Since filming this, it’s confirmed Arrow’s set has more bonus features. If that’s important to you, maybe hold out for that. This is still a gorgeous set though!

What are your thoughts on A24's practice of not selling standard edition 4K discs of some of these titles in the US? I'd love to get The Lighthouse and the Director's Cut of Midsommar in 4K, but I'm not interested in paying double for premium packaging. (Note: They *did* do a standard 4K release of The Green Knight, alongside their premium edition)

@@jonathoncosgrove1471 some of this isn’t decided by A24. The way I believe it works is that Lionsgate has first home video rights. So they decide what format to release on initially. Then years later the rights expire and A24 gets them back and does their own collectors edition if they think the movie will sell.

Got mine last week and am loving it - hands down my favorite Eggers film of his "The" trilogy. Came with a cool postcard featuring Beau is Afraid too! Now just waiting for A24 to release a EEAAO Collector's Edition.

Mine came in last week and if I may say, shopping from the A24 webstore is a great experience. The films came in bespoke cardboard boxes and the receipt came in a classy black sleeve. A little extra that's appreciated! The Lighthouse was one thing I didn't want to leave to chance so I preordered. The VVhich sold out really fast and I had to import it from ss. Two of my favorite films of the last few years.

@MonkeyspankO You actually got lucky with The Witch. A while back during a podcast, Robert Eggers talked about how he disliked the 4K release for the film, since the HDR grading was done with no involvement from either him or his cinematographer. He strongly felt that the colors, lighting, etc didn't represent the work they had done, and recommended everyone to only watch the 1080p version because of that. So when Second Sight was going to release their 4K, they called Eggers to supervise a new HDR grading, one which would actually respect his vision/creative intent.

Technically, this is even more square than 4:3. It’s 1.19:1! Much like some of the earliest films from the silent era, 1890s, when this was set.

Great review again, Jeff. I love the A24 Collector's Editions. I enjoy having the extra of a beautifully crafted, designed, typeset book. To me, it adds a lot value to the experience of having / watching film on physical media. It's something special when re-visiting a film and going through something special before or after watching.

I know people complain about the oversized format of these releases, but if I’m buying the movie on a high quality format it’s nice to get it in a high quality package. These sets are beautifully executed and worth the investment.

I ordered mine and it should be here in a few days or so. I did not know about an Arrow version coming out. I might have to look into getting that one for the special features as I wasn’t aware of an Arrow version until this video. The Lighthouse is my favorite film of 2019, so I might not mind having multiple versions of The Lighthouse. Thanks for the overview Jeff, take care!

Good review Jeff! In my case, being in EU, I'll get the Arrow version. With shipping, I think the price was 30 gbp. And while I love A24 and their collector's releases, the shipping to EU is sooo esxpensive, that makes the Arrow release a no brainer. We are talking about more than 100usd final price, considering that the 4K version is $47 + about $40 of shipping + import tax. Tipically I make one order per year to A24, but the last one was recently, so is a long time until my next order.

I went with the Arrow version. I just don't have room for these big A24 editions and want just a standard case on the shelf. I wish A24 would release standard editions and collector's editions in limited quantity for the people that like the extra packaging.

All 4Ks are region free. There are a few exceptions but they were weird Australian releases and it hasn't happened since. Blu-rays are still region locked but if all you care about is the 4K, you are safe.

Yeah Bryan you can view the 4k disk on your region A player but of course to watch the blu ray you will need region b capability. Which im sure you already knew

Jeff, which would you say has a better audio commentary? That's all I really want it for. I would watch it again for that, but way down the line. I love weird movies, but this weirded me out a little too much I just want to get behind the scenes on it once I heard Pattinson tell Robert to send him the weirdest script he's ever written and he would be in the movie. P.S. The Northman is in my top movies list for sure.

I did not like the witch at all. Ended up pre ordering arrows lighthouse because I can't do that big ass case. I've never seen the movie, but figured I'd give this guy another shot and hopefully I'll enjoy it! Side question, since you own a C2, there's no way you don't experience auto dimming, right? I highly doubt it's a situation where only some of the tvs have it and others don't. I've looked it up online and it's a widespread issue. Even hdtvtest mad a video mentioning how their 2023 lineup finally fixed the issue. How do you counter this annoyance? Because I'd have to imagine for a movie like the lighthouse, it's gonna be auto dimming.

I have to say I was excited to see The Northman and bought the 4k disc and I was very disappointed. Just lots of screaming and yelling and weird rituals and really not a good story. The cinematography was good though but really that's it. I haven't seen the Witch yet though. I did love Hereditary Thanks Jeff for recommending that it was a good horror movie even though I'm not big on horror.

I saw this movie in theaters and it looked phenomenal, and while I was happy to own it on Blu-ray when it came out, it just didn't compare to the quality of the image I saw in the theater. I'm hoping this 4K version stacks up better to the theatrical experience I had. I went with the Arrow 4K release. The packaging looks much nicer, has more bonus features, and it isn't in some extra tall packaging I need to store awkwardly somewhere. It's also cheaper, even with importing from the UK. I just don't like A4's large packaging or their price point, and using some production drawing as the cover art is an odd choice and doesn't look very nice to me. I can tell they put some love and effort into the release, but I personally think Arrow beat them by quite a bit.

I personally loved the A24 exclusive packaging. Its so sleek and stylish with very solid material. With Arrow I have several Box sets like that of many movies including Arrow.
