This climb is the epitome of epic adventure in the rock climbing genre, Boulder CO Style. A wild down climb on a hugely exposed knife edge ridge is just the beginning. . . then comes a thin and even more exposed & scantly protected traverse across the north face. Dare I say this route is a bit sand bagged for the difficulty if you power over the well protected overhang as we did in the video, safety first, LOL. Finally, there's a small respite as you enjoy the expansive views while ascending the flying ramp like east side of this flatiron. It's just enough time to chill out before the monster rappel, akin to a Space Walk, with only one thin line connecting you to life itself as you go into orbit, touching down on that same razor thin edge you came in on! A final big vertical rappel lands you right next to your pack where you stashed your gear on the way up. KICK-ASS!

I did this exact route in 1974 as a high schooler (BHS). I remember the exposure made a not very hard climb quite hard. I got sewing machine legs it was so scary.

So wicked awesome cool! I assume you also use the GoPro 360… can I ask, what “map" program/app are you using for the beginning editing of your amaziing videos, please. Very impressed with your editing and videoing of these amazing places you hike/climb/bike. Cheers🍻

Big thanks brother!! The topo maps are straight Google Earth, but it takes a lot of editing to get them synced up with music and follow-on footage. Really appreciate your comments and your support! 👍👍

@@KarlDeckerPresents so I after commenting back to you I go back to RU-vid to watch some more videos and a survery box popped up that I have never seen before and was asking me to rate your video Long Peak…. so I gave it a 5 stars then went to another pop up listing what experience did I get from it… so picked “inspirational” 🍻

What was the route you used to approach the Crow's Nest? I am interested in climbing Maiden Voyage in a few weeks.
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents Месяц назад
Traditionally you do this funky slab up from the west side of the formation then down climb the wild knife edge as we did in the video but, there was a very cool looking bolted route route right under the Crows nest on the south side, Right where we stashed our packs before we groveled over. to the west side through that tunnel. I think the bolted route is 5.11 something and totally a go if your up for maiden voyage. Kind of wish we had top roped it on our way out. . . I would check out all the info on “Mountain Project” it will tell all..

Forgive my naïveté on this, as I don’t have much experience in the bigger stuff, but after abseiling several hundred feet, how do free your rope? Does someone remain up there and deconstruct the anchor? Thanks for a great vid.
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents Месяц назад
The rope is run through chains that are permanently bolted to the rock at the top, the anchor. The center of the rope is marked or the knot connecting 2 ropes is at the anchor. Either way 2 strands of rope are hanging down to the “landing area”.Then once down,you can just pull either end of the single rope or the side of the two ropes with the knot to pull the rope through the anchor chains. Cheers! In an unplanned descent gear must be abandoned to build and anchor. . . Homely just a piece of webbing looped over a rock horn or the like. . .

Is that really on 5.6? It’s hard to tell from just this little video, but it looks a little more than that.
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents Месяц назад
I’d say it feels like a 58 with that optional overhang being in 510a, readings are very subjective and older routes are generally rated easier than they are because the rating system was originally only planned to go up to 510.
@FlyingFerrara
@FlyingFerrara Год назад
Hey, What is the exact protection that is required to complete?
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents Год назад
I didn’t use much, some long slings, draws for the pitons, a number three cam if you do that overhang. Really your best bet is to go to mountainproject.com and check out the comments there.

Why did your partner climb with trail shoes on his harness when you were just gonna rap back to your packs anyway?
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents Год назад
The final rap is not the same place as the start of the climbing. A few 100 rough steep yards and that squirm through the tunnel. With light shoes I think it can be nice to sit on them while belaying when strapped on the back of the harness
@jrblackify
@jrblackify Год назад
@@KarlDeckerPresents Gotcha. Also, no need to do that final squirm to the base; if you cut left just past where the crow's nest rap lands there's an easy gully that also leads to the base. If you enjoy that squeeze then by all means do it, but I usually go left if I'm wearing a pack because it's much easier. Thanks for the video!

Sorry, having climbed in the Boulder area for over 40 years, I have got to say I am not sure how you can safely belay your partner while holding onto a selfie stick. Are you going to toss your camera gear if you have to stop a fall? Just sayin.
@deckersolutions4798
@deckersolutions4798 Год назад
I was on a large ledge tied off to a huge boulder. I could toss the old go pro the on the stick at any moment. I was using a auto assist belay device, not a locker like a grigri, a mammut, an auto locker that does give some before full arrest. Generally that footage was shaky and cut up because my primary focus was on the belay and keeping out slack. . . You can see where I was belaying at 9:25 just west of the main belay station were the climbers are pictured. The other main climbing shot I had Brayden wait to un clip until the shot was done.
