O think as well, part of the blame also lies in attributing the success of a piece of art solely on one person. A movie doesn't just have a director, it's got actors, editors, writers, cinematographers, animators, camera crew, hair and makeup artists and many more people. Art isn't the lone endeavour by one person, it's a team effort. (Even if it's just you and the person supporting you emotionally) Anyway, that's sort of the problem with auteur theory.
@BethNote
@BethNote 6 лет назад
@ClandestineOstrich no yes I agree. I think when you appreciate that a work is made by multiple people, you can gain even a little bit of appreciation for poorly made art. For example, I hate Asylum of the Daleks, it's one of the worst episodes of Moffat era who in my opinion. But the directing and cinematography is really good, and as always Murray Gold knocked it out the park. Unfortunately Success might be a team effort, but failure may be a lone endeavour....at least when it comes to art.

It's not just screen writers, it's book writers too. I call it Morbus Jordan after Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time series. Prominent victims of that disease are George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss. It's when the start of a multi book series is a tight, promising story with interesting characters and then the rambling and meandering sets in and gets worse and worse until the whole thing is a totally bloated MESS

Poor, poor Padme indeed. She was my favorite in the prequels. Loved whenever media about the prequels would deal mostly with her. Yeah whenever I write, my work is at its best when people beta read and give creative input into it. Hope that anyone putting work out there does the same.

Surely the best example of George Lucas going off the rails creatively is him single handedly destroying the Howard the Duck franchise? Modestly successful comic, a film adaptation bad enough to cause the book to be cancelled.
@aurorauplinks
@aurorauplinks 4 года назад
why was it modestly succesful? maybe it was not all that succesful at all and they were just tolerating it to give its film a chance and the film was its only hope and not the comics or film couldnt save it because people werent interested in duck cops? just a wild guess.... no ones picked it up... so pick it up... show us how its better if you do it? or anyone show us.... just someone save that series and turn it into a good film series

You make a very good point. I don’t know if you’re a Game of Thrones fan but I kind of think the same thing is happening with that. The series is not as good as it used to be and this video got me thinking that the issue is probably the same - the early seasons were so well received that the writers thought they didn’t need George RR Martin’s (author of the source material) input anymore. Turns out they did.

Actually the Fundamental problem with your whole thesis is thinking Lucas had an "Editor" on the original Trilogy, he did not. He wound up largely funding the movies himself, the entirety of what makes Star Wars special was that Lucas artistic vision was truly unhindered. A new Video Essay just came out called "The Prequels are better movies then you deserve".

I honestly can't get over how badly this video aged. The Sequel Trilogy is a complete mess and kids who grew up with the prequels are now adults and proudly defending them on the Internet. Chris Chibnells Doctor Who has become far worse than Moffets ever was in both ratings and fan reactions. With the Timeless Children pretty much breaking the show's entire lore. And shut up about the whole "Marsha Lucas saved Star Wars in the edit!" That's just stupid.

Seasons five and six of Doctor Who are honestly my favorite of the reboot and season 10 is also pretty good. I think my biggest problem with seasons 7-9 isn't the silly story arcs ( I do agree that they're pretty ridiculous, though I don't really mind Doctor Who being schlocky), but that the relationship between the Doctor and his champion (ie Clara) isn't well written. It doesn't feel like the Doctor and Clara have a reason to care about each other or that grow as people in an interesting or compelling way, which isn't the case with Amy/Rory/Bill. Maybe you talk about this in your other videos, which is why I'm going to watch the rest of your stuff now since this one was really enjoyable

It's important to remember that editorial oversight doesn't always improve a work; many times, it results in far poorer storytelling. This is a huge problem in Hollywood where corporate overlords exact tight control. The literary world is better but shows signs of the same issues. Ultimately, both collaborative and auteur storytelling have their strengths and weaknesses. Auteurs shine with originality and vision but can struggle with self-absorption and the more mechanical elements of story. This isn't always bad; often it just means that a writer's work will appeal to a smaller demographic. Collaborative teams are great at achieving balance and bringing varied skills to the table but they often fall into the traps of laziness and formula. Plenty of "professional" studio films are widely considered to be unwatchable. Telling a great story is extremely difficult whether you're working alone or in a group.

