Would love to hear a narrative that strings along for multiple videos as an inside joke so you have to actually, like, watch all the videos to, like, get it, mate! But I live for them too!
I just realized that the "necklace earbuds" means this was probably supposed to be worn as a novelty necklace, hence the small size of the Cube (to be a pendant) and the the earbuds dangling sort of backwards (to hang down the sides of the neck and then be easily inserted when you want to listen to music). I'm pretty impressed with the idea for the times. It's sort of like the fad of earrings that also were tiny USB memory sticks that went around for a while.
Less so that it was a novelty necklace and moreso that they realized it made no sense to put in your pocket, so they gave you a lanyard so it could hang from your neck. I owned one of these in high school and used the lanyard for like a week before I gave in and switched to better ear phones and just used an extender so the cube could sit in my cargo pocket.
As someone who actually lived through this product, it was pretty sweet. I'm not saying that he shouldn't have destroyed it or anything, it's pretty bad compared to like an iPod. But, still, it was ergonomic to use than you'd think. Little kids usually wore really baggy pants back in the early 2000s, actually, now that I'm thinking about it, most people wore relatively baggy pants in the early 2000s. But again, the point is that it was meant to be worn as a necklace, and out of all the gimmicky wearables from that era, I'd say this is extremely unoffensive compared to what most young adults and kids would tolerate wearing back then
You know it when a RU-vidr is dedicated when he literally records a second vid just for us in compensation for the first vid disappearing for a moment or two. This basically just made me love this channel even more
He didn't record a second video though, making a video takes a lot of time. Patreons get 2 videos every week so he probably made the second video public.
I had the real version of one of these, the “mobi blue” and it was actually decent meant to be worn like a necklace and the earbuds were pretty decent. Not too bad for 2005 or whenever that was
I was not expecting it to be that small. That genuinely took me by surprise given the size of the packaging. I legitimately had to go back and look at the thumbnail and realized it had been there.

I would like to point out that when the manual declares that it's "the world's smallest MP3 player", the manual says SUPPER MINI. So that's it then. They were trying to model it after a bullion cube.
I wish I could remember the name of the one I saw at Wal-Mart several years that was even smaller than this and had a whopping 128 MB of storage. It really was about the size of a bullion cube, or maybe a standard sized 6 sided die.
I actually had this thing for years while in high school. Back then it was advertised on Ebay as "The smallest MP3 Player in the world!" I was made fun of, but i proudly carried this uncomfortably sharp cube around my neck with its silly silicon cover on it until the battery finally died and won't charge anymore.
"so boss we have this small OLED screen we bought 3 pallets of and we don't know what to do with i-" "Make it a cube" "...what?" "You heard me. Make it a c u b e"
Precisely the object which I desire to have pressing against the epidermal layer of the upper region of the limb that I most often utilize for perambulation, commonly referred to as my "leg"... *AN CUBE*
Started fucking dying when you were going on about "lost my cube in the cab" I was like "god this reminds me of bushland adventures" Did NOT expect what came next
god the mic tests are the funniest thing I have ever heard. The combination of the trash audio, the accent, the story being told, everything about them are GOLD. Never change, DankPods.
Side note the reason the headphones have that braided nylon cable is they were shooting for an an iPod shuffle 1st gen approach. The headphones as shitty as they were, were supposed to be a necklace with the digiblock hanging on it. Never wore mine as a necklace because I think back then I was rocking like jvc gummies and some cheapy koss over ears.
You said Koss and I remembered a local post with a compact that had a mirror, multiple colors of lip gloss and a paintbrush, and headphones were packed inside with all of this, the label of this whole product was the same Koss. 😂 We have this major hybrid complex of department stores and thrift stores in one of our cities, and according to the post authors that dedicated their whole page to that marketplace, that was where they found the compact. 😂 Not to forget that the whole package and the product itself screamed 2005 aggressively. 😂
I can honestly say I can’t think of a single other youtuber that records a 2nd video just to make up for a slightly wonky video that was fixed within 12 hours. I appreciate the hard work nugget man :)
Who could imagine, rewatching your stream, have breakfast, then look at youtube to see a video just upload an hour ago, feels like the nugget god just has a good day.
