Growing up in Calgary was good. I like where I live now though in the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. It’s a ferry ride over to the big city (Vancouver) but there’s plenty here too. (400k population roughly in greater Victoria) Calgary still really benefits from affordability where as Victoria, Vancouver and Toronto are the three most expensive cities to live in Canada.
@@darp1286 Sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore Montreal I just haven’t lived there. My girlfriend did her masters at McGill and spoke highly of it. I know Montreal has become more expensive over time but my understanding was it still wasn’t “that” bad in terms of cost. Especially compared to Toronto.
I love it - it's so chaotic and so different from the country I'm from (Australia), but then again I don't live in India so it's not as much of a nuisance hearing them all the time.
Apart from equal number 10 on the list (Melbourne) all other cities are in the Northern Hemisphere and have cold climates & snow. I'm from Melbourne. At the moment it's winter but I'm sitting out on my balcony. We've never been cold enough for snow here, for this I'm grateful.
Toronto is only liveable if you have have generational wealth to rely on or if you bought property 5+ years ago. If you're among those poor sods unlucky enough to be born after 1985 or so then Toronto is just plain awful to live in, if you can even call the meaningless existence you'll experience "living." I mean, I guess if having a whole generation of 20 and 30-something-year-olds living paycheck to paycheck with roommates is your idea of "living," then all power to you. In my experience, however, the income to cost of living ratio is so off it'll make your head spin. I lived in Toronto for my entire life, including 10 years building my career after finishing up my degree. I finally left that hamster wheel of a city, and Canada outright, in April. I couldn't be happier living in Europe now. Canada betrayed its young people big time and I would never willingly move back.
@@BlipNoir can you make a decent living there? Im dutch and its practically impossible to own a house here for young people without massive help from parents.
@@julian5345 I would say the same problem exists in pretty much every advanced economy, based on what I've heard from locals here. Personally, I have a better life here because I lived abroad, brought my skillset here and am also ethnically Polish while also knowing the language. As someone fluent in English, you'd do well in Poland, especially if you brought a remote job from the Netherlands with you as the Euro goes very far locally in terms of purchasing power. However, it's a question of "What are you willing to abandon just to own a home?" Outside of a few major cities, Poland would be a brand new culture to most people, so one's happiness really depends on their circumstances.
I disagree. I was born & raised in Toronto during the 90s, my parents are refugees and came into this country with nothing. Services from the Public Library, and Toronto Community Housing helped me succeed in school, while Employment Ontario & OSAP gave me the opportunity to work and go to university. The quality of life that I had growing up poor was far better than what my family members had to endure in Australia, the U.S and the U.K. You are absolutely right though, young Canadians are getting robbed because of our speculative housing market. Absolutely ridiculous. It's the main reason why I'm living with my parents (saving money for a down payment). It's so sad to see the soul of a city that I love being sucked dry because of gentrification. I'm sorta optimistic now that interest rates are rising and the political will to rezone our neighborhoods, but right now is quite painful. Glad you're doing well in Poland, and that you're happy. I wish you the best :), cheers!
Hmmm, 3 Canadian cities, 2 Swiss cities, Amsterdam and Copenhagen? It seems like availability of cannabis is very important to whoever's making this list.
@@onedirectionniall8381 if you think Berlin is boring, Vienna is probably 10x more. And the people are just as grumpy if not more unfortunately. Tbh I wish people who made these rankings considered these factors.
I live in Brisbane, Australia and I personally feel that it is one of the most liveable cities and very peaceful with a low population but still has all the big city amenities. Probably what Sydney/Melbourne used to be 20 years or so ago. Its all about the branding on a global scale - that Sydney and Melbourne are the best cities in Australia so they're growing rapidly at 100k+ people added per year and that is contributing to rising house prices. Brisbane is relatively more affordable on that front and does have exciting places such as the Goldcoast and the Sunshine Coast on its doorstep. Not to mention the fantastic all-year round sunny weather. It is only lacking in public transport and infrastructure and a bit of entertainment/culture but that is soon to change in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics with Queens Wharf, Brisbane Metro, Waterfront Brisbane and Cross River Rail.
