My first time watching Whiplash (2014). INCREDIBLE MOVIE! What a ride, I was optimistic, nervous, excited, tense all at the same time. This film is filled with great music and great performances. I was left not entirely sure what to feel, but knowing we witnessed something special. I hope you enjoyed my Whiplash movie reaction & commentary

This film was made in just 19 days, and toward the end Damien Chazelle was badly injured in a car accident but insisted on finishing on schedule. And yes, the scene with Andrew insisting on playing after a car accident was written before this, which is pretty eerie.

As a drummer since childhood, the message I took away from this movie is that monsters make other monsters, no amount of musical success is worth this kind of abuse - and Andrew’s treatment of the others in his life shows how infectious Fletcher’s abuse is.

@@CasualNerdReactions sadly he did not and never truly understood any of it. The ending is tragic not triumphant. He essentially went back to his abuser and is now fully committed to his toxic relationship with his abuser. It goes without saying Nehman probably turned out to be just as toxic as a musician as Fletcher. I think this is what his Dad saw during his final show...I think he realized then and there that he lost his son to his obsession and to Fletcher. It is such a tragic movie.
@sav2902
@sav2902 Год назад
@@Nick_CF for me i didn't see it as tragic. in a sense, IT WAS triumphant for andrew, in his eyes. he never cared about being abused. if he did, he would have never practiced, never would have tried so hard, never would have broken up with his girlfriend, and would have just quit the studio band after the iconic "not my tempo" scene. there were plenty of scenes that hinted that neiman agreed with the jones & parker ideology (like the one where he kept nodding when fletcher told him this story, him actually knowing this story in the first place, and even trying to defend fletcher when his dad wanted him to testify against fletcher, etc.) andrew never wanted anything in life than being one of the greats and he would have done anything to achieve it. this drive is what made fletcher take him, fletcher took a chance to see if andrew could handle how he manages things. this drive is what makes andrew andrew; he doesn't care about doing the hardest things as long as he accomplishes his end goal. if you see it in this way and in his eyes, the ending was not tragic. for us the audience, it obviously is but it really depends on the perspective you're seeing it in. mans took a big big step into his career displaying a masterclass of a performance in front of the best musicians in the world and actually got the approval of the man he used to highly seek approval from, he KNEW in that moment that he was well on his path to becoming one of the greats. i think the father was outright conflicted. he saw how good of a player his son actually was and saw where his confidence and arrogance came from, but he also knew how hard neiman had to work for it and how much abuse he took and how much self-harm he had done to himself to achieve this level. it may be sad for him but i don't feel the need to pity him because he is one-dimensional and didn't see the way andrew saw life and never tried to understand it. he never understood the concept of wanting something so badly that he would do anything in the world to attain that. that's why he didn't become a successful writer and was satisfied with his boring lifestyle. don't get me wrong, i don't think the values that were shown in the movie were correct, i don't think the movie is motivational, i think everything fletcher did was bad; all the abuse, his ideology, and how he sees music as a whole. in a way, yes, the ending was very tragic in the audience's and his father's eyes, but the way i see it the movie is not about the father and the audience. the movie is about andrew, and him being on that skill level and stage in his life at that very moment means he actually has done something right in order to be closer in achieving his dream and i don't think that andrew sees that moment as not being triumphant.

America needs to recognise that Pavlovian method is just an excuse for sociopaths to get their kicks. It doesn't work longterm. The rest of the world knew this decades ago. America is still in love with it. Even though several movies show it up. Full Metal Jacket, Whiplash etc etc.

I saw this for the first time closing night at my city's film festival (Windsor International Film Festival in Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and I've rarely been part of a more electric movie audience. 11:29 I always go back and forth on how I feel about that scene. I mean he definitely started taking pot shots at those two other kids (I still have no clue who they are in relation to him after seeing this film multiple times). But on the other hand, they all felt like they were being passive aggressive dicks to him from the get go and undermining his accomplishments. So I also feel like he was just standing up for himself there. I mean sure he could have done it without getting negative himself, but I also feel like that family had it coming to them, whoever they were. Also, his father's character really pissed me off there. He did the worst possible thing in that situation in my mind. Either stick up for your kid, or reprimand him for getting nasty. But he just sat there, allowed him to behave like that, but then took the other people's side and tried to put down his own son. Fuck that.