You should do an awards ceremony at the end of the year where you nominate the worst nugget of that year, the worst nugget buds of the year, the best mp3 of the year best headphones/earbuds of the year etc. Etc. I would love to see it and I think others would too!
The cube shape is also inconvenient for anyone who, like my ADHD self, sometimes has a _fidget cube_ in their pocket. Used to the feeling of a cube-shape object in your pocket, yes, but then _confusion_ might arise between which cube you use when you want something to do with your hands and which one you plug your earbuds into.
"No one bought this" Untrue, this was my favorite MP3 player I had in like 2008/09, 13 year old me thought this was the peak of design. Still think about my little cube sometimes and how the hell I managed to use that thing.
I had one of these, or a similar one in my youth. Mine was only 1gb, and could hold fuck all for music. I synced everything in 128kbps to squeeze as much on it as possible. I've longed for another for nostalgia
Back then I had Nokia N95 8GB and that thing was awesome for audio and spent days playing music while working, while watching rally.......... It even had decent speakers for a phone, 2 big speakers one for each side in stereo.
I think I like most about dankpods videos is that you can go back to old ones and they’re still funny and good The Bendigo part always gets me. Best reference
YT whined about the first time he uploaded the knock-off airpod video, so he had to take it down and reupload the video, read his community post for more information
He does 2 videos every week one for RU-vid and one for Patreon after show so because of that mishap with the chungus airpod video he uploaded the Patreon one for RU-vid (which he didn't have to)
Unfun fact about the screen used: that particular type of OLED screen is very common in hobbyist electronics. 0.96" diagonal, 128x64 resolution, uses the SSD1306 controller chip, and is very well supported on platforms like the Arduino. Probably made a lot of sense to use it here due to that support.
hold up, his name's wade. i never know any youtubers name unless someone calls them in the video by a name which i assume its their real name or nickname.
9:59 „ALL OF THIS … for this” That seriously made me laugh! I love the gesture behind it and how you just put it on top of the pile holding it with two fingers 🤣
I actually had one of these back probably 15ish years ago and really loved it. I've actually thought about it recently and how cool it was. To be fair it was mad cheap and worked fine as an mp3 player and fit fine in my otherwise empty pockets. Great video either way!
Pretty technologically advanced for 2006 though. :) The plastic box is such a waste though, and would contribute to global warming to manufacture it. Lol...
5:50 I know why it's called the "MTPMSCN" - it's 3 abbreviations smooshed together: MTP - Media Transfer Protocol (the defacto standard for media players transferring media over USB) MSC - Music N - Nugget (cause that's what it is)
I just realized that "MSCN" is the MP3 decoder processor made by SigmaTel Inc., used in both of the MP3 Pen, and the MP3 Cube in this video. Surprised that they coincidentally named it "Musical Nugget"...
My grandparents bought their whole display when these released, we all got one for Christmas around 2007, I mainly recall being young and looking for the presents. I found the whole display, cardboard stand and all covered in cube MP3 players
My theory: big wasteful of space probably is intended for theft chance reduction. It'll be difficult to put the package in pocket, or cutting it off takes time.
That's actually on the nose. My sister was working retail at this time when everything was being placed in these plastic clamshells of pain, and while they did see a dramatic drop in shrinkage (AKA theft) in stock put in these, there was a huge increase in customer complaints because of how much of a pain they are to get into. Now with online retailing and a push from consumers for more eco friendly packaging your seeing less and less of this stuff
@@rarrawer got it right, it’s designed to take up more shelve space making the product more visible to the customer, also means there is less room on the shelves for competing products.
Absolutely yes. It bothers me to no end when people complain about plastic waste, but in the same breath will justify shoplifting from big stores because "they can handle it." Like, yeah, how do you think they'll handle it, Karen?!?
Me, before the paper was removed: “Oh, he’s obviously going to play up the size, but there’s no way it’s actually that small.” It was actually that small.
Man ive been dealing with depression for years, and your content genuinely makes me laugh like an idiot, you thanks us for our dollars, i thank you for the laughs.
I actually had this cube mp3 player back in the day lol. It was actually awesome for what it was. The earbuds cable doubled as a dongle to keep you from loosing it. The FM radio worked pretty well and it actually had good audio quality. I used this thing for a few years until I got my Zune. Also in the US these actually came in a small cube shaped box lol.
