In this video, we’re going to talk about the causes of high liver enzymes. If liver enzymes AST or ALT are high, this signifies a problem with the liver. If ALP is high, you may have a stone blocking the bile duct.
A fatty liver is commonly caused by alcohol. When alcohol is not involved, the number 1 cause of high liver enzymes is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, usually caused by insulin resistance.
Medications like statin drugs, steroids, antibiotics, and Tylenol can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Infections and viruses like hepatitis can cause a fatty liver and elevated liver enzymes as well.
Cirrhosis is scar tissue of the liver, typically resulting from insulin resistance. Cirrhosis can also cause high liver enzymes.
If you have high liver enzymes, keto and intermittent fasting can help.

My ALT and AST were high. I’m only 29 years old so knew I had to do something. Went on the keto diet, and now no longer eat heavy carbs. I hadn’t been taking any medications and no alcohol. Just bad eating. I know my portions now too. I lost 55 pounds and my levels are now normal. It’s great :)

Yup...I had high liver enzymes when I was 33. They couldn't figure out why. My doctor thought I was an alcoholic and after asking me how much I drank, (I maybe had one drink every few months), he said, "Come on, how much do you REALLY drink?" 😡Then he thought it must be hepatitis C because....tattoos 😒 Not once did he ask if I had been taking any medication long term. I had been on effexor for about 10 years because the withdrawals were so awful, I just stayed on it! I ended up having a benign tumor on my liver, which was pushing on my vena cava, and they had no idea how (after reading the MRI) there was any blood flow to my legs. I had NO symptoms. I was left with 61 staples, my muscle strength destroyed and a scar that spans the entire width of my abdomen. The surgeon "diagnosed" me with congenital hepatic fibrosis...which is normally diagnosed in infancy. And yet, somehow I managed to make it into my 30's with no symptoms or issues. 🤥 Two years later, another blood test showed I still had high liver enzymes and I was told I had two more tumors. I didn't want another surgery. About a year after that I did finally get off effexor! When I got pregnant with my last baby, my liver enzymes were totally normal. Hmmm...how is that possible since I'm pretty sure those two tumors are still on my liver, and I apparently have a congenital liver disorder? The only common denominator was the effexor. Not ONE doctor I ever saw said that it might have been the medication. I now no longer trust the medical community.

Sir Setherton thanks for your comment. I just started tests after having high liver enzymes and I was on Lexapro for a long time (an SSRI). I drink maybe a few days of the year, and Lexapro was the only long term medication I was on.

Responding to the recent request for suggested topics: The strong association between reduced inflammation and reduced depression. For the long suffering it seems far fetched, until it has been experienced. The promise and the evidence certainly bears circling back on, the way you circle back on insulin issues. Thanks also by the way, in the same grateful way all your fans send praise.

Dr Berg, my total bili is 1.4. Does that need to be re-checked. My liver enzymes were all normal. The only other item was my HGB was 17.3.

Had extended cholecystectomy done for CA gall bladder done 10 years back . What could be tte cause ? And how can I bring it to normal ?

Hey did you find out what caused it?
@creativeye99

@@malikhumayun1236 high uric acid caused it . Treated with homeopathy and after 3 months it was completely gone and never returned till date

@creativeye99 Thanks for sharing, I have Alp slightly elevated too at 121 but also along other enzymes like ALT at 52, and lastly, GGT at 72. AST, according to the lab is at the highest normal range which is 35 but still not abnormal. Idk what's causing it, may be fatty liver or is it something serious🙃.

So what causes IR? Is it just a bad diet or can it also be a hereditary reason? I found out I had high liver enzymes back in my early 20's when I donated blood and they sent a letter that they couldn't accept it (I am O- universal donor). I was only about 20 lbs. overweight, exercised regularly and only drank on Friday nights. Now, 30 years later, I have stage III liver cirrhosis from NAFL/NASH and I have Type 2 diabetes but I am still at normal weight, I don't drink or smoke and I still exercise regularly. Is God trying to tell me something?

I once had high liver enzymes to which I never knew until I had a blood test done by another doctor. Then, I realized it was due to the different types of medication I was taking due to sever sinusitis. The most dangerous drug I was taking was Prednisone. Keep away, way too many side effects.

How do you know if you have a fatty liver? Don't drink alcohol and it's rather expensive to get lab work done since my insurance doesn't pay for it.

My numbers doubled in two months on Keto yet I’ve lost 32lbs since 1/2/18? 42-82 and 60-109. Last year was 23-38 for the ALT/SLT. Now I’m getting an ultrasound to see my liver. I take many vitamins/supplements and been drinking an herbal BP teas. Anyone had their numbers go up on Keto?

I start keto diet 3.5months ago, i lost around 19kgs, i had Non alcoholic fatty liver, Urid acid 7.55 (7max point). Total cholestrol from 5.58 raised to 8.53 (5.7 max range), AST & ALT from normal range now become AST 194 (40 max point) ALT 50 (35 max point) . Its frustating me. What should i do to bring back my AST ALT function normal ? i ate 300-400gram of vegetable and 4 eggs and 200-300gram beef. One meal a day. Please help. Is this AST & ALT will harm my liver?
