Why should ANYONE every root for some kid to fail? I appreciate seeing so many of these young men and women compete and when someone wins, I celebrate that. I'm a Boling fan . . . among other runners . . . but I'm also a Terrence Laird fan and have been bemoaning his struggles during the past 12-14 months. I just don't understand when peopel root AGAINST someone rather than FOR someone. Sure, if someone is an arrogant jerk, that's one thing. But that's usually not the case.

At that level, anything off the edge translates into slower times. Bad start. Cold. Something personal. That's what makes watching these young athletes so interesting. Boling's a good story. Like with Tiger, he increases the viewership and interest in the sport benefiting all of the top collegiate sprinters. Thanks for making these competitions exciting. These young runners are quite inspiring.

But unlike Tiger, he’s not dominating the sport. Tiger Woods to golf was how Michael Jordan was to basketball in terms of skill. Matt Boling is like Tim Tebow. Getting attention based off non sports related ideals vs true skills

People never see the difference when they compare Matt or Abby to others. When they say increase viewers and growing the sport, you guys are literally saying seeing a white person competive in a sport they never have been. Only difference is for tiger, serena, Simone biles, Simone manual and plenty others. They were never respected for just being able to compete, the recieve their praise by becoming winners at the highest level, they literally had to be the best in the sport. Matt and Abby get praises and excuses even when they lose. Theirs more vids of those to on RU-vid then real track stars like Sydney or Athing Mu, it makes no sense.

@@HEAVYCHEVY409 Not always true. One clear example was Maame Biney, a black short track speed skater. They gave disproportionate coverage to her during the winter Olympics, even though she was never close to being competitive for a medal. In fact, she was only the THIRD best American in her best event, and didn't make it past the second round in her other event. Two white girls performed better, but were never featured. It's because the network thought people would like Maame's storyline better, and they wanted to show someone who didn't look exactly like typical athletes in that particular sport.

As someone who works at a university and knows how hard it is for kids to get and keep scholarships? This is an infuriating thought to me. If that's the case then he needs to pay back his college free-ride scholarship and go pro. Lots of kids would like to get a free college education and athletics has the most scholarships to give out. If he wants to use less important races to train - then go pro and give up the scholarship to someone who wants to get an education and not just a shoe company sponsorship deal.

Honestly, as slow as he looked running (plus yet another bad start), I'm shocked he ran 10.26. He's either fighting an injury or his training took a bad turn and has him messed up. You don't run 20.12 indoors then 20.64 outdoors. It literally doesn't happen. Something is definitely wrong but I'm not sure he can turn it around. This outdoor season has been bad for him end to end so whatever is going on it's doubtful it can be fixed in the next couple weeks.

My only pair of 20 point somethings were on an indoor bank high lane. Weeks later i was back on my 21 and change bull shit. It’s a lot more common than you think. He was running ahead by himself in all those PB marks too last year. I’ve always said that about him. Some runners perform well hunting, eg Spearmon, Boling is superb out front. It’s possible being exposed to more losses may help him mentally in a few months. Don’t forget he got dusted off in the 100m final by runners he’d already beaten that season. Imo that’s why they stuck him in the invite 100m at SAC. I’ve done it once and never again - not fun getting lit up lol there was a 9.8 in Boling’s field. So let’s see but I do kinda think it’ll make him more resilient and IMO have a better overall ncaa 1/2 double. Silver is nice but a double podium is better atleast on points

He ran 10.18 at last years NCAA championship, he ran 10.19 the year before that. Against solid competition he’s usually running about high 10.1 / low 10.2. This is normal for him in the 100m. If he wants to make a world team this year, he basically has no shot unless he chooses to compete in the 400m. The 100m and 200m teams are crazy stacked for the USA men, whereas the 400m landscape is fairly wide open. Pairing that with the fact that there are two 400m relay events, it would be very sensible for worlds for Matthew to run the 400m.

@@seensay2132 Less likely for a few reasons: the first is that long jump is less a competition of ability and more a competition of consistency. Yes, Boling’s PB is good, but it’s more about how reliably he can get himself to jump that level. Just by nature of the variability of long jump, qualifying is less of a sure thing than sprints. The second reason is because there is no relays for the long jump. In the USA, if you manage to make the final in the 400m you will go to worlds at the very least on the mixed relay. In long jump, only the top 3 qualify.