I think you can add DB Weiss and David Benioff of Game of Thrones to this list as well. Early seasons were heavily tied to the books with (we're told) a lot of input from George RR Martin regarding the things that were necessary to change. Seasons One and Two were held to a budget, but by the time Season Three rolled around the show was a runaway success and HBO basically took the reigns off (and it shows by the drastic upswing in the number of effects used). Then by Season Five, they started running out of source material and Martin's apparent involvement seems to diminish... the show's quality declines precipitously... you see where this story is going.

I want to give Weiss & Benioff the benefit of the doubt. They have to adapt books that haven't been written yet.

Personally, I love all Star Wars, but can acknowledge their various faults. Before the Prequels came out, they rereleased the original trilogy in theaters, which is how I first saw them. Then when we came home from the first episode we turned on the TV to watch Muppet Show reruns and lo and behold they had the Mark Hamill episode playing. I was totally swept into the mania. I was 13ish? I checked Star Wars books out without any guidance on what to read when. I love the Prequels. I loved Pod Racing and played the crud out of the N64 game. I even enjoy the new movies! Also, Voyager was the Star Trek I grew up with. It was something the drew my family together. Whenever I was grounded, I was still allowed to watch Star Trek. Now, on rewatches it's pretty cringey. But I still love it. All in all. Big agree on keeping editors and co-collaborators to keep some people in check. In the show M A S H eventually Alan Alda, who played Hawkeye, became show runner. And older episodes are noticeably different. The episodes get more Hawkeye focused, and the episodes are heavier.

Strange, because I always felt that Roddenberry himself was the "Lucas" of Star Trek. TNG seasons 1 and 2 are basically his "prequel trilogy" in a creative sense. There is no example of Trek that Gene had more control of than early TNG, and it was... pretty bad.
@histguy101
@histguy101 6 лет назад
Roddenberry pitched a tv show to a Network. Lucas is a filmmaker who built up his own production company, special effects house, computer and video game developer, animation studio, etc. He owned his Star Wars movies. He funded them as his own projects, all except for A New Hope. He also wrote all six movies.
@Kuudere-Kun

I'm a Star Wars fan because of the Prequels, they are inherently better and more interesting to me. The Phantom Menace's story arc is Padme's story. The philosophical moral you're going for is that ti's bad to let artists actually have full creative control of their art. And that self contained stories are better then ongoing saga. Both fundamentally opposed to what I want form fiction. For most of human history Editors weren't a thing. But now it's a sign of some blasphemous arrogance for someone to think they don't need one. And the Prequel haters are only a loud minority. The majority loved the Prequels, but for ages the Internet only gave a voice to negativity.
@fandommusings5302
@fandommusings5302 5 лет назад
For most of human history, individuals did not own stories. Stories were created and retold orally countless times, changed slightly with each retelling. The idea of any 1 person having full control and authority over a story is a very modern idea.

Honestly as someone who has only seen series six onwards in their entirety, as much as I like the show I don't like what Moffat does with the characters. I liked Amy and Rory in series six but then he ruined them come the following series. Same with Clara. I love and adored the way she was handled in series seven and the 50th anniversary and 2013 Christmas specials but then series eight happened and she became a completely different character who I didn't like. It doesn't help that see had a forced romance plot that I feel weakened her character. The Clara I loved in her first series/those first specials isn't the same character as she was post 11. Yeah her relationship with 12 gets better but I feel like she lost what made me like her once 11 left. That said, as much as I'm not a fan of the first half of series seven/series eight and nine it had its moments. Series ten was good mostly due to the relationship between 12 and Bill though I didn't really care for a lot of the stories themselves and Bill only getting one season sucks. Here's hoping series eleven is better than the past few years have been.

I liked but I did not love sw episodes 1-3. Yes I know they are not as good as 4-6 the original movies but I don’t think they are rubbish. I may be alone but I did like the bunta race as I found it amusing to watch. Yes jar jar was a fool but I don’t hate the character he is there as comic relief. Ok the6 may have gone but too far but I don’t see that as a reason to hate the character. The hobbit wasn’t perfect but many middle earth fans still watch it. Making movies in a different time understand different budgets and different staff, actors etc. Makes for a different feel to a movie. I take movies for what they are and if I found them amusing, interesting, educational, emotional then I’ll watch again. I liked the new fantastic beasts movies. Not to the extent of Harry Potter but enough that I get excited when one is coming to the cinema and I need to buy the tickets then months later the dvd. We can’t blame writers for not being perfect and Lucas jus5worked with what he had. It wasn’t entirely his fault about what he did or didn’t have. We take the franchise as a whole and asa whole starwars is a huge, profitable, interesting story.

