The airflow grill in the center of the dash is fresh air designed to direct fresh air to face level to keep driver alert. BMW has been doing this in their vehicles since at least the early seventies.

Regarding that passenger mirror tilting down when in reverse, that function can be switched on and off by toggling the little switch that sets whether the mirror adjustment is for the driver/passenger mirror. Also there was another quirk you didn't mention which explains why the car has an electric headrest (and electric steering wheel adjustment). That is that in addition to the 3 memories for seat/steering wheel/mirror position, there are two additional automatic memories linked to the two key remotes. When you unlock the car using a key remote it will move the seat/mirror/steering wheel position to whatever it was *when that key was last used*. This means a husband a wife for example who are very different sizes can just use their own key and never need to worry about adjusting the seat, steering wheel, or side mirrors every time they drive. The only thing it can't adjust is the centre mirror. Another quirk is the little rechargeable torch (flashlight) that comes standard in the glovebox. Also the fact that the stereo system is actually located in the boot. The head unit you operate in the dash of an E39 M5 produces no sound at all, it's nothing more than a screen and some buttons/knobs which connect to the DSP stereo (and amp, nav, CD-stacker, TV, phone, and whatever else) in the boot. Finally the wheels and tyres are quirky. It has staggered wheels, meaning the rear wheels are wider than the fronts (fronts take 235mm tyres, rears are 275mm) with directional tyres. This means you can't do a wheel rotation on the car because each wheel/tyre can only go on one corner. Also there is no spare wheel, not even an emergency spare (this was quite uncommon for the time and other E39 5-series BMWs all had spares except the M5). Instead BMW include from the factory a compressor and tyre sealant as a means of getting you home in the event of a puncture. They then redesigned the boot floor and used the space where a spare wheel would be to fit a total of four mufflers for each of the four exhaust tips.

I have the exact same car and what I like is that on a hot day, if you hold the unlock button down on the remote, it not only unlocks the car, but all the windows roll down, including the sunroof.

The cupholders on the e39 are just for cans. Like a 330ml coke can. Fits perfectly. If you put a bottle there... they are useless. But for cans.. perfect. Thank me after trying this out. :) Also. On my e39 my arm rest opens, and it has a decent storage space. I never heard of that problem.

Dude doesn’t know what quirk means. These are called features. A quirk would be the brakelight bulb socket. Or the fact you can’t replace the dsp stereo with aftermarket without extreme modifications.

just fyi, the dsp issue has been solved for awhile now. u just have to connect ur aftermarket head unit to a resler interface and download the app.

You can open or close the windows with the key. Just put it in the front lock and turn to the right, hold until it responds. Also you can de-vent the car of hot air if you set the timer via the clock. Press timer1< set the time you want it to deventalate (15 minutes it will take ex. I get off work at 2pm, I set the timer for 1:45 to fully get the hot air out) and hit set. Red light next to radio should come on. VERY GOOD IF SITTING IN HEAT. those are my few hidden tips upon MANY.

I thought the top temp adjustment is a great subtle item. When it's cold outside and I have the heat on I don't like warm air on my eyes so I can turn it cooler or in summer I can adjust to a slightly warmer temp on the face but have the car temp set low.

It also has a bag that goes from the trunk into the back seats, this was a design to allow you to put skis in the trunk without snow melting on the seats.

in my 528i e39 instead of a the temperature needle below the speed it has an mpg needle which 8 is the lowest number of mpg and 50 the highest.

Love the video! Regarding the doors, that's one of my favorite features of the E39. If you go in any modern BMW other than the 2/4/6 series, the doors are SUPER light. The E39 feels so solid and expensive as a result of this. I recently drove a brand new 7 series, and the doors feel like they came off of a Honda in terms of lightness and solidity :(

There were 2 versions of the middle console, one with the phone where all the cables and electric stuff is underneath the armrest und the other without the phone where you can actually open it up and have some extra space. I would always recommend to switch it to the one without the phone-gap, its also more comfortable :P

The Defrost Button is for Max Defrost and will only work on high. It Bypasses all other heater functions. If you want to defrost the windshield without the fan on high use the top button all the way to the left that has the arrow that points up. That button changes the air flow to the windshield and the fan speed can then be controlled manually with the + - fan buttons.

