Chess duel between The Mentalist Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Tolman Bunting (Fisher Stevens), an avid chess player and puzzle expert. Thank you for watching!!!
I don't think we heard enough of the game to know where the pieces really were. I think we only heard a few of the moves, with many moves inbetween that we didn't get to hear. So we end up with a game that doesn't make sense to us, but for them, it was a great game.
Agreed. After the move "king side castle" by black, Jane comes and says bishop takes e7. However that's not possible cuz there's a knight in between that square. Now someone posted the original match of professional chess and it shows all the moves
I also love that last move, where the bishop's just standing still, as he already is in c4 (3:23) and forces checkmate without check while actually just blundering the queen
This game is the same as Fischer - Spassky, which was played in Reykjavik in 1972 (Game 6). So, in that case, before the bishop takes e7, we have e3 by white, h6 to kick the bishop, then we have bishop h4, b6 by black, the pawn that is on c4 captures on d5 and after that, the knight captures on d5. Only then, bishop captures on e7.
this would have been a better video if you placed a chess board at all times next to the screen. while they performed their moves, that way we could follow on the board.
That final position looks like the famous match of the century between Fischer and Spassky. In that case, some of the apparently illegal moves make sense by assuming they skipped many moves in the series.
Am I the only one who noticed that the White King and Queen were on the wrong squares before the first move was even played and stayed like that throughout? The King should be on e1 and the Queen on d1, but if you look, they're switched from the beginning.
I bet some scenes showing some of the moves were cut for time. Also, that scene of them in the car, they were texting movies as well. I need to see the whole episode.
too bad they left out some plays. I was disappointed to find that some plays were left out. But since it is a famous game I will just look it up. I love this show. Cho is kick ass.
I don't mean to offend anyone, but those who complain about the game and their moves not making sense don't know what they're talking about, plain and simple. The game cannot be judged by the scenes shown in this video or even in the episode for that matter, because most of the in-between moves weren't shown. You can't recreate the board and follow their moves, because you simply don't know all their moves. Most of the critisism shows that people who commented haven't watched the episode or don't remember it.
Would you not consider the scene where janes texting in the car saying ''he will be resigned before lunch'' and his manner that of some one that's been playing throughout the day and that there are scenes implied where they move their pieces but we don't see?
I love chess in your shows but I'm tired of every smart character just happening to be a super grandmaster on the side, people have no idea how hard it is to play that well
You're right. Far too dramatic if they were actually playing a game. The opening didn't call for all that taunting, it was a line so well-trodden, even I have memorized it to 8 moves.
Why all these objections to the bishop moving to e7? You guys are assuming that they show every move that the players played. Perhaps before Jane engages in bishop on bishop up violence, Bunting had moved his knight to e4 and opened up the lane to e7. They also don't show every time Jane ate, slept, or went to the bathroom but nobody's wondering how he's not starving, quite lovely for being sleep deprived, or acting cavalier for someone whose bowels are about to explode.
I tried to recreate this scene with my pieces, and some of the moves doesn't make sense. And the end part seemed confusing, what happened to the most of the pieces? did they just, disappear? Overall great show, but I was hoping a challenging game. Not this.
Dissapointed about this match. When I watch the episode I see two intelligent men having a battle of wits. When I watch the game, I see two blundering idiots who think they are good at something, but don't know what they're talking about.
Dunam I hate to point out the obvious, usually I find people who do just this very annoying, but somebody has to: IT'S A TV SHOW!!!! They're not actually playing a real game of chess, it just sounds good to the average viewer who doesn't obsess over the game
+FerretJohn It's just annoying because this is a really classic opening that has featured in tournament play. It would have taken only a few minutes to open up a book or a website and copy down an actual game for the show. Several of the moves made on the show are not possible. It ruins the immersion if you actually know anything about chess.
To all the would-be Chess Experts here (like RU-vid doesn't have wannabe experts in everything else) it's just a TV show, relax and enjoy the banter. Who really cares about whether or not the game itself, a minor part of the episode, makes sense?
I think the point is that the errors show that the makers of the show ultimately treat their audience like idiots and don't care about them. No one making a high profile show like this would dream of making obvious mistakes that show the lead character with a brilliant mind being a total idiot, if they think the audience will notice them, because it spoils the audience's immersion and trust in the character and shoe. Imagine showing a character who is meant to be good at golf playing a round and repeatedly striking the ball with the wrong side of the club. Or someone who is a supposedly great cook preparing for a dinner party by not only making a microwave meal (!) but failing to take off the outer packaging (!). It breaks the spell and destroys the audience experience. The fact that the makers of this show have made such obvious errors with chess here can only be explained by two possibilities: either they assume that no one in their audience is capable of understanding the basics of chess (they treat their audience like idiots); or they realize that some might, but they simply don't care about them.
