Cant belive no one has talked about this before. "He's making dumb decisions but It's working!" line is so common for me especially in 1s. This will definitely help alot.
Another important part of adapting that I'm really used to: Adapting to your teammates' playstyle(s). I solo'd through Champ 1. You have to figure out your teammates as much as your opponents. Recognize who passes, shoots, demos, ballchases, cuts rotation, or whatever. Then make sure you're complementing their strengths, and hope they're not adapting to your original playstyle right when you adapt to theirs (which renders both adaptations moot).
@@Nate-ch4tw Yeah, if feels like the best way to play with friends is with Chaos. If at least one other person is at your skill level and you two try not to overcommit with each other, you stand a chance.
honestly if my team is down 4-0 halfway through, it's most likely all of our faults, and I don't want to continue playing with those teammates. I'd happily forfeit and go another with better teammates. Unless I'm playing with friends, then the comeback is always on
Not even trying to brag but I kinda knew this. When people would be losing by 4, most people would forfeit, but I would try and see their play style. It always turned out great for me. Once I was losing 4 to 9 and I came back 10 to 9 and he left. Idk why but this just works
@@guti-xk4qf i had a 1s game recently. I was Down 8-0 and made a comeback and won. You dont ff. Not only do you get smarter by playing it out, you also might win
@@sebastiangnielsen3538 yeah i never understood why people ff. If theres like 5 seconds left and 2 to 6 or something, thats kindof understandable but other than that you shouldnt give up
@@guti-xk4qf Not really, i abandon games if my mate is retarded, like ive said in another post i had a tm rush me in the enemy corner while i had posession. We were at 0-0 at the time and we didnt concede because of the move but its a move that lets me know my TM has 0 braincells. So i just abandoned the game because i dont need ot waste the next 4:30 to take a game well probably lose anyway. People that always say "dont give up" are generally sweaty loser try hards, i just dont care about the MMR enough to want to find out if my team mate has some redeeming qualities after seeing stuff like that.
Thank you for explaining this! It's very important to apply it in every game, it's intrinsic to soccer, and therefore, in rl too. You can also apply adaptability towards your teammates(I solo q a lot, it helps), if your teammates ballchase a lot, let them and play more passively. If they knew how to rotate properly, they would be doing it already, try to support your teammates' strengths and covers their weaknesses
yea and people say that some games your teammates are so ass that a loss is pretty much guaranteed which is true tbh, in these situations you should just try not to tilt and move on
I'm D2 and I find that the biggest challenge in lower ranks is less about adapting to the opponents but more about getting a feel for the playstyle and decisionmaking of my teammate. When my teammate and I have a similar playstyle and synergise well it usually doesn't matter all too much what the opponents are doing. But when we aren't on the same page no matter how much I adapt to the opponents it's not gonna work out.
In these situation you have to adapt to your team mate playstyle and rotation and try to play well around em, it's not gonna be the best but at least you should improve and not take too much goals
Adapt to your teammates playstyle. If you have a aggressive playstyle and so does your team mate, play more passive or be more supportive,. being able to adapt doesn’t just apply to your opponents. Just saying “it’s not gonna work out” is basicly you saying you don’t have adaptiabilty.
Very true. It’s much easier said than done to try and adapt to both your solo q teammates AND your opponents but it’s definitely possible. That’s why I almost never solo q. The fact I don’t have to keep adapting to my new teammates each game is one less thing to worry about.
Wayton put it perfectly. If you can't adapt well to solo q teammates, then remove them from the mix and find regular teammates you know and can adapt with over time. You're focusing on something shortsighted instead of doing what high level players do; Find a solution to your issue and adapt to rocket league instead of caring about the common rabble.
i got all the way out of champ 1 litereally just by rotating properly and imagining coach virge's personal bubbles around everyones car. the game feels less fun but it becomes much safer i had like 4 games in a row winning like 3-0
@@osmark86 Nah people still commit rotational atrocities even at Plat-Diamond level. Worst part is they don't get weeded out like they should because they've leveled up their mechanics instead of their Game IQ. ROTATE BACK POST DON'T CUT OFF GOALIE WAIT YOUR TURN TO CLEAR- if you weren't first in net, it's NOT your ball to clear. You get next clear.
@@turboa2432 for the most part yes. a cut in defensive rotation is needed sometimes though if the situation is massively dangerous and it could be the difference between a block or a goal against.
This video I can already tell will help me A LOT. I always had the mindset that adapting to your team mates and playing around them was the right way to adapt. I was clearly wrong. Another great informative video, thanks.
