The frog thing is a sort of urban legend, of course, but an actual psychological thing. I think that a lot of how cults get you is that you don't want to face the fact that you were wrong about someone. He started as nice, and you can't admit that you misjudged him. Then, he does something horrible, but you excuse it. But he does something else horrible, and you don't want to admit that you were wrong that time, so you excuse it again...
@Fox5iv3
@Fox5iv3 Год назад
I think you're onto something here. Cults can technically take in and warp anyone as long as the person they're targeting is in an emotional space that opens them up to their manipulation and trickery. It's why in trying to inoculate someone from cult thinking, it can be very important not to tell them that they were unintelligent or lacking when they decided to trust a cult or a cult leader - because that is the very thing that they don't want to look at or admit.

@@Fox5iv3 This is why I think we should focus on the fact that people (like cult leaders, authoritarians, etc) who prey on people's fear, complexes, fallacies etc. aren't *strong*- those abusive individuals are *weak*, essentially cheating by exploiting our more root mental functions to get away with things. The average person tries to meet them on the level of logic and common decency, while the users and abusers go for the low blow hitting us where we can't rely on those things.

The "frog in the water" thing isn't actually true- a frog will jump out of the water when it gets too hot. The original experiment was conducted using frogs that were lobotomized, which is why they didn't behave normally. It's a useful analogy though, which is why we use it even if it's not actually true.

Yet in case of humans, when pushed slightly by authority, religious, parental, mentor and love interest figures, they will stay in the water as it begins to boil. One might even say humans nowadays are mentally lobotomized via propaganda, pop culture, peer pressure, social and work groups and the general need to avoid ostracism.

I read Gabrielle Lavallée's biography, titled "L'Alliance de la Brebis", and I have to say it's the single most upsetting, horrifying, gut-wrenching thing I've ever come across. To this very day, I'm still traumatized by some of the things I've read in that book. The memory of those events still haunt and sicken me to a degree I can't quite describe, and I remain baffled by the fact that Gabrielle somehow survived what has been done to her. Something that isn't mentioned in this video is that she was left on the cold wooden floor of the very same room she was amputated in as the other members later went to bed, and she spent the whole night there, crying and bleeding, with her severed arm lying a mere few feet away from her. She described it as being almost an out-of-body experience for how surreal it was, to just see her own limb on its own like that and discarded in a dirty corner like some piece of junk. Before that, other tortures included her being lifted up by the ankles and dropped on her head repeatedly until she passed out, left outside naked in the harsh winter cold for nearly an hour, beaten up by all the members at once, thrown from a balcony and dragged back up only to be thrown again, and sexually assaulted by Roch countless times. ...I'm just gonna say it: the fact that she lived to tell the tale is a miracle.

When I was a senior in high school they took us on a field trip... to the state penitentiary. We visited with 3 of the inmates there. The first one warned us about the dangers of using. He blamed marijuana for his crimes and would not accept responsibility for his actions. He was there for cutting his girlfriend's head off and driving through 3 states with it in the passenger seat. The second inmate warned us that the actions of others could also affect you, even if you don't know anything about it. He was there because his friend decided to rob a gas station and kill the clerk without even telling him what he had done while he sat outside in the car. The third inmate warned us that we should never do anything to end up in prison because no matter how big or strong you are, there's way too many people there who aren't your friends, and if they want to do something to you there's nothing you can do to stop it. He was there because he had sexually abused a child and he had been raped by other men many, many times after he got there.

He got 5 years… meanwhile someone was accused of sexually assaulting his ex and got mandatory sentencing of 25 years. Feel like one of these crimes is way worse than the other. And the sex assault guy turned out to be innocent and released 10 years in when new evidence came to light that his ex had in fact made up the crime after they split. That’s America for ya

One of the survivors of the Jonestown massacre made the salient point that nobody joins a "cult": People join churches, or people join a political group or a social movement. They believe in something beyond themselves, a larger goal, and it makes sense that it would take more than one person to accomplish such goals. The goal will then shift over time, as a group becomes more insular. It can end up being a world away from the group or the cause which initially drew in members, but, by then, it may be too late to leave.

