This is the story of Rocket League season rewards and why Psyonix receives so much hate every time they release new ones. This past Rocket League season had possibly one of the worst rewards yet, and because of that, one of the worst community responses to them.

In Rocket League season 4, Psyonix released the most hated rewards of all time. The current system in which they reveal the season rewards at the end of the season, after each player has already grinded for them, is definitely not working out, and it never has. We constantly see disappointment among the community about how "horrible" the season rewards are, even when they are actually pretty good by most standards. But in this season in particular, when they are truly ugly by most standards, the response from the community was far worse than we could have imagined. Almost no one actually thinks the rewards are cool. Despite being brand new items that everyone has received, you rarely ever see them equipped in game because of how widely considered they are to be ugly.

I think the dragon banner criticism is just a silent majority type situation, where the majority of people who liked it just said nothing/didn't say much about it but the minority who disliked it were very outspoken about it

I've never been big on season rewards. Either I'm wearing an item achieved by hitting the rank everyone else in the lobby is in or above....or I'm showing off that I dropped out of that rank? It feels like having your high school diploma framed in your college dorm room.

My reason for using them: I earned it. Even when they don’t look great I still use it, i build a whole car around my rewards. It’s MY achievement, and i want to use what I earned. I don’t use it the entire season and i switch cars around a lot anyways, but I like using what i have. It isn’t showing off, it’s appreciating my progress from my start rank of silver.

Last season i defended the S3 decals in the steam forums and i saw a ton of players using them in S4. Also, i really like many items from the new S5 rocket pass (which is better than the last one imo) and some of the new tourney rewards. But these wheels are so ugly.. They just should rework them or give us a clean version. I think most players above gold generally dont want to use wheels that have to much stuff on the tire so they start flickering when you use them - especially on Octane where the whole wheel is visible. I think psyonix should focus more on cleaner but stylish wheels that are actually useable in game.

The Problem ist not the grind for the rank rewards, but the point in being at a certain rank encourages people to built an massive ego combined with Fear of losing that rank. Both this Ends up in missing self-reflection of playstyle and toxicity (which then will be answered with even more toxicity by other players)

I grind each season to get my rewards, and then i spend the rest of the season with a little bit less stress. I never use the rewards, but still. I want them. I'll feel empty without that season rewards. Plus, having each seasons rewards is a good way to track your progress because to can see how well you did each season.

After hearing the info about the banners, I'm convinced that these wheels will be semi-popular in the future. The reason I think so is because compared to previous season rewards, these stand out. Try-hards and people that like clean cars won't use them, but low ranked player and trolls definitely will.

4:50 no, I believe it’s because we’ve had the proverbial sand thrown in our face with the more recent season rewards that we finally realized we were nitpicking over arguably pretty cool rewards and they’re nothing at all bad compared to the let down that the last few season’s rewards have been. The standard for season rewards has decreased sharply and we just didn’t understand how truly bad it could be.

I think the problem with the dragon banners was awarding them at the same time they rolled out banners in general. So everybody who was maybe hoping for something to give their car a little extra flash instead had to absorb that this whole new feature was going to be a part of the game. They weren't hoping for a new feature, they were hoping for a better version of what they already had.

I started playing RL in the midst of se.3 (2021), so this is all new to me. I bought a se.4 pass, not really knowing what I'd be getting, or what to expect. I learned a lot, really quick. While I'm not dissatisfied with the season rewards, I'm also not excited over them. I like the general wheel style, and I'll use them, but I don't think I'd miss them if they disappeared from my items.

What about a different background as a season reward. For example if i hit champ, my lobby background gets in a champ arena. I dont have to tell everybody what specific rank i am, everyone knows what rank i am when i play ranked, i play rank for myself 🤷‍♂️

How about community made stuff? I found a lot of great looking decals, goal explosions and more out there which are sadly only usable with bakkesmod. I would like to have a vote on 5 different things and whatever gets the most likes will be taken as the new season reward - but with the rank based design. They could even pick one topic to keep the diversity but those wheels are no more then 5 minutes to design each - and I can only imagine using them in Snow Day...

I find it hilarious, I only played about 12 games in comp 2s, maybe 4 games in 3s and never played comp again last season, so I got no rewards. I'm really glad I didn't spend time doing ranked.

this is why i love the way league does it. everyone knows it's going to be a victorious skin, just a matter of what random champ it's gonna be. I would appreciate that in rocket league. for ranked rewards, bronze silvers and gold should only get one item (like a decal or wheels), and plats should get two items (like a decal and wheels) diamonds get 3, champs get 4 and so on. Would be cool for an SSL to have a full ssl car

The chances that strategy backfires are too high for Psyonix to even consider it: the number of players that would grind to become better and get better rewards is nowhere near the number of players that would feel like they were being discriminated for being worse. It would be a cool idea to have a full [insert rank] car, but it'd have to be a possibility for everyone.