FerretJohn Why not just get it right? I mean, they are gonna have continuity people checking the levels of water in glasses, the length of rolled sleeves, the combing of hairstyle, makeup, position of coffee cup handles, lighting changes, actors positions, etc, etc, etc. The director decided to make a chess game the overarching theme of this episode. Just get it right. If it’s too geeky, have a police chase instead.
@@albertbatfinder5240 actually they usually don't have people checking the length of rolled sleeves or the level of water in water glasses, nor did they feel the need to find a professional chess player to check the game. Why? Because the producers don't cater to the micro-minority of nitpicking haters who obsess over every tiny detail in order to show how much smarter they are. The vast majority of watchers didn't care if the ga,e was accurate, it was fun to watch regardless and their main focus was seeing the heroes catch the bad guy.
@jpechac yep.. that's the exact game.... Jane makes a mistake when he says "Declining the gambit" though. He should have said that only after the next move.
People irl: "Yeah, chess is okay. I don't mind a game here or there when I have the time. Not something I do often though." Commenters: "OMFG! How dare they do this move! And that move on square 53 was just plain wrong! What complete amateurs! How dare they! Here is my 64 page paper proving just how incorrect that one move he made on his 12th turn really was!"
www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1044366 like several people pointed out already, this is the game they were playing, several moves are skipped because they presumably had made moves off camera. the only thing that doesn't make sense is at 3:13 since at no point in the entire game black's pawn goes to f4, but the bishop to c4 right afterwards is accurate. black resigned in the end at the original game and i'm not really that good at chess but if they kept going i think white would have forced mate in 3, which is also accurate to what patrick says.
How did the Bishop take E7? Wasn't the Knight on F6 blocking it? Also the comment about DEEP BLUE...wasn't that the chess computer that FINALLY took down Gary Kasparov?
Very few people possess knowledge of Deep Blue. If I remember correctly that is the computer that finally bested Gary Kasparov who in my humble opinion is basically the best human chess player ever though less famous than Bobby Fischer who is another play some consider the best.
not just rook mate, practically all the pieces. heck I got surprised when the bishop jumped over the knight to capture his bishop, but the knight somehow vanished.
Hello, English isn't my first language but I'll try to comment this: I can't either. I am not a professional chess player, but I know this is the sixth game of the Match of the Century: Fischer vs Spaasky (1972). This game looks like it has no sense, but there aren't all the moves from the original game.
I'm not sure if its in the vid or if the board was edited in but the queen an kings are to face each other not one another...queen alway gets color..white queen is white tile black queen gets black tile...this game board is incorrect...
This game doesnt work. Either you have missed out moves, or they have made up the game. As previous people have already said, when they should be exchanging knight for bishop, there should be a knight and queen on the black's kingside. Most dissappointing, thought this was going to be a real game.
So, basically, the mentalist has no real idea what they're doing with chess. They definitely didn't "miss" moves. Even if they did, it doesn't seem like they're actually keeping track. They seemed more like they were spouting off random positions
Well, I know several people who play the game, but I haven't really bothered trying. 😧 I'm not sure how legit the whole thing looks, but it seems like people aren't too happy about it. How much does it have to do with time contraints, tho?
It could definitely be argued that they only showed a small part of the game, seems really likely. The only problem with the moves we know happened is that it doesn't really make any sense for Jane to say he declined a gambit.
Agreed. Black is ahead in pieces. Jane has no way to move the pawn forward to put the king in check. He also has his Rook in a line with a queen in a good support position. Any offensive is going to be tricky. Not to mention the Bishop move doesn't gain Jane anything. Taking the pawn doesn't cost him anything, and it lets him add a bit of pressure.
To all the pedantic people... Remember that scenes get cut, and even sometimes rearranged, in editing. So, very possibly all your "illegal" moves are simply missing prior moves that make them legal.
As far as the final turns are concerned: Nothing in chess is definitely predicted or set. But since it's a game about logic and progressive action, there is a matter of outcome (win/lose) probability versus consecutive position. It is a classical game, in the deepest meaning of the word. If the round is bound for a close, the opponent does not resist but excepts defeat. Players do not chase each other's Kings, like it happens on mmo or arcade. Certain moves are destined simply because the alternatives do not reverse the outcome. Hence even though "force check in 3 moves" may be an overstatement but it is the right call.
It can't be the case that the pieces were moved off camera. He says bishop C4 at some point, but the bishops covering C4 were both taken out by then already. He's just calling random positions. Sad.
i would guess they meant to make it a queens gambit declined (as jane says "declining the gambit) and messed up the move order or im mistaken cause im a 1450 pleb
