I have a feeling "Superluv" ended up being way more honest than Shane Dawson meant it to be. I think it unintentionally shows that the relationship Dawson's character is offering is probably just as toxic as the physically abusive people he's supposed to "save" the girl from. This video and song are an unsettling look inside the fantasy life of the NiceGuy™. To the protagonist, sex and relationships are transactional: if I remove your abuser, you owe me affection. Most obviously, the lyrics are all about literally fighting to possess the love interest. This is the core of the transactionality that underlies the whole package: 'your love is a prize; if I win you, you belong to me'. There is no interest or concern for what the girl herself wants and thinks. The speaker doesn't even promise better treatment than she got from her boyfriend, only that he is going to "make you mine". The rescue fantasy itself has value to the 'hero', but the personhood of the 'princess' is unimportant and incidental. Dawson's character in the video is set in opposition to the love interest's abusive boyfriend, the implication being that he himself would never abuse her. And yet, not only do we never see or hear anything to demonstrate or even directly claim that, he actually "saves" the girl through violence by beating the unholy shit out of the boyfriend. Each time the superhero persona comes out, he immediately tries to physically hurt someone. Also check out the framing starting at 14:46 -- the 'hero' is shot straight on from below, making him seem larger, more powerful, dominating, even a little confrontational. The love interest, in contrast, is shot from above and little behind, so she seems weaker, smaller, vulnerable, almost prey-like. It's the kind of cinematography used in slasher films when the killer ambushes a victim. Though the rest of the video's shots range from 'incompetent' to the dizzying heights of 'bland-but-functional', this scene stands out like a visual Freudian slip. The whole thing strikes me as a creepy example of white-knight flavored male gaze. The love interest is a prop to make the protagonist look like a nobler person, nothing more.

When you break it down I realized Shane knows nothing about filming/film making. He doesn’t know how to make a cohesive story line for anything. It’s always 500 ideas that never come to fruition crammed in a 7 minute video.

Embarrassingly enough, I watched Shane and his vlogs fairly regularly back when he was releasing all of this music. And he regularly vlogged about how he went to professional vocal training to improve his voice. So this was all very intentional and he was very proud of all the songs he released in terms of them sounding professional and high quality. 😬

I just wanna say, Shane's look isn't goth, it's emo, and I embarrassingly enough actually dressed like that in middle school. I graduated in 2012 when this was made and emo was already uncool, and had been a couple years.

I think as a kid because I was raised in an abusive home, I was pretty much Shane's target audience. If I had seen this music video when I was 12 I would've really fallen in love with his content. Not because it was good, but because the idea of being "saved" from whatever vague threat was in my life gave me the hint of the love that I was missing. This kind of content, especially from someone as toxic as Shane, is especially dangerous.

I just remembered that Shane wrote this song about a youtuber friend that he had a crush on and thought she liked him but then she kind of set him straight and said she was dating someone else. I think I also remember the youtuber’s boyfriend played the abusive ex in this video (or I could be thinking of a totally different video) which was intentional on Shane’s part. Kind of makes the video seem like a huge “nice guy” project.