The fan coming on automatically and a bunch of other stuff like auto defrost when ext temp is low, a/c with "auto", fan speed aggressiveness can easily be changed by codeable options The temp control is incredible especially when it's really hot, really cold, long drives, etc

Regarding the temperature dial on top, it controls whether you take the air from outside or whether it should pass the heating before blowing in air

I've got a quirky feature in mine that you don't have. It's at the bottom of this diatribe list. 3:40 The 2001 pre-facelift M5's had a normal E39 rectangular rear-view mirror. 5:05 I believe the upper roller controls engine-heated air, whereas the climate controls will activate the oil-burning heater. When I was driving in near-freezing conditions, the upper roller did near-nothing until I increased the temperature using the climate controls. 5:58 That button is for rapid windshield defrost. If you need low defrost, you just set the normal climate temperature and fan speed you want and have defrost (top left climate button showing air blowing up from the feet) - you can select any combination of defrost air, upper body air or lower body air from the left side controls. 7.00 I had lemon-soda in the left front cupholder - it held the cup alright, but some lemonade spilt out over the those left side ventilation selector buttons I just mentioned and now the top one is just ever so slightly sticky, but still works like an over-engineered champion button. Yeah, don't drink in your M5 - unless it's extra viscous thickshake. 8:00 I don't think pre-facelift M5's had the rear sunshade by default - some owners may have optioned it. Certainly lower-spec E39's don't have it. 8:35 Are you sure about this? I didn't think electrical-assist for steering had been invented (mainstreamed) yet. 8:45 Don't try the clutch on an E34! 😂 The quirky thing that my M5 has that yours doesn't is ... drum roll ... the wipers go the same way as yours, even though it's a right-hand drive car!! That's actually a pan-E39 thing - didn't happen on the E34, didn't happen on the E60, but for some reason, BMW didn't reverse the wiper orientation for E39 cars with the steering wheel on the other (right) side for this chassis! Having the upper right driver's corner of the windshield never wiped hasn't ever bothered me, though. I think Mercedes single-wiper car owners were fine too, so no reason why I wouldn't be.

The angel eyes headlights and led strip taillights didn’t come on the 2000 M5,only 2001-2003 You also get a different steering wheel in the 2000 model and no wide screen navigation.

You know Brandon , the cupholders are designed for Europe size cans... they are smaller than the beverages in the us. I took everymorning hot coffee, or cold soda never had any issue with it..

The thing about the windshield defrost is common on many German sedans. My Mercedes Benz E280 2007 does the same thing.

Being able to turn on the parking lights on one side of your M5 is not a quirk of the M5. It is actually a requirement of German law and has been around for a long time. I'm pretty sure my '72 2002tii was like that and I know for sure my '80 323i was like that. Other German brands would have that feature as well. One thing I do find annoying about the M5 is the fact that the height of any object you want to put in the trunk is quite restricted because of the audio equipment that hangs down under the parcel shelf, impinging on trunk space. You can put taller items in an e46 M3. A wheeled "walker", such as senior citizens often use, fits easily into the M3's trunk but won't fit into an M5's trunk. The reason I know is that my mom has to use such a "walker" now.

The lower windshield defrost setting is just the up arrow on the left and your desired fan speed! The defrost button is actually max defrost. It’s definitely a stupid and confusing quirk but you don’t have have it on full blast all the time haha.

It should be with a "dead lock"...if you lock the car from outside, someone inside the car wouldn't be able to get out unless you unlock it. ;) try it..scare it...run it :D

Pretty sure the E39 M5 had no sort of electric assist for the steering. The switch likely affects the amount of hydraulic assist using a servo of some sort.

Regarding the ac turning on automatically: that’s because the keys have been programmed to do that. You can get them reset and set accordingly to your preference by the dealer. Enjoy! Karan, 2001 M5 owner :)

All you actually need from a car, specially an older/cheaper one, is a good mechanical car, engine/transmission. Other commodities you can add by yourself, even parking sensors, seat heating, headlights, infotainment display.

@@robertbergstrom8696 No, the rear fog light switch, if equipped, would be an extra turn to the right on your already installed fog light switch. I've already done that retrofit. The blank switch is for cars with manual adjusted headlight control.

How can yhe Ac panel get any simpler? When you push defrost it does exactly what it's told, max fan speed on the windshield to clear the window in a couple of seconds. If you want something else do it manually. Select windsheild and adjust the fan speed. Otherwise just leav it in auto mode, it really works wonders Also the temp wheel for the middel air wents is a brilliant idea especially in the winter. As the settings for winter is usually full heat to the feet and cold to windsheild. Works wonders with everything heated up, but duuring that process you also need warmer air higher up in the cabin or it will fog up (comes from volvo that idea wither separate control for the middle wents)

You may or may not know this- but with your car locked, press and hold down your unlock button on you key fab and remain holding down until- wha la!- the windows and sunroof open all at once . ( at least my 2000 M5 does) Oh, yes , this is a " Feature".

Whining about a car that is nearly 20 years old? Go figure....... HVAC controls are in the manual, it does defrost on a slower setting, the upper vents allow you to have quick residual heat setting rather than changing the climate control etc

You know Brandon , the cupholders are designed for Europe size cans... they are smaller than the beverages in the us. I took everymorning hot coffee, or cold soda never had any issue with it..