I've been trying to do this towards the end of this season, but because it's the end of the season, I've been playing a lot of extra modes (close out the season with something different). One thing I've noticed is that rumble and dropshot force you to adapt to your opponents way more than regular soccer. In rumble, it's the RNG element you have to adapt to plus your opponents. In dropshot, it's the changing position of your goal, which can alter your rotations, that you must adapt to with your opponents. Other thing' I've noticed about extra modes: Hoops is great for learning backboard defence. Snowday is great for practicing demo strategies. (it's a bloodbath if each team has a demo guy)
I think you just made me realize why I like rumble and dropshot so much (and why rumble is by far my highest rank). I have never been the most mechanically able, but I enjoy trying to read plays and always change things up. (also why I don't like soccer as much because I suck at doing that in soccer.)
I'm pretty happy that i can enter a creator code in Rl now ! I was searching for a Rocket League RU-vidr to support when the other code run out... And i'm pretty happy you got one ! You are one of the most amazing Rocket League RU-vidr i found out in youtube. Ok, Musty and the others are good too, but i really prefer your format and the ambiances you put in your videos. I'm glad i can support you will i play my favourite game right now ! Continue like that, you deserve more than 92k subscribers
Rocket league is a lot like football (soccer) tactically. If the the other team is using a high pressing intensity you up the tempo to try and catch them out of position. Their tactic was good but you shouldn’t use it for the whole game. Once you grab a few goals from it you should start playing more reserved, or else this happens.
I just watched your video and instantly solo queued and damn I was able to capitalise by watching the opponents playstyle and using his mistakes to score goals. Great vid man really appreciate it❤️
I have absolutely nothing against these types of players. Yes, I find it annoying to play against just like most people. However, that doesn’t make them any worse than me or my teammate. They just have a different strategy. It obviously works a good amount of the time which is why they are grand champ in the first place. Keep in mind they would have totally destroyed us if we hadn’t adapted.
I am a Platinum player with 0 will to become a pro Rocket League, but I recognize the "adaptability" you talked about in this video is the most useful thing to know. This mindset is not only applicable to this game, but everything in life. You're wise, and this video demonstrate it. Well done mate.
I would say there is another huge part to this, but it kind of overlaps with reviewing replays. This video focuses on how the opponents are playing, and how you can counter their playstyle. The other part to adapting is looking at your own positioning and decision making when you get scored on. This seems obvious but in my opinion is harder to spot, because you already have a bias towards your own playstyle and think you made the best decision. An example of this is when you drive up on the wall by your goal post to go for a save and get scored on in that same position multiple times in one game . A lot of players would look at the opponent and say, oh he flicked it far side and I expected him to hit it near post, or I didn't expect them to fake and go under. This is too focused on the small details and on the other player. If you are able to recognize the pattern, then you would notice that you were on the back wall every time. being on the back wall can limit your options in terms of going for the save, and staying on the ground would be a better option. What is harder is sometimes, you can go long stretches without being exploited by one team or player like that, and finding ways to "adapt" doesn't seem so obvious now. This is when you can look back on the past few games and see if there is a pattern across multiple different opponents that happen less frequently. This is also why reviewing replays is recommended so often and can be so useful. It allows you to go over things you don't remember or might have missed. I hope this helps anybody reading this :)
This is something you only see really high ranked people do, thanks for pointing it out. I won a 3v2 one time because I slowed down the pace of the game. So yeah great advice
Really good vid Wayton. I see a lot of people nowadays trying to use the “flakes fake challenge galaxy brain 200 iq” playstyle in 2s and it’s so easy to read because they don’t have the hours flakes does to pull it off. I get accused of ball chasing mindlessly, but against those players, it works because in their eyes it’s not what I SHOULD do, so they don’t expect it. As soon as they start adapting and getting around my early challenges, I start fake challenging, and the game is 100% in my control the entire time. They expect an immediate challenge since I’ve done it all game, and now I have a free ball. I’m only 1700 but adapting got me there.
Bro, that ending sequence was so dope!!! Omg. Props to the nice work. This has got to be one of my most favorite videos by you Also, I've never seen adapting to this extent. thx for enlightening me.
I saw you in TheLeagueEsports twitch chat last Thursday and couldn’t believe it was actually you lol. It was awesome to see a pretty big content creator showing their support! (Also because I’ve been subbed for awhile now) And after watching this video, I’m definitely gonna A.) think more about how the opponents are playing and B.) use creator code wayton 😉. Overall great video!!