Yeah people don't understand how much of all the first 6 films were George Lucas. Down to much of the editing (especially on Empire Strikes Back), he wrote 3/5 of the screenplays for Empire Strikes Back before Lawrence Kasdan, and was making sure everyone had a solid idea of exactly what he wanted. People like Gary Kurtz, Irvin Kershner, and Lawrence Kasdan had their input, but many times were shot down by Lucas (for instance Kasdan wanted to kill Luke in Return of the Jedi and have Leia take over, and another of his ideas was to have Luke kill Vader, then take the mask to trick to Emperor before killing him...)
@aurorauplinks
@aurorauplinks 4 года назад
he actually had to work hard to fund his films, he was the budget. so he worked and worked and worked throwing all those millions of dollars together, and he didnt just grow that money, he had to earn it. so yes... he had his whole corporation working to make the money for those films. He earned the budget to make the films.... he didnt just apply for money. he even sacrificed some future earnings of empire to get a loan from the bank which required FOX to basically do it which meant he lost a huge chunk of funding but he fought for every penny he kept for the next film. because he earned it through every method he could. he didnt just sign a piece of paper and get billions of dollars... 40 to 60 years of life long work doing art and industrial light and magic for other peoples films including for star trek, he helped write countless side ideas for many stories including star trek, who do you think helped make teriminator 1 and 2 behidn the scenes? ILM and who was there working with the set and the director and actors? who do you think would be there.. why do you think everyone that spends time with him loves him... except that one editor from one of the early films... but they are slowly healing that relationship somehow perhaps

Your Thesis is heavily damaged by all of the missinformation present in your Lucas segment. I’m sure you weren’t aware that it was missinformation, but it is nonetheless. The production of the original Star Wars films was not saved by other people outside of George’s control. This is a historical re-write promoted by people who find it easier to believe that George was never talented in the first place rather than that he made some bad choices later in his career. George Lucas is overrated as a story teller and as a film maker. I am truly amazed at how urban myth has granted this clown “legendary” status. Lucas stole the basic premise of Star Wars from the Japanese film maker Kurosawa and his epic “The Hidden Fortress”. Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz knew of Kurosawa’s work and he immediately recognized the similarities. He told Lucas that he had to change the screenplay or risk a plagiarism suit. His friends Ford Coppola and Spielberg offered criticisms and input which Lucas then took back and made his revisions. Coppola was the one who completely re-edited the epic opening crawl of Star Wars, because Lucas’ version was so convoluted. Yes, Francis Ford Coppola of The Godfather fame wrote the opening crawl of Star Wars 1977. The most critically acclaimed film in the Star Wars saga is Empire Strikes Back and it was written by Lawrence Kasden, not George Lucas. And that same movie was directed by Irvin Kershner, not George Lucas. Coincidence? After seeing the garbage that Lucas created with the prequel films, I would say “Not”.

"Star wars is a bad franchise" nope. Badly run franchise? Sure. Bad franchise? nope. Star Wars is about as good as a franchise can get (I mean the MCU exists but like that's a whole other kettle of fish) George Lucas is far from a terrible director and creator, he created star wars (With heavy influences and oversights obviously) and eventually tweaked it to the point (with help obviously) we're still talking about it 4 decades later. The Prequels are far from good but George Lucas's work on the clone wars series (3D not 2D) shows what he can do with a good creative team around him.

I'd say the prequels had a great story to tell, but failed in the execution. There are plenty of star wars comics worth a read even if you don't like star wars off the top of my head the most recent darth vader series is fantastic. Video Games wise I'd say the KOTOR series if you like RPGs, if not there's something star wars in video games for you. Sadly Star wars never went the anime route (though is heavily inspired by it, can't remember the TV/film series but there was one that basically had the plot of star wars like 2- 3 years before ANH came out) but I guess the new animated series is anime inspired....might be worth looking into? Star Wars is definitely not a franchise for everyone, but I'd bet there's at least one Star Wars story everyone can enjoy.