Conversely, the GC simply can’t keep up with the overflow of growth it’s had since COVID. At least Brisbane has some semblance of working public transport
How can I check the full list? When I search on Wikipedia or other sites it just shows the Top 10 most livable cities and Top 10 worst livable cities. I want to see the full list.
no wonder Damascus is the least liveable. the average salary is about 25$ yet an apartment in most parts of organised Damascus can cost up to half a million dollars 🙂
Not surprised by the Top 10 at all. Impressive that 5 million+ cities like Melbourne, Osaka, and Toronto manage to remain on the list. Osaka isn't growing much but the other 2 add tons of people each year. It will be interesting to see if they can stay in the Top 10.
It was last year's list that was drastically affected by COVID, not this list. This 2022 list is more in line with what their Top 10 usually looks like because cities around the world have now opened back up again.
I'm from BC and I had no idea how lucky we are until I started traveling the world. The housing market being a major blow to quality of live in Vancouver, but everything else is amazing
Ranking ridiculously expensive cities as "liveable" doesn't seem right to me. No matter what else they have to offer, if the average wage is not commensurate with the cost of living, then they are quite literally unliveable.
Don’t confuse “Liveable City” with “Cool City” This list is so subjective. Living in Frankfurt may be comfortable, but it’s just comfortably lame. A nightmare if you ask me. A city is enjoyed based off the energy it give out. Hence places like Mexico City, Bangkok, Nairobi, New York, Montreal, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Medellin, Chicago, Mumbai and Shanghai are awesome! And none of them are perfect. They are thriving and vibrant, much more than Vienna, Zurich and Copenhagen.
Great points! I'd take Mexico City over most on that list. Very affordable, great food and people. Good, affordable medical facilities. Nice climate, etc. Altitude and pollution can be a problem for some however.
I genuinely don't get how Toronto keeps appearing on these lists. I lived there for a year and couldn't get out quickly enough. It's unbelievably expensive for a city with no soul. The suburban sprawl is horrible, the public transit is just as bad, there's very little decent bike infrastructure and drivers are extremely hostile toward cyclists. This coming from someone who lived and worked in a Chinese megacity as well. Sure, getting around in a Chinese city can be chaotic, but at least nobody's angrily trying to run you off the road for just trying to get somewhere. Everyone's stressed and angry all the time, and I get it, knowing that my coworkers who spent an hour or more in traffic each way on their daily commute weren't in the minority. I never thought I'd be so lonely in the biggest city in Canada, but the people were largely cold and anti-social, which is the opposite of what I've found in other big North American cities like Montreal (where I currently live), Chicago and NYC. I don't know what metrics are used to determine that Toronto is liveable, but in my experience, it's a miserable place to be a human being.
The only cold city in this list is Calgary. All the others have a very warm climate, even Toronto. And in summer, Calgary has very hot summers with temperatures above 40 degrees celcius quite often
I can’t see any of these beating Sydney in Australia and maybe that is cause I don’t have any kids? Sydney got all that most people like I think, a safe place that got all you need plus nice weather and close to a lot of nice beaches and beautiful locations
True that! Odd no Spanish cities are on that list. A city like Valenicia is much nicer then most of the ones on that list imho. Same with Madrid, Seville, Bilbao, etc.
These rankings are pretty wack to be honest.. Like i can understand Auckland dropping from top place, which was just a speculative ranking in the first place, & out of the top 10. But a knee jerk down to 34 because it had 3 separated snap lockdowns? But Melbourne, (& i love Melbourne i used to live there) kept 10th place despite having the worlds longest continuous lockdown & multiple major protests?. While Brisbane dropped out of the top 10, despite being barely locked down at all, relative to Melbourne & Sydney. And then Perth dropped too, despite it not even having any lock downs at all? While WA was cut off from the rest of Australia for a long time, through that entire time they had nightclubs open & no restrictions, plus a pumping mining office sector. It was life as normal, just with restrictions to enter. While the rest of Australia had various lockdowns. I would have expected Melbourne to drop out of the top 10, potentially even to the 20s, & Perth be the highest ranked Australian city, potentially no 10, & Brisbane be in the top 20 easily..
