This is probably the number 1 thing I learned once I started making real money. The harder you work the more screwed you get on taxes. It sucks working 10x harder than everyone else and only making a tiny bit more because the tax man keeps sticking his hand out. Not worrying too much about taxes was the best thing about being poor lol.

I remember one day in your podcast you mentioned that you allocate about $5k a year to pay for your tickets and you just drive how you please. since that day, I've lived life so much better. Can you explain the"legal R34 GT-R's" that I've seen at car shows and how they've not been seized. I really confused by this and any source I find has very vivid information.

My dad and I have been doing this for years. We bought some condos next to University of Montana where we register. Living in Washington state with a 10% sales tax doing this has paid for itself many times over plus we are making income off the rentals and will profit when it comes times to sell.

It’s the Laffer curve in effect. The more unreasonable taxes are perceived to be, the more effort people will put in to avoid paying them, legally or not. Raising taxes more and more will at some point lower overall tax revenue. Rich people in California often claim residence in other states like Texas for example.

I really really hate and think property taxes is stupid and government being greedy. That is like paying property taxes on a 1000 dollar television and paying taxes on it every year you own it.

Do it, it helps out our state a lot, I hear tons of people do it with their fancy big RVs, you can even get PERM registration plates on your car if it's over 11 years old.

I first heard about it through the Jalopnik article last year, maybe the year before that. For kicks I looked in to it for my Miata. The big fee is registering to set up a corporation or whatever - like you said, how the lawyers and their firms bank off of this. It only cost about $1,000, maybe slightly less (as in the whole registration process I believe). But when it only cost about $50 to register your car in your state, it definitely isn't worth it until your car is close to if not worth at least $100k. Coincidentally, when I learned about the Montana thing, I learned some MA people like to try playing the system by registering here in NH (no sales tax). But, unlike Montana, they are much more likely to crack down on that kind of thing. Just about anything retail though, people from other states come in just to save on tax.

As a resident of Delaware they are becoming crook's now the state is tax free shopping but now they charge a document fee to register your car and changes depending on what you pay just had $23 doc fee for $550 car and $48 for $1100 car but they say it's not a tax

Wanted to buy as C63 AMG here in Australia - about $120k, $20k of that was part of the "luxury car tax". It's even worse if you wanted any kinda of supercar.

Here is the thing this has been around for a long long time. It was the people with RVs and ultra high dollar collectors cars who were doing it. The article points out a lot of cars around $250k-$2.5M, which doesn't even cover the 250GTOs, F1s, etc... Those are the people who actually needed it because if you bought such a car auctions the taxes are just nuts. Then people started abusing it and registering entry level exotics there. Trust me the new bill they want is never going to pass. There are a lot of cars with over a 10 Million dollar value that would be nuts to charge 1%. Go to any concourse, Cavallino or whatever and you'll see the big ticket cars with Montana plates that will never let the law pass.

Delaware resident here. Yes, LLC's are simple to setup here. The state does not have any sales tax on any goods or services purchased. We do however have a "documentation fee" charged by the Dept of Transportation of 4.25% one time fee per owner of the registered cars value. Hotels and cars have a small rental tax fee. Residents here pay some of the highest personal income taxes in the country, to make up for lack of sales tax. The First State - Delaware

VIVA MONTANA!!! I've been a Montanan for 25 years. The government understands it's beholden to the people there. Hence they try VERY hard to avoid levying new, or raising old, taxes. I think the issue people have is that it's someone who clearly has plenty of money, because they can afford to buy an exotic car, and they're using that to avoid paying money that everyone else has to. Because they're not paying that money, but they're still getting the benefits that the tax money pays for, it's literally the poor subsidizing the rich.

You can do this instead: WHEN you sell or buy a vehicle form a person there’s a section where you put what type of transaction (this is on the title), simple mark trade. You will be trading a monetary gift. In certain states this will negate the tax. Still know what you are doing, never enter a deal with your eyes closed. Kind of similar with people registering 2 stroke dirt bikes in South Dakota because there are no inspection, however the difference is that you don't need a business or address.

In the 90s, I bought a vehicle from NY. I had taken delivery 2 years before on a lease, and ran the financing to purchase the vehicle thru the original dealership in NY and because I had moved to VA in the interim, the dealership didn't charge me NY state sales tax. No, I got charged sales tax by VA, a few years later when I decided to title and register the vehicle in VA.

Also, I think you can register a mailbox at one of those us postal service places (if they have them in Montana), something like a UPS store that you get your mail sent to. I have a mailbox at a postal center have all my mail sent there and after I got proof of address I put it on my license. And registered my car at that address. I live in New Jersey btw

To register a brand new Turbo S, or Bugatti, or P1 in New Zealand costs $233.86 NZD (170 USD) per year. That includes all taxes and fees. When a car gets to 40 years old, it is deemed to have paid its fair share of road taxes, and so the price goes down rapidly. For example, my 1969 911T costs $55.00 per year for registration, and it is insured for $95,000 NZD and that costs me an additional $240 a year for unlimited mileage cover, including 4 million NZD in third party cover, 24/7 breakdown cover, roadside assistance, and all car relocation costs. My old 928S costs $120 a year to register, and $160 a year to insure.