This is the best advice I’ve seen. My mate and I lose a fair bit to players who we feel are way worse than us and are thrown off by them not playing like we expect them to. Recognising how they actually play verse how we expect them to play will definitely help in securing the wins
Dude, I’m definitely going to be using your creator code (everyone use code Wayton!) I’ve been here since 40 subs and I could already tell you would grow hugely just from your first video and here we are :) Your content is just as good as someone like sunless so I can easily see you at at least 500k soon, keep up the great work man ❤️
Wayton Pilkin already bought a black griffon for 100 credits with it, I know that’s literally nothing but I had to get something with your code on 😂 Keep up the great work man, 100k is just round the corner!
john kennedy so I’m a simp for telling him that I’ve been subbed for a long time and I like his content? Grow up, and maybe try to stop using words that you don’t understand on the internet 😉
I love that you highlighted it. The concept of playing smarter than your tm8’s is super cool. It’s been tough but I’ve been able to throw away that ego of being apart of that play. It’s rewarding when you can feel like you carried your tm8’s by not touching the ball.
I just wanted to let you know how amazing this video was. I was grinding super hard to get my GC rewards in doubles at the end of last season so I could say I was the highest rank in the game once (SSL is likely unobtainable for me). I had played over 500 games in 2 weeks and had been stuck in C3 the whole time. On the last day of the season I woke up and watched this video. I went on to play later and went on a huge win streak, getting to GC and getting all my wins, finishing at 1544 mmr. I was trying to read the opponents more than I normally did, and I believe I was adapting better than normal. Whatever the case, your videos are super high quality, and you deserve more subscribers! Keep it up, and I'll be using your creator code in rocket league from now on. :)
I generally find this sort of thing the easy part, probably why I'm high diamond with plat level mechanics. Definitely the best way to rank up when you can't put much time into the game
I'm high plat with gold level mechanics lol being able to adapt makes some opponents completely lose their cool simply because you play different than they expect and lose lol
I'm mid diamond with silver or bronze mechanics haha. In musty's guess the gc in bronze lobby video, a few of the bronzes had better advanced mechanics than me.
I completely agree. Majority of my wins come after being down early and always have against ranked opponents with similar ranks. It’s frustrating being down early sometimes but as long as u keep ur cool and learn the other team comebacks can be easy or at least do able. Personally that’s always been a good quality for me including in actual sports too since i was little
Great to see a video about this, thanks Wayton! Totally underrated skill - as well on a micro as on a macro level. Adapting gameplay, making spontanously smart decisions in not-normal situations, a sense of game and how to counter specific elements of the opponent's gameplay, but also how to adapt to your teammate(s) when you're solo-cueing.
Great vid. When you said adapt the first time I immediately thought I already look to adapt to my teams playstyle. As the video progressed I was stunned and didn't realize I spend all my time trying to work with my team and I don't focus on my opponent at all. I'm shook. I will be going forward a much more aware player. Thank You.
lmao, do anyone have games where you play against same team like 3 or more times and lose all the games, then winning 1 game and they leaving.... but honestly nothing feels better than losing to a toxic player and then absolutely destroying them next game.
This video made me recognize that I was focused so heavy on mechanics I stopped enjoying the game and stopped adapting, I think this is a really good video and I wasn’t expecting it.
If you start to implement the major tells like: do they cut rotation, or does he follow you up for aerials, or does he never come back for defense, etc, you'll hit a point where you're so tuned into those specific things that you'll be able to notice them much more quickly, allowing you to then search for another, maybe not so obvious tell... Does he consistently try to throw the ball out to the middle off the backboard or the sidewall, how accurate of a shot does he have, can he dribble, etc. Then after a few weeks of getting in maybe as deep as 2 or 3 layers, you'll find that you will notice even smaller details. If you start with one or two layers, by seasons end you'll be getting into your teammates' head so quickly that it won't even be an actual thought anymore. Best of luck out there:)
@@mimmkey He means he can't keep mental notes of details about them without writing them down, but has no time to do that and it would be useless, because you would have to keep looking at it instead of the screen.
I love this. Me and my twos partner just came back from 4 -1 to win the game in a tourney by focusing on what mistakes we made and what they were doing wrong. Always fun to come back and win when you figure out how and improve within that 5 minute game clock
Thank you so much for these videos, they're so valuable. I'm kind of a clueless player sometimes and my mind can't process games very well, I'm a bit slow sometimes 😅🤦♂,but this helps so much. The value of a teacher/coach is incredible.
