Thanks very much for arranging this intriguing interview! Mr. Wenner was most generous with his time and I also appreciated his brief tour of his extensive operation. I've actually recently placed an order directly to him for one of his Palanca flutes, in grenadilla, which I'm eagerly anticipating.
Thanks for posting. Interesting how the bore diameter changes are top secrete. I see similarities in methods for finding that bore change amongst the transverse flute makers and the Shakuhachi flute makers. I am on the journey myself of making flutes, designing them and developing the theory to design them, combining my skills as an engineer, musician and scientist.
That's a great combination! I've been making a unique type of oblique flute I designed since about 2010 or so that took its final form at the end of 2014. They're a bit like the Kaval. I love this craft! I'm always happy to hear that others are taking steps in similar directions. I went the "organic" route and just blindly drilled holes and shaped blowing edge rims until everything started coming together like it was hearing in my head, haha. Good stuff either way!
