much better Heidegger’s Beitraege zur Philosophie (vom Ereignis). Thank you both!

Precious insights from Prof. Goebel ,especially with regard to the musicality of Holderlin's poetry. Has he published anything in English on the poet. Wonderful interview - thank you.

Thank you for your kind words about our video; sorry to respond so late! You are quite right: Hölderlin's affinity with music, song, and auditory experiences are at the core of his poetry and his Hyperion novel. Since you asked for my publications on Hölderlin in English, here is one of my latest efforts: “‘Die Saitenspiele ergossen sich über mein Innres’: Hölderlin’s Auditory Atmospheres.” Goethe Yearbook, vol. 29. Ed. Patricia Anne Simpson and Birgit Tautz. Rochester, NY: Camden House, 2022. 149-65. I hope you'll enjoy it!

Hey, Jess! Thanks so much for the message. It really means a lot. I am just trying to create good philosophical content on both German Idealism and German Romanticism. I am glad you enjoyed the video. My future plan is to get Dalia Nassar for my Novalis video! I hope all is well with you!

Fantastische! Read some Hölderlein a while ago. Also came to him through Heidegger. This has inspired me to go back to Friedrich. The discussion sparked so many thoughts and multiple connections to others; particularly, even possible relations with Bulgakov. Beautiful!

Amazing video! Glad to see a discussion on Hölderlin. Do you think you’ll ever discuss Novalis? Still trying to wrap my head around their ‘Fichte studies’

@@TheYoungIdealist I second this (Jess from YorkU here haha) I read Novalis in my german romanticism lit class and loved Heinrich von Ofterdingen. I would love to hear an unpacking of such elusive writing.

@@JessTheory Thank you for your comment, sorry to reply so late! It is interesting that you and another commentator mention Novalis in connection with Hölderlin. They are in many ways quite different; Hölderlin drew much inspiration from an idealized view of Greek antiquity, while Novalis was very interested in the Middle Ages. But there share many other features; one that come to my mind immediately is the typically Romantic typos of a poetic desire for the open, the faraway, the unknown.

@@RolfGoebelI am here because of my interest in George MacDonald. He was accused by his parishioners of listening to the “ Germans” too much, referring to Schelling, Goethe and others, but he was particularly taken with Novalis. He even published a translation of Hymns to the Night. I wonder if you are familiar with George MacDonald? In any case, I am thoroughly enjoying your passion for these poets, Holderlin and Rilke. Thank you so much.

Illuminating, stimulating, fascinating.Viewers may be interested to know that the Heidegger scholar,Richard Capobianco, has a chapter on the Autumn poem discussed here in his book Heidegger's Way of Being, and talks about it on RU-vid.It's beautiful.

a very interesting video with a very informative presentation of Hölderlins philosophical thought. Just one fun fact about Tübingen: the philosophical seminar of the university Tübingen is directly next to the so-called Hölderlin-Turm, the tower Hölderlin lived in.

Thanks for your response, which I saw just now. You're right: The old part of Tübingen, a city mercifully spared by large-scale WWII bombings, assembles many buildings the poet knew in less than a square mile or so. Visiting the city and walking in Hölderlin's presumed footsteps brings the atmosphere of his stays there magically to life!

Thank you for your comment! Hegel, Hölderlin, and Schelling were roommates at the Stift and inspired one another's philosophical thoughts. One of those magical confluences of great importance to German Idealism and beyond!

I have tried to find a link to his complete poetry but cannot find it. Do you happen to have that information? I am a poet myself and don't speak German but wanted to study his meter and flow. Especially his later works. Unfortunately, the English resources are minimal. Thank you!

Hello TuneInSundays, the edition that I used for this video and that Dr. Goebel, stated was a good translation of his work is the current penguin edition entitled: Selected Poems and Fragments: Dual-Language Edition Trans. Jeremy Adler and Michael Hamburger. It has most of his work. I highly recommend it. I hope this helps!

You may have already tracked down some English versions of Holderlin, but you may be interested to know that Blooodaxe have published a much expanded version of David Constantine's Holderlin:Selected Poetry.Constantine 's translations provide an interesting contrast to Michael Hamburger, and both should be certainly be read.
