What should have been a momentous day for Bremont, the launch of both a watch with an actual piece of the Wright brothers’ Wright Flyer and the brand’s first in-house movement, turned sour after it was revealed that the calibre BWC/01 was not, after all, in-house. This is the story of how the Wright Flyer became the most controversial watch ever, and what that means not just for Bremont, but for the industry as well.

The Bremont detractors on here are hilarious. There is no “faux history” from them. They actually market themselves on their recent history and their engineering. Those who don’t know about the brand really shouldn’t comment. A price comparison is Tudor for the majority of Bremont’s range. This Flyer is a limited edition exclusive that doesn’t represent any of the majority of their sales. Tudor for instance will make and sell probably 10 times the number that Bremont make (around 8000 a year), will be using relatively rudimentary technology and piggybacking off the Rolex knowhow, will also, until very recently, he using ETA or Valjioix modified movements, and are worked and sold off the back of celebrity endorsements and the like that, in my opinion, cheapen them somewhat. I like Tudor, don’t get me wrong. But they are on a price parity with Bremont and economy of scale would say that Bremont themselves are actually good value, especially when you learn properly about the numbers, the technology that is in them (the Triptych case, the shock resistance, the extra hardened steel and sapphires, the over doing of the anti reflective coating and so on), they are very good value. On top of that, they have a modern but also traditional look rolled into a very distinctive look. Yet people still are hugely derogatory about them yet they, other than this faux pas, have done nothing different to any other manufacturer, with Tudor being a very good comparison. So, yes, I am a fan. Yes own one. And no I wasn’t suckered in by their present history and so on. I liked what I saw, did the research and it was a Bremont vs an Omega AT. It was a close call, I have to admit, but I liked putting my money into a home brand and Bremont won. Haven’t regretted it once. I adore it. Always will. And couldn’t give a monkeys about resale value. The value is it’s meaning to me, what it represents to me (a tribute to both my late father and late father in law) and the knowledge that I have something on my wrist that is easily an equal to anything similarly priced out there in terms of engineering at least. Carry on criticising.....it does show people to be opinionated, not knowledgeable. It’s very funny
@chilledlikeasunday
@chilledlikeasunday 5 лет назад
Glad someone said it. I've owned a Bremont U-2 for 6 years and absolutely love it. Also bought a much more expensive Omega after that with an 'in-house' movement, however I keep going back to my U-2. It's just got a character to it that the Omega doesn't have that probably comes from being a smaller production watchmaker. I think if half these people got off their internet high horses and spent some time with these watches they seem to know so well they would realise that
@johnnyboy114
@johnnyboy114 5 лет назад
Shane Oung yep. Usual tribalism over something that is really not worth getting tribal over. Everyone has their own tastes and everyone has their own interests and this is purely a hobby. Why criticise another persons choices? Seems so strange, especially when that criticism is both unfounded and totally lacking in knowledge. I find it both funny and sad. The U-2 is a cracking watch by the way. I do like the Omega you have though and it was a close call in choice for me but the Bremont was just that something different and it felt so much more substantial than the Omega too. But hey, I know nothing.....😜

I might have missed the point, but... on what basis DID Bremont make the "in-house" claim? In-house isn't a water tight test of quality, certainly, but for desirability, it shows a watch maker's commitment to the art and craft. There's a gentleman in my town that makes wooden pendulum clocks (hand-carved wooden gears, handmade granite weights, etc) and charges over 5,000 for each piece. The gears, on moderately close inspection, are very clearly hand carved with very inconsistent tooth profile and depth and I'm sure it's not exactly "chronometer" spec, but what it IS is a beautiful piece of art in it's own right. 5 grand is a bit much in my opinion, but I would love to buy one of his clocks because he made it all himself and I get to inspect and see the evidence of his hard work and passion in each little inaccuracy and flaw. :)

The ébauche has been a feature of haute horlogerie for decades. The holy trinity of watches, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin, have all used the same Jaeger-LeCoultre movements. Indeed, arguably the finest movement ever made, the V.C. The base LaJoux Perret is also not fully original. It's based on a Valjoux and the chronograph removed. LJP puts their own bidirectional winding setup in the leftover space. The De-chronographed Valjoux is quite a popular base for other "in-house" movements. Habring2, Demasko, are two notables. @@Dylan-xj8tb Bremont has created some pretty special limited editions in the past, including the Codebreaker (containing material from Bletchley Park) and the HMS Victory (with oak and copper from the eponymous warship). The likelyhood that this watch contains a piece of fabric from the original Wright Flyer is relatively high.
@TheOfficialCzex
@TheOfficialCzex 5 лет назад
@@Dylan-xj8tb I might also add that the Wright Flyer was badly damaged after only four flights and was eventually further damaged while being stored in the Wright's Ohio basement. But before restoring it for museum display, Orville saved some of the original muslin cloth from the wings, which his brother Wilbur had stitched together by hand. It's this original cloth that sits inside each Bremont Wright Flyer. The fabric was obtained directly from the Wright family and proceeds from the sale of the Bremont Wright Flyer will benefit restoration of the historic family home in Dayton, Ohio.

Bremont shite the bed a long time ago I don’t understand why we continue to talk about this brand as anything other than a fashion brand of Hollywood action films. The British renaissance of watchmaking is not coming through Bremont. In fact, Sinn and oris offer a better watch at a better price.

I really want to like Bremont, but it’s a struggle. What they’ve achieved in a relatively short time is very impressive. And it would be great to see a British watchmaker making a serious mark on the horological world stage. But somehow there seems to be something a bit too smooth, too glib, about the way they market themselves and their pieces. The brand seems a bit contrived, as do some of their watches, and the ‘in house’ movement debacle was obviously a blow to their credibility. Anyway, cracking video, as usual.
@broyout3586
@broyout3586 Год назад
Agreed, I got the exact same impression (after reviewing their uberslick website). It's all a bit too perfect and too made up. What they lack in heritage, they make up for in marketing bs. However, I can appreciate a well thought out concept, and this is very well thought out. I really like their designs and execution as well. It's almost a parody of high end Swiss watch making, but the prices are a bit too meaty for it to be a joke. For now I'll keep to my seagulls and seikos, an asian parody of sorts themselves :)

@bidipbo
@bidipbo 5 лет назад
The fragment inside the watch is also a rip-off of concept. In the case of Romain Jerome, it understood that since the brand was so new as to lack any patrimony, or heritage (a ridiculous point of pride in the horlogerie game) it would put 'history' inside its timepieces instead. I would be very curious about the origins of the textile, since RJ encountered controversy when attempting to explain the provenance of the moon rock contained in its limited edition collection - that it hadn't been stolen, or wasn't the genuine substance. The chain of custody would be interesting to verify, right down to each number in the collection. The idea is gimmicky to be sure - but even more so when the brand is Bremont and not RJ. Bremont is representative of everything wrong in the world of luxury timepieces - a gutsy enterprise producing gutless iterations, one after another.

Two things irk me about Bremont, firstly although the watches are undoubtably of a good quality, there is far too much emphasis placed on selling them ‘as a piece of British history’...putting a bit of Concord/Spitfire/Wright into the watch infers the watch is both historical and British which which clearly isn’t true, further to that the factory in its new incarnation is placed in one of the most expensive areas in England, if it were to be re-located up North and the prices dropped accordingly then they would be more competitive against stiffJapanese/Swiss competition.