I think the one city that shouldn't be on this list is Calgary. It's definitely highly developed and great to live, but the long and brutal winters would make living there hard in the long-term. Vancouver is expensive, but the winters (while wet) are quite mild in comparison.
LOL Calgary winters are no where near "brutal" It's quite mild and always sunny. Vancouver rains all the time and has the worst homeless problem in Canada. High prices, high crime and incredibly ignorant people.
I've lived in both cities calgary and Vancouver and both cities have their beauty's. Vancouver is just so god damn expensive. The gas, hydro, insurance rates, property taxes etc we are talking about everythingggg. Calgary ya sure if can have Cold spells but they don't last wrong and we get warm Chinook winds that can melt all the snow in a few days during the middle of winter. Calgary for the win
where are u from and why single out uk? these are collection of boring liveable cities and london is much more entertaining, it aint liveable, becoz crime, expensive housing, traffic etc etc
Multiculturalism is not a pro for the livability of city. In majority of the cases, its the very opposite of that. The most successful cities (least violent crime, least drug problems) are predominantly white or asian. You can find data supporting this observation easily online.
We all know that, but you are afraid to say that in these days. I am not racist, but ofcourse, when you have city where only one kind of people live, you have less problems which is fact, not racism.
@@rykehuss3435 Yes, but you must be careful today, you can be marked as racist for pretty much anything now. Those antiracist warriors sometimes act as the worst racist without realizing that, in their holy war, they act the same as their "enemies." What I hate the most is that such persons can mark you as racist for not having enough black people in your country (which is not my fault) and they are actually "racist" against you from former communist country which is ok and acceptable for western world because we are obviously worse people.
You guys really need to cite sources for this information. Also, at around 8:00, that whole section was almost ripped word for word from a CNN article talking about this topic, again not cited. Would not be surprised if more of that is throughout this channel…
Interesting how always both English and German speaking cities dominate in these rankings. I'm so glad that I learned these two as my 2nd and 3rd languages 👍
Frankfurt has it´s problems like every metropole in Europe. but Frankfurt is where it is at. Frankfurt has it all. Amazing Skyscrapers with a river crossing the city. it has a international culture with one of the world´s largest airports, a great university, a great central city with every shop you wish and alot of other opportunities like restaurants of international cuisine. Also around frankfurt in the noth, where the rich sub-urban cities are located there is a beautiful landscape witch is named "Taunus" . it´s really beautiful. i´m going to move to Frankfurt in 2024.
I saw a lot of ugly things even in Vienna, I was really surprised by that after everything we hear about Vienna. If you want to see city really full of trash, I recommend visit Lisbon. 🙂
If you want a better quality of living (healthcare costs, safety, university/college tuition) then Australia and Canada beat USA. USA has more to offer and better culture as it is followed by most the world.
Almaty in Türan Qazaqstan (Kazakhstan 🇰🇿) is also the most Beautiful & Liveable City, it's so good that it looked like Vancouver of Asia, oh not to mention that Türan Qazaqstan (Kazakhstan 🇰🇿) & Canada 🇨🇦 are way similar to each other.
Its comparing to other big cites. Real Estate prices are not considered because Zurich Switzerland real estate is FAR more expensive than what you get in Toronto. These ranking does not account for REAL ESTATE price. Its about Standard of Living - which is consumption-based not wealth-based.
i am from switzerland and i kind of disagree with zurich and geneva. both have a stunning vies to the mountains, but both cities are relativly car infested compared to other swiss citys, especially geneva. walking or biking around geneva is really bad, compared to the most other cities i have visited so far in europe. in my opinion chur and basel are way nicer in switzerland.
These lists are mostly made for super rich people. To live a stressless life in most of these cities, you should earn a whole bunch of money. There are way better spots, especially in Europe
My friend said, "The best place to live is wherever the Lord wants me, or where I can do the most good."😊Alma 37: 37 says, "Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and He will direct thee for good." (Book of Mormon)