A lot of my frustration with opponents going for "silly" plays is that I usually don't have the mechanical skill to punish mistakes as often as I would like and it gets frustrating
This applies so much to 1v1, probably the best gamemode to learn to adapt. Most every single 1s player just has one playstyle and its usually just "ball pressure", turn right away, challenge immediately, etc. and they will rarely break from that. Learn to flick immediately, take soft touches, etc. and you just win. Even if you go down 3 or 4 or 5 goals in a 1s game, if you recognize this is happening, you can easily come back. The opponent usually ends up thinking "Im so much better than this guy" and keeps doing the same thing, and if you just adapt a little they will concede goal after goal. Also just have a good kickoff, otherwise 1s is futile.
This is such a unique video in comparison to ALL the other videos I’ve seen for rocket league “how to...” videos. Adaptability is rarely even spoken of when I watch pros make videos to help others rank up or get better but you dove straight into the details of what it actually means and how to recognize certain situations/play styles. I’m thoroughly impressed 👏🏽 I now acknowledge another important skill that I must work on and I didn’t even consider it before this video. Thanks for the well executed video my man.
i have no words to describe how GRATEFUL i am for this video, litterly a few minutes ago i rage quit RL once again bcuz of opponents pushing stuff they shouldnt 24/7 ballchasing AND NEVER rotating out of our corner. and i didnt really think to actively adapt, but i more off expected that eventually theyll realise its a trash playstyle, but litterly every single game my opponents seem to do this.... its crazy lol big thanks im gonna work very hard on my adaptability.
Bro. I’ve been waiting for someone to cover this specific scenario. I’m usually good at adapting to teammates and opponents EXCEPT when they are overly aggressive. I never know what to do. I’ve even said the EXACT quotes you played at the beginning. Thanks for covering this bro. I hope you reach a milly in the future💯💯
This is the best video on Rocket League strategies I have ever seen, and I know of a handle of people I even play with (including myself) that could improve tremendously from this. Thanks Wayton!
We all have strengths and weaknesses. When I play I always hope my teammates can adapt to my style and I in turn try to adapt to their style. That's why I like playing with my brother, we synergize really well.
Yes. I concede too many goals in 1’s because I CLEARLY have possession but they challenge when I don’t expect it because it’s such a bad decision. I started noticing this before the video, but this definitely put words to what I was thinking. Need to adapt quicker.
A lot of the time you can adapt by "feeling" it. I've been in that same exact kickoff situation and had a subconscious reaction when you showed your view. Pretty cool! Turning that subconscious feeling into conscious decisions is a HUGE step I want to get better at.
honestly, this is really well done. im linking this video to my friend that im teaching and getting him exposure to champ level plays. we mainly play 3's without a 3rd and before i even get the chance to adapt while we are down a couple points our random 3rd tries to ff and my teammate kinda loses all hope because the 3rd usually stops playing since i never ff. so ill show this to him and maybe this'll change his mind on losing hope after that point. also first video ive seen of yours and im subbing
I also realized something when I play. Every time we score, the other team scores. I can already tell that either they are adapting to us, or they just create a new strat every time we score
Honestly i didnt think this video would be as good as it is. Most people have no idea how to adapt, so im gonna share this video around so my nooby friends can at least try for gc1 😂
This helps me a hugggeeee amount. Because normally? I'm that enemy team, pushing crazy hard crazy early. Because that's how I got to GC! But I have a hard time ADAPTING when people aren't 'holding possession' for too long. When they finally decide to do hard clears and lose possession? My whole play style goes out the window. Finally I understand hoenslty how to adapt, I can still challenge crazy early MOST of the time for my majority wins. But then when someone decides to change it up on me, I can adapt my playstyle and not lose those choice games. Beautiful.
This is actually quite easy to counter if you’re smart. Musty did a video on a 1s strategy. Basically you would ball Chase the first half of the game, and the second half you would play passive. This makes it way harder to adapt since you’re changing your playstyle midgame.
Honestly when he said that I’ve been doing this for a while after I get scored on I kind of take a second to think about how they play and how to counter that such as if they’re aggressive being more aggressive works really well but I do this a lot
I think you should have also mentioned that this is really helpful when solo queing. if you study your team's playstlye you can adapt your own playstlye to compliment theirs better. for example if ur tm8 is passive and waits to challenge you can be more aggressive and challenge quickly since you know they will be slow to challenge. I did this while solo queing 3s and it helped a lot. it also pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to play differently each game which was good for getting better.
This is the only reason I'm Platinum 1. skillwise I'm in the silver ranks, but when you can adapt and know your own limits (especially when in lower ranks) you can win games you really shouldnt. well made video! I hope this helps a lot of people in their game.
