We went to a rich area in Jakarta, lined with luxury houses and huge mansions, each with its own private yacht. We were so blown away...this elite area in Pantai Mutiara reminded us of Miami, Florida.
We also visited a new Chinatown nearby, in Pantjoran PIK for some Chinese Indonesian food.

The 'Chinatown' you visited is basically a restaurants and shops arcade. If you want to see the real deal, go to Glodok Chinatown area in West Jakarta. The site has been around since the mid-17th century. Besides PIK and Glodok, there are other noteworthy areas in Jakarta also known to have considerable Indonesian Chinese population such as Kelapa Gading and Sunter to name a few (both also in the north), but I don't think they qualify as Chinatowns in a cultural sense. Any Jakartans, especially Chinese Indonesians, feel free to correct me if you find this wrong. On Sotong vs Cumi in Indonesia 🤣: Actually we do have 'Sotong' in Indonesia. For us, Cumi (correct form: cumi-cumi, and no, this does indicate a plural form despite word repeating) and Sotong are two different but similar animals. Cumi is more elongated whilst Sotong tends to be short and round-ish. Cumi- Cumi = Squid, Sotong = Cuttlefish.

I think each section of Jakarta, or boroughs, or district, call it whatever you want, has its own affluent neighborhood. However, some would say that actually most affluent neighborhoods in Jakarta are actually located in Central and South sections of the city. In Central Jakarta, find the iconic Menteng, a haute neighborhood since the colonial era, houses in this area are either historic or posh, depending on whether the owner decides to go with the current trend with their money or not. This is also where most top politicians and the 'old rich' live. In the south, some areas worth mentioning are Pondok Indah, Cipete, and Kemang. Kemang (and some parts of Cipete) is well known as a preferred neighborhood for expats. Pondok Indah is where the '90s Rich' live, considered to be Jakarta's Beverly Hills at some point. It's also where Jakarta Intercultural School (formerly Jakarta International School is located), filled with expat kids (and Indo kids with wealthy indo-expat parents lol). And no, for Indos/Jakartans who want to correct me by adding BSD, Bintaro, Cinere, etc. those are not in Jakarta. 😛

Jakarta mah masih mending angka kebutuhan hidupnya rendah gak setinggi negara maju dan masyarakatnya peduli sama orang miskin bahkan ada sampe menyamar jadi orang miskin , diluar orangnya udah apatis gak peduli ma orang lain, Di jepang yg angka kemiskinan 16% dan sudah 30 tahun resesi ada daerah yg saking miskinnya dihapus dari Peta sama pemerintahan sono .

Last one, I promise 🤣 Actually there are apartments in Jakarta with balconies. As far as I know, those that don't have one are like that due to devs (developers) cutting cost to comply with regulations/avoid certain fines. At the same time, they also want to market 'privacy' and 'exclusivity' in the same logic as houses with high walls/fences in affluent neighborhoods. Unlike in other countries, apartments are a thing of luxury in Indonesia, as the term 'Apartemen' is basically synonymous with 'premium apartment', whilst at the same time we have something called 'Rumah Susun' (Rusun) which is also an 'Apartment' but mostly inhabited by the middle-lower income (although some pretty well-off families do live there). On what you ate, the Nasi Campur, it doesn't exactly mean 'Pork Rice'. The term 'nasi campur is originally a generic one: rice with assortment of meat, veggies, etc put together in one plate, hence 'campur' or 'mix' (though not 'mix' in a sense where you toss them together like the Korean bibimbap). However, especially in Jakarta, Nasi Campur has become synonymous with non-halal Chinese rice sets, whereas the 'no pork no lard' and non-chinese rice sets eaten at the more common street diners would be called 'Nasi Rames'. Nasi Campur can also mean different things in different cities. In Bali, the 'Nasi Campur' is a Balinese menu, not Chinese (unless you find it sold at a Chinese restaurant then it would mean the same Nasi Campur you ate in the video). In some areas in Javanese ethnic regions, Nasi Campur is Nasi Rames, not a Chinese dish, and 'no-pork no-lard' is the default setting.
