The Mormon Ties of Serial Killer Israel Keyes

In February 2012, Israel Keyes would make the mistake that ended his right of terror after he kidnapped and murdered Samantha Koenig from Anchorage, Alaska.
We've long been baffled by what makes up a serial killer, and so the question of Israel Keyes being born to Mormon Extremists helps us to understand how his parents came to raise him in such an extremist environment, rich with cults, violence, and crime. And it just might all trace back to the teaching of early Mormon leaders like Brigham Young.
If you are a victim of assault on the property or at an activity associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, find out if your story can help create the pressure needed to for policy changes to protect future attendees. If your case is taken, Mormon True Crime may receive financial support. ldsabuse.justiceinnumbers.com/

love the pod, wanna recommend a case! jeffery lundgren and the kirtland cult: my dads side of the family grew up RLDS which is what most if not all of the kirtland cult was. they formed for a similar reason the keys family joined cults which was women being allowed in the priesthood in the 80s. i bring this one up specifically because my uncle actually wanted to follow the cult to kirtland (where it went from cultish bible study group in MO to a doomsday death cult) but his ex wife wouldn't let him, thank god. it's a very mormon story from start to finish so i'm sure you'd find it interesting!

Never Mormon here but lived adjacent to many, I’ve been fascinated with the beliefs since family moved to Utah back in the day. A whole different universe with planets and patriarchy and hidden and ever changing doctrine

My favorite is when someone tells me something was “never doctrine,” or I just don’t understand how doctrine is set in the church. Then they say the doctrine never changes. They don’t even realize the doctrine of the godhead used today wasn’t solidified until the early 1900s!

@@yorgasor Yes, the ever changing goal post is so damaging. Abusers do that, gaslight the victim that they are crazy and don’t remember correctly, so the victim is never on solid ground. Drives people into a neurotic state.✌️♥️

22:57 comment. Yes! Joseph Smith was ardently anti-allopathy because of the death of his brother Alvin from calomel (mercury). He promoted Thomsonian (Vitalist) medicine among his followers. For example, Dr. Levi Richards, Joseph’s personal physician, (brother of Willard), was a Thomsonian. It was Brigham Young who steered the church into allopathy, beginning primarily in the areas of surgery and midwifery. Although the hubris in his writings can be a bit irritating at times, the two books on this topic by John Heinerman are illuminating. “Joseph Smith and Herbal Medicine” and “Joseph Smith and Natural Foods” are the titles. In today’s world of medicine, the intellectual heirs of Joseph’s beliefs include Dr John R Christopher (The School of Natural Healing) and Dr Christopher’s main protégée, a Nevermo named Dr Richard Schulze. (Can’t tell that I spent a lot of time studying this as a former TBM LDS can you? 😂)
@Oilstories
@Oilstories Месяц назад
Oh, and the man that did the surgery on teen Joseph Smith Jr’s leg? That was his own uncle, John Smith, who taught at Dartmouth. According to the book by Kathleen Kimball Melonakos, Hyrum Smith was able to attend Dartmouth -a college established to educate Native Americans-because of this uncle working behind the scenes to allow it. The tea gets even juicer here: it was allowed because Hyrum, Joseph Sr and Joseph Jr supplied Uncle John’s medical school with cadavers. How? By clandestine grave-digging. So when the supposed unlearned, unlettered Joseph was recuperating from his surgery, constantly attended by Hyrum, now you know some of the substance of what Joseph was taught.

@@Oilstoriesyou are very well spoken! I wish we could shout the truth from the rooftops. But even if we did; facts vs the emotional gaslit really can’t hear the facts because they are so unable to critically think or ponder. They are taught how to spin and repeat responses that are only meant to keep them in the cult. Thank you for your understanding of facts!

Finally got around to listening to a full episode of this show! I havent been a big follower of true crime but damn this is fascinating... I would love to hear more talk about why he might have done what he did, it seemed kinda like the ted bundy stuff came out of nowhere, but i guess this was more focused on the influences of mormonism. Guess i have some documentaries to watch 😅
@MormonTrueCrime
@MormonTrueCrime 16 дней назад
Yes my focus is definitely on the role of Mormonism, because if I did both I'd have Stephanie Harlowe length episodes of 3-5 hours to really talk about all the pieces I'd love to cover. If it turns out people would prefer that format I'd be so happy to do that instead. I always am frustrated with how much I feel I have to skip over. It's not a documentary, but American Predator by Maureen Callahan on Audible was so comprehensive and enlightening on the case itself. Highly recommend.

I am a former member of the LDS church and was 12 years old when the church announced the lifting of the ban on black members. You might want to check your Joseph Smith quote. He was killed on 27 Jun 1844. Your quote is attributed to 1845.

The eleven paintings with the "we are one" quote seems to be some kind of 'spiritual' declaration. Maybe it's a stretch to say that is related to his kookie upbringing. Or maybe it's simply "we are all dead". Anyway, love your channel!!

Right. I remember, I was very young, 6-7, when Dr King was murdered. I looked at my folks and asked, why would anyone want to hurt Dr. King? I still feel that in my bone marrow. These prophets are blasphemers, IMO, and could not see what a true Christian even is. So sad.

One very minor correction, Korihor was one of the antichrists from the Book of Mormon. Kishkumen was the guy who started the Gadianton Robbers which caused the downfall of the government. We all know all it takes is a single incorrect statement to completely discredit everything else you said 😅

Mormons believe they ARE Christian. It’s Christians who insist Mormons are not part of their club. Which is a really stupid move (and I can say so because I was born into Mormonism, 4th generation.) Why is this snobbishness toward a church with Jesus Christ in its official name so stupid? Because it further cements the Mormon persecution complex. It helps solidify the “us true church” vs “the rest of Christianity, cruel bastards” dichotomy. The best thing other Christians can do in regard to the Mormon “problem” or any other perceived “problem” is to live their own goddamn religion and mind their own business.

1 Comment: There were 10 kids and only Israel "became" a serial killer. I feel that he was already one inside. The other kids would have been subjected to the same nonsense as he, but were of a different neurodiversity from him. What becomes of any of us is only partly environment. A big chunk is what stuffs this environment acts upon. My opinion, pues claro, based on my own observations of similar families.

While he is the only serial killer, his siblings are all in militant white supremacist cults so they're only one sidestep better.

And within families, different kids can be treated very differently-and younger ones can be abused by older ones.