She was doing talks about her life with the cult to sensitize us about the dangers of cults and how effective cult leaders can be. The fact that this woman still lives on and has the strength to be open about those atrocities is commendable. I will never forget how after the talk, I came to her and talked about how I could relate to her early life (she had a very tough childhood, and at the time she was recruited, she had done many things that left her mentally vulnerable, which is the type of people cult leaders love to prey on the most), and how her story opened my eyes to how easily I could have be dragged into something similar at the time. She gave me a long hug, and thanked me... She's an incredibly kind lady, and I hope she's still doing well. This cult was in the forest by my cottage in the 80’s and I would always hear stories from my mom and aunt about a woman running out of the forest with one arm and barely any teeth. We would call it the Burnt River cult until one day I actually did research. This guy was sooo fucked up that I don’t have any words. The frog in the boiling water is an analogy, it’s not professed as how to cook a frog it’s professed as how people can get used to things (no matter good or bad) if your surroundings change slowly.
@liger04
@liger04 2 года назад
Late response, but I only just discovered this channel. There was a real experiment done with putting a live frog in boiling water, except there's one part that's frequently ignored: most of the frog's brain was removed beforehand. This became popularized as proof that the brain somehow houses a part of the soul, then it was "rewritten" (lied about) to not mention the brain removal part as proof that animals don't have a sense of logic (even though they do, it just happens to be in that thing that was removed in the experiment) and if you somehow bypass an animal's reflexes then they're basically inanimate. Now it has basically been "rewritten" many times by people trying to prove increasingly insane points until it somehow got attached to the originally unrelated idea of cognitive dissonance. Which, while it's nice that it teaches people about a real thing for once, sucks when people try to disprove cognitive dissonance by attacking this originally unrelated and bad experiment.
@shadefangkweep

I could be wrong here, but IIRC it was an experiment done in the 1800s that also involved removing the frog's brain first.

I'm currently reading Gabrielle Lavallee's (the cult member who had her arm amputated by Roch) book and although I am very used to gruesome true crime stories, this is a really hard one to get through. Roch makes Manson look like a choir boy. Edit: She's the mother of the 2 month old baby who died but it's doubtful she did it on purpose. Edit 2: the guy who was castrated was actually operated on . Edit 3: Gabrielle 's arm was amputated by a curved carpet knife, not a chainsaw. This is all from Gabrielle Lavallee's book and she actually came to speak at my high school. I guess a lot is lost in translation.
@victoriateague9012
@victoriateague9012 3 года назад
So why did she leave her child outside?? It's still torture no matter what was used carpet knife or chainsaw, operated on or castrated. I'm also pretty sure that the two year old child didn't give a shit either I don't think a lot was lost in translation.

Man... leave Charlie alone... There's literally nothing but hearsay that says he did anything at all other than cut that one dudes ear with a sword. I get it, he's an easy target, but he still didn't really do anything that anybody can actually prove, and he was given an illegal trial without retrial, so legally if you want to be technical, Charlie Manson committed no crimes of which he was detained for, cuz he was never given the ability to speak for himself during his trial. They already had the guilty plea ready when they started cuffing people up off the street. Charlie was convicted and sentenced by the court of public opinion. And public opinion was guided by the media because they needed a scape goat Boogeyman to cash in on. Picture the whole thing without charlie, it wouldn't be very controversial and money-making if some hippies coming down off acid were the murderers. After maybe about a year, it would be old news. But a hippie "cult leader" with "magical powers" or "followers who are under mind control". Smh.. Charlie had what we now cal a "trap house". Living on the street is hard. Being a throw away is hard, there's a high chance that yall wouldn't understand what that's like. Charlie Manson might've been a lot of things, but the things he was didn't warrant a life sentence.
