Star Wars Explained made an interesting observation; Mando keeps trying to move in the circles he's always moved in, going back to people he's dealt with before to try and make money and, perhaps, fit in. But he can't. It's obvious he left this group long before, but even so becoming a father has changed him. He always had the Mandalorian code, but now he's become a different person. He has a colorful past, to say the least, but becoming a dad has made it almost impossible to deal with scum like these. It makes me wish he had a better crew to make a family.

Isn’t it weird when you think about the father-baby relationship Mando has with baby Yoda since baby Yoda is definitely older than him at 50 years old? Time really is relative after all.

I agree with you. People whining about filler episodes drive me crazy. It seems to beyond critique these days... it comes off more as a self-entitled demand to structure episodes according to their personal interests. This shows reminds me of shows like Star Trek where there may be an overarching plot going on throughout the season but each episode is it’s own adventure telling a story within itself, which may or may not have anything to do with season-long plot. I’m glad to see new shows like this going back to this kind of style.

And you are absolutely right. None of them were fillers, it's a series with adventure binding it all together nicely. When you look at Johns work, or any of those directing it for that matter, nothing's done in vain. There's a reason behind it all. Everyone expects just full on action with kicks, punches, shooting etc, they hype themselves up.

THANK YOU for explaining why episodes that may seem like filler at first may later turn out not to be. That's a really important thing to keep in mind. Let's hope the last two episodes start paying off the investments of the earlier ones.

I don't know why people keeps saying some episodes are "filler". This first season is going to be very short, with short episodes. They are just introducing the characters and we are getting a taste of how the galaxy is now after the Empire was defeated. There's no time to explain a greater story, we will have more questions than answers, in fact I expect this season to end with some kid of cliffhanger that will be resolved next season. Come on, what did people expect? The origin of baby Yoda to be explained just this season?

Yes I noticed you were a bit late with this one. What a great episode it was. The voice of Anakin finally appearing on screen, Richard Ayoade as Zero, Bill Bur, Natalie Tena!, Clancy Brown! This episode had so many awesome guests and a great betrayal. Did you notice that Burgs horns were almost cut all down in the cell at the end? Those doors really got him! Plus 3 of the Directors as X Wing Pilots! Lovely Always look forward to hearing you both talk about the show.

It's not filler. It's a hark back to the way tv shows used to be made. A lot of the used to be serials. Not every show has to have every episode dedicated to overall season arc/story. I actually liked how they did it here and i hope they keep doing it this way for season 2.

I really loved this episode. It is my second favorite, behind Chapter 3: The Sin (still my favorite). I loved ALL the Easter Eggs and callouts. Some of them a little meta, but it was lots of fun. I don't know why people don't understand about building backstory. I really LOVE how they are taking their time with the overall story, giving us the "day to day" life of The Mandalorian. I'm okay with it. In Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni WE trust. They are excellent storytellers and we just have to be patient and have fun with the stories that they are providing each week. Loved your reactions. This one had the most "laugh out loud" moments and the tension was AMAZING. The music definitely was a character in this episode. Thanks for doing this reaction for us, geeks. I've watched about 12 different people's reactions for this episode (so far). Thanks.

I really appreciate the terminology that you use for this type of episode, calling it a "stand-alone episode" rather than the terminology that many other reactors use, calling them "filler episodes". (At 15 million dollars per episode, that would be expensive filler.) Now, at the end of 2 seasons, it is obvious that they are not just pointless fillers of airtime, rather they introduce characters that come into play as "team builders" down the line. Episode 4 introduced Cara Dune, episode 5 introduced Fennec Shand and (spoiler) Boba Fett, and episode 6 introduced Mayfield. All play critical roles in later episodes. Reactors who call these episodes "filler" simply missed the foreshadowing. Kwiil and the mechanic lady on Tatooine are other examples of side characters, subtly introduced, but with significant purpose to the overall story arc.

When Baby Yoda was about to use the Force on the droid just as Mando blast it was funny as hell. Baby Yoda looks at his hand, thought did I do that? 😆

just re-watching this reaction. Sonny's statement about this being episodic and that would pay off later, really makes sense after seeing the Believer episode of season 2. Glad they brought Mayfeld back for the second season. Plus if you look closely on your background, you got Bill Burr's head hidden behind Kat, so he kind of photobombs you during the episode!