I think if he can mentally take losing more than normal and not allow it to affect him by the end of the season he should top 3 in both events. I don't think he's been jumping this year at all. Do you think he doesn't know how much some people hate him? He goes to Georgia which is an hour away from Atlanta. You see the online hate he gets. Do you really think he doesn't feel it down there? It's probably hard to be him right now. With all the pressure he had coming into college. He's kind of underperformed even though he's a 2x indoor champion, U20 silver medalist and a double finals in the outdoor. He's ready to prove his point. I don't think he fails this year. It looks rough right now but indoors looked bad until he blew tbe field away. I know he feels the heat and the hate because i feel it through this keyboard and it's violent, disgust of the utmost type. He probably thinks about quitting every day. I know it's hard. I was in a similar position playing basketball on a team where I was the best player and it was not a great feeling constantly being looked at like a pos. I hope he just realizes that it's not him but it's the losers who have hate in their heart. It's these people whi have never achieved anything because they have every excuse in the book.

1:53 not exactly. I have a theory as a washed up old doubler. While his outdoor marks were stellar in 2022 and he held top times that would have won or been a close P2 at NCAAs, he wasn’t able to deliver in the rigorous championship multi day prelim/final format doubling. I think they realized his times were glory marks. Until he can do it in a loaded weekend, it doesn’t really matter. Notice his 2022 times he never ran a full program. One relay, never a double when he PBed. That set him up to fail (well, not take gold at ncaas). Contrast that to Fahnbulleh who doubled twice already ahead of SECs. He was perfectly tapered and prepared for the demands of doubling up on the open AND having to do relays. I think they are trying to get Boling prepared for this mostly mentally but physically. This time last year he’d only run in 3 open races by now. But LSU would be his 7th open final of 2023. I’m honestly not sure this is such a good sign but he’s gotta figure this out . SECs are going to be an absolute smoke show on times this year probably the fastest in history I’d wager.

If you look at Will Sumner he ran a 1:50 (which is by no means bad) but for someone of his caliber, who in the indoor season was running 1:48, it was not what he should have gotten. The same can be said of Godwin. He ran 44.7 indoors but ran significantly slower outdoors. Because this is happening to multiple athletes, all from the same school, I can say I'm really not worried. Let me state this: Matthew Boling is a brilliant young athlete. Now for some factual truths that I'm sure not many will agree with. He will not progress as a 100m runner. As he gets a tad older and stronger, he will be an excellent 200/400 runner. In fact, I agree with you TRP. 400m will be his true, top level, international distance. (Not forgetting about his long jumping!) Once he gets out of that College system, he will need to make some big decisions. The first would be to delete the Indoor Season. Perhaps just run a couple only, 200 and 400 races, at championship level. Most International runners never bother with Indoor! I've stated many times that having to constantly peak for two seasons per year (Indoor/Outdoor) ruins many runners. Also, the College system making him race 4 or 5 times a meet, destroys runners, even though Sprinters can handle it better. The poor middle distance runner has to peak 3 times a year. Cross Country, Indoor, Outdoor plus race 3 or 4 times per meet. It destroys them, long before they hit their peaks at late 20's, early 30's. So, MB for 400m at the Olympics. After a CORRECT buildup to peak at the right time. He could be another Michael Johnson, if trained correctly and not simply to get competition points for some College who has no interest in him post College.

I think he is focusing more on the 200m. He looked very slow out of the blocks and his stride was too long in the beginning stages of the race. That is 200m/400m form and you will appear sluggish out of the blocks (which he did) if you use it in the 100m. He could be injured but I think he is training for something else. Stay tuned! It would be smart.

Ngl that 100 didn't look great from Erriyon. Acceleration was not great but okay, speed endurance in that last 20m was not good and he faded back into 3rd. I heard the track was wet so not the best conditions which would explain the 10.1 clocking. Would have loved it if he jumped in the 200 and faced Assinga but I have a feeling Coach Hollway wouldn't want that lol.

Boling's problem is that athletics has changed. To be a challenger even in US trials in the 100m you need to be consistently running under 9.9 sec, in the 200m you need to be consistently running under 19.9 secs (maybe even under 19.8). The 400m is probably his best chance, he will still need to run under 44.5, but whilst that is fast it is not crazy fast
