I did Maine to California (round trip ) in a 1999 Mazda Protege (1.6L 4 cyl engine : about 105 hp!!! ) : NO issue whatsoever...and then, Orlando (fl) to Santa Barbara ( CA) twice ( in that same Mazda)

When CVT's are in question, *just say NO!* lol. Corolla is rated at 132hp and loses *42 HP* through drivetrain loss??! I know ALL vehicles have some drivetrain loss, Thats like a 30% difference though! 350hp dynoing 300 is expected (14-15% loss). 132hp coming in at 90 is sad.

I think I'd choose a mkiv 1.9 tdi for the under 100hp challenge. A good one of those should be able to maintain triple digit speeds.

NO, Ed. That corolla does 130hp COMBINED, so ICE + E-motor together. And that car does NOT have a CVT but an E-CVT which works using planetary gearsets. It's BOMBproof reliable driveline. It does 115mph (don't ask how i know) BTW a hybrid is not ideal for fast highway driving. Anything faster then 70mph and mileage will drop off strong. That Insight with Diesel swap has great potential