You guys missed the guy who played the New Republic prison guard. It was Matt Lanter who is the voice of Anakin in Clone Wars, I also don't mind the episodic nature of the show. Great comparison to X-Files btw. And I have a feeling Richard Ayoade will direct an episode next season. I love him. He's great. And the thing about voicing droids is that they can reprogram them and bring them back. I need a Taika Watiti and Richard Ayoade collaboration asap! Good reaction and review.

The Mandalorian is based on the Manga series Lone Wolf and Cub. The actions of the Empire are only a subplot of the series. The main plot doesn't even begin until the final episode in season 2. Lone Wolf and Cub is about a father and son wandering in the wilderness while the father is on a path to become King. The indication of Din Djarin becoming a ruler has not been introduced yet. I have no idea what seasons 3 and 4 have in store. But I can guarantee it, by the source material and Star Wars being built on the Hero's Journey as presented by Joseph Campbell.

This just shows how smart and savvy you two, are. Even in these filler episodes you can tell they are for a reason and are being created to introduce enemies and other big picture moments for future episodes of future seasons. I just wish more people were as intelligent as you when it comes to looking at the bigger picture.

I liked this chapter a lot. My second favorite so far. I did get some Batman vibes which I don't mind. Especially the female Twilek was a lot like Harley Quinn. The hallway scene with the lights blinking red to dark with Mando reminded me of Batman. The biggest take away from this episode is furthering story, more so adding back story to make more characters. This episode definitely is more world building that the others. That makes it more interesting for me. The backstabbing aspect and not killing the others will allow for more action in another season. Then you have the New Republic aspect in this now. Another aspect to add into storylines. Thumbs up from me. Clancy Brown as the Devolorian was good, but so much acted and sounded like his charact Kurgan from Highlander.

Can't wait to see what you guys think of this episode! It's my 2nd favorite so far!

This is definitely more in the spirit of a serial, something that would of influenced Lucas. I think this is one of the best case scenarios for a SW related TV show. There is care here and you can tell, the newer films feel empty to me and something that is churned out as product. Visually nice but just hollow. This feels the opposite, there is a lot of different creative minds but they are all working pretty well together. The callbacks aren't cheap and for nostalgia, you get to see new concepts with a good basis for development and older ones even more fleshed out. Think folks don't know what filler really is, The walking dead and other shows have set up aimless plots that are supposed to imply intrigue but generally fall very short. You can have standalone, somewhat self contained stories while breadcrumbing to larger themes and character interaction. It doesn't need to be in a certain order, I have no doubt this is setting up for something larger but the serial format is quite a treat right now.

This episode also had richard ayoade, look him up cause he's a really good comedian....

I completely agree about the "filler" opinion. As I grew up in the states with dragonball. I discovered the original manga in a library before I watched the series. Before toonami debuted, they didn't show hardly no foreign anime at all.

Have you ever played Knights of the Old Republic? When I first saw this, I thought the baby used the destroy droid Force Power.

Well you two seem to have the same mindset as most of the reactors on RU-vid about the lack of plot movement. There are a select few who aren't crazy about all these "filler" episodes and would like for them to get back to the original plot line. I'm definitely one of those who was growing anxious that the story stopped moving. I do know the 2nd season has already been greenlit, so I'm pretty comfortable now knowing the show won't be stupidly and prematurely canceled.

The feet from last episode belong to a character that will appear in half of season 2s episodes. Fennec also returns. Anyone that calls those episodes should get slapped in the face with a fish. Any streaming show has so few episodes tey are written in advance and are written and shot like a film. The reason filler episodes were made in the first place was because production would begun before all the season's episodes were scripted. So a few one off scripts were always written quickly to go into production if the regular episodes ran behind. Those were always poorly written, and made cheaper and faster to make the air date deadline. These shows are completed six months to a year before they get streamed. Season 3 of the Mandalorian finished shooting this Spring and won't be seen until next year. If they can afford to delay that long. They can trim the show to perfection. Making filler episodes for a show that is less than 10 episodes would be financial suicide. People who say that either know nothing about narrative structure or are looking for any reason to dump a nasty outlook on the show as though its rubbish, or they are action-porn addicts who are bored if it isn't balls to the walls explosions, gunfire, and fast chases going on all at once without regard to character development, logic, or story.

Mando needs to hire a babysitter/nanny for Baby Yoda.
