It's only natural. High revs mean high sound frequency, so the meanest sounding engines have the highest displacement and relatively low revs. In this aspect, formula 1 hasn't got anything on aero engines. :-D

loved this era of F1 racing with front engine monsters turning achievable revs. It went nuts once rear engines came in and some of the adventure was lost as the speeds got right out of hand and the death toll mounted. that was the time of division from Euro F1 and circle track North American racing. I think it was a different era for sure and all the advances, spectacular as they were w may not have been for the best. Good video. Thanks

Of course the Auto Union V-16 Gran Prixcars from the 1930s only had a a redline of 5000 revs or so. The engine had one of the most unusual valve trains in racing history. The intake valves were opened by a single centerly located camshaft in a SOHC configuration. The same camshaft opened the exhaust valves via pushrods.

Those later in the video look like toy cars. about the middle of the video those cars sounded like they had much larger engines than they had. I used to drive a 1998 Ford ZX2 Escort and it red lined at 8,500 rpm, more than almost all of the engines in this video. With it's 5 speed transmission it was so much fun to drive in LA traffic being not so wide as most cars and very responsive power. I like the clean look of the 60s F1 cars. They aught to take all the aero crap off the new cars and lower the maximum weight back to about 1,000 kg. Give them a 3.5 or maybe 4.0 inch stroke requirement and maybe 3 liters total displacement and naturally aspirated and a maximum of 5 forward gears and no DRS and no ERS. They aren't supposed to be street cars, they should be the most exciting fast things on 4 wheels that turn both left and right, not hybrids or electric, not demonstration models for new street car tech, and they shouldn't need a special system to help pass the guy in front of you.