For old season 5 imagine 5 groups of people. People that don't intend on using the reward and don't care what it is, people that don't intend on using the reward but want it to be something they *could* use, people that *will* use the reward but *don't* care what it is, people that *will* use the reward and *do* care what it is, and people that might use the reward (undecided). Out of all these groups, the first two will likely never use the reward unless it matches their loadout already. This would only be realistic for the dragon banner as the generic one doesn't really match anything in particular. People who want the reward as something they *could* use will be very vocal about not getting good rewards but will be the last people to actually use them, so it makes sense that the dragon banner saw more use when you think of it like this

I never have complained about the season rewards, but I have been in diamond for months and finally poked through champ peaking at champ 2 and was excited for anything at that point... except what we got. Those wheels look extremely simplified and I even tried finding some kind of look that goes with it but failed. It's unfortunate but just gonna have to keep up the grind.

When the new season started i asked in lobbies about the rewards because normally every other player would be using them. Five games in only one person told me they were wheels and they didnt know what they were called. I have yet to see anyone use them.

Let me be the first to say, I kinda like the wheels. They could have been better, but they could have been worse, but I can't get myself to say "I hate them". They aren't that bad. Plus, look on the bright side, if they did explosions this season, they can't do it twice and do it in season 5, so far looking to be the best season yet. And the push for UE5, makes sense why the wheels aren't highly detailed or took long.

I like the wheels and thought it was cool that they're a combination of the ruinators and haunted hoss wheels. Sticking with the seasonal theme on the reward was cool, but I do sympathize with those that grinded specifically for the reward as these probably are a let down for them.

There are *multiple problems* to last season's rewards. - They announced it very late compared to other F2P seasons. Both season 2 and season 3's were announced 3 weeks before the end date. Season 4 was less than a week. - The design doesn't change between ranks. As hilarious as the old season 13 one looks, at least they look different for each rank. - The design is too similar to the ruinator from the rocket pass. - The design itself, in a vacuum, arguably looks bad. To think last season was just the time I could finally get my friend to grind some ranked...

They have a saturation problem too, theres so many wheels in the game now its very hard for them to make something that doesnt get complained about as being the same. Still using my crimson sunbursts and sky blue chakrams. Says a lot about the development vector when the first wheels they released are still my favorite.

Psyonix could just make multiple options to choose from such as different styles of wheels that you can choose or an option to pick a goal explosion, a trail, or a topper. Stuff like that would probably eliminate the toxicity about these rewards.

I started on f2p season 2, and I loved season 2's and season 3's rewards. Have been using them every since I got them. However season 4's rewards were just so low effort, it's literally just a picture of the rank slapped onto some wheels, so I don't think I will ever use them.

I don't think it's hypocritical for the community to use dragon banners, and I think that a game developer not valuing the opinions of the community is establishing a pattern of laziness. The first lazy thing was the wheels.

I grinded for the rewards as an objective means of identifying my skill level. If I can win enough games in that rank, I feel that I am legitimately that rank. If I get in and fall out and can't attain the rewards, I don't belong there yet. I don't mind the wheels for my blue team car since I got platinum, but it doesn't go with my red team car at all. That's a bit disappointing that I get rewards that don't fit half of the time. I also got unlucky in that I played in a previous season that gave out wheels, quit for a few years, then came back and got wheels again.

I am still convinced that next season Psyonix should release Engine noises for season rewards just to mess with the community. Also, literally every season sees backlash when the rewards are announced. Personally, I kinda just wish they would stop making them. Just give people titles for the rank they got... thats it.

I think one of the main reasons as well is the sudden change in style, most ranked rewards looked cool but also simple, now we suddenly get this polarizing design that clearly wouldnt fit on most car designs, and thus most people wouldnt use at all Combined with the fact that all of them are the same except for the color and ranked logo

i usually just enjoy competing and getting better and season rewards are just a bonus which sometimes i like. these wheels actually got a response from me to my friends when i saw them. they suck real bad. usually i wouldnt care but they suck so bad before id even seen any reddit post i was like “the community is gonna light them up for this.”

Honestly if they just took the spikes away they would look so much better. It wouldn’t be the best wheels we ever saw but they’d be better

As someone who uses bakkesmod for my car designs, its funny to see when people complain about stuff like this as I dont need to grind at all to unlock them lol.

Yep, the toxic "End Season Grind" basically guarantees that no one is happy with rewards. I think they'd honestly be better just doing fruity titles every season with some Import/Exotic/BM drops depending on ranking. 1 drop Bronze to Gold, 2 drops Plat to Champ, and 3 for GC/SS.

I remember getting the normal banners alongside the dragon banners and thinking "why give us these boring versions when clearly the dragons look so much more interesting." Anyone that hated on those dragon banners back then only hated them because they were something other than wheels or boost. They were an introduction to a new customization, I reckon if psyonix had released those banners one season later there wouldnt have been nearly as much backlash, cuz we wouldve at least expected it.
