The Matthew Effect teaches us that those who already have a lot, get even more, while those who have little, end up with less. This theory, coined by Robert K. Merton, extends beyond the financial realm, being observed in education, science, sports, and the internet, and is based on the biblical parable of Matthew 25:29. This idea highlights how the awarded, like Nobel Prize winners, receive more recognition and opportunities, creating a positive cycle. Similarly, in education, children who start with advantages in reading or mathematics tend to improve even more, while those with initial difficulties struggle to catch up. In economics, the Cantillon Effect shows that those who first access new money benefit more, exacerbating economic inequality.
Faced with the Matthew Effect, we have two paths: to resign ourselves or to take action to improve our lives. The key is to change our perspective and adopt an Internal Locus of Control, believing in our capacity to influence our outcomes. Understanding and applying the concept of Growth Mindset and Self-Efficacy can help us overcome inertia and use our skills to progress. The Parable of the Talents reminds us of the importance of making good use of what we have been given, emphasizing that we all have talents that should not be wasted out of fear or laziness. Ultimately, the message is clear: we all have the capacity to make a positive difference, depending on how we choose to use our talents and face our challenges.