@CasualNerdReactions
@CasualNerdReactions Год назад
Good point! I saw it as triumphant because it felt like what fletcher wanted was to destroy Andrew. So when Andrew went back in and then took control it felt pretty awesome. I didn’t really see it as fletcher winning, but I suppose he did which is definitely horrific. The question for me is what happens after? Does Andrew leave Fletcher and break the cycle or stay in step with him. I assumed it would be the former. Either way there are a lot of quality conversations that could come from this film.
@moonlitegram
@moonlitegram Год назад
I don't agree with the framing of this interpretation. Andrew clearly takes control of his life here and definitely scores a win for himself here. If Fletcher wins too in that process, fine, but what does that matter? The important thing is that Andrew took control of his life and achieved what he wanted. Andrew's father doesn't represent his pure path in life. This wasn't a question as to whether Andrew should wind up like Fletcher or like his father. So the fact that he left his father behind here, and the fact that Fletcher got enjoyment out of this, really is inconsequential. What's important is that Andrew seized the moment for himself and achieved what he set out for. It's not like his dream to be great was just something Fletcher implanted in him. We start the film out with him practicing and striving to be great. Andrew wins in the end. Who cares if Fletcher does too?
@x3mslayer
@x3mslayer Год назад
This is such a peculiar movie. You can't get enough of it. And you know the story doesn't end with the movie, the ways that Andrew's life can go after that is up to our imagination. But it's a simple story, yet impactful and fun and characters are good.
@CasualNerdReactions

@@CasualNerdReactions the writer/director Damien Chazelle said in an interview that he imagines Andrew would be dead at 30 of an overdose which is so dark, but rewatching with that in mind just makes Whiplash even more tragic. @@maxmccarty3131Andrew wanted to be the best and he achieved it. The movie is not only some tragic sad story, it has triumphs too. The director saying he pictures Andrew unalive at 30 doesn't mean that's what happens to him, it's a prediction.

GOD I hated playing Caravan! I’m a brass player and I really 1) played it too much and 2) love marching bands (High School, Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International and Bands of America competitions) more than life, itself. I was also a counter-tenor and made 1st Alternate I’m the Texas All-State Choir. Do you realize how big Texas is and how many High Schools there are? I worked HARD and had the same kind of band director in college. I switched to color guard (flags, rifles, sabers and dance) and was much happier. I’m a competitive person but I DON’T let anyone talk to me like that. My students had a great time doing guard and won State Championships, about 5 times… I keep forgetting. I taught my students that rehearsals are where contests are won… contests are merely where you go to pick up the trophy. They all understood that and became very dedicated. They had a great time! I have judged all across the U.S., so whichever High School you went to and they have a band, it’s a good chance that I judged them. Good times!

To be the best takes disciplined focus. Would Andrew have risen to the level he did if he had been 'distracted' by Nicole? He didn't disrespect her, or himself, by stringing her along, but made a decision on what was most important to him. Did he regret the way things ended between him and Nicole? Maybe, but I guarantee he would have regretted not devoting everything to his drumming and forever wondering, what if.

"There are no two words in the English language more harmful than: good job" I slightly disagree. I would add "unearned" in between "two words" in that sentence and that would be my philosophy. Fun Fact: The film was shot in 19 days. Drummer Boy Fact: Miles Teller, who has played the drums since he was 15, received blisters on his hands due to the vigorous, unconventional style of jazz drumming. Some of his blood was on the drumsticks and the drum set as a result. During the more intense practice scenes, the director wouldn't yell "cut!" so that Miles Teller would keep drumming until he exhausted himself. Landing Blows Fact: For the slapping scene, J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller filmed several takes with Simmons only miming the slap. For the final take, Simmons and Teller decided to film the scene with a real, genuine slap. This is the take that is in the film. J.K. Simmons suffered two cracked ribs when Miles Teller tackled him during the last two days of shooting. Simmons managed to continue working despite his injury.

I have a theory: I don't think Neiman was off-tempo in the "not my tempo" scene. At all. I think Fletcher was putting pressure on him just for the sake of it in order to test him. He saw that Neiman improved from his first not-so-good meeting to the second one, so he put pressure on him again. In Fletcher's mind, there are only two outcomes: Neiman rises to the occasion, in which case Fletcher gets what he wants, or he breaks, in which case he knows (in his mind at least) Neiman will never be great and he can stop wasting time on him. Also, that "good job" scene has a problem. He should be condemning "good enough" rather than "good job". "Good job" is praise, while "good enough" is the acceptance of mediocrity that Fletcher laments. It's a small failure on the movie's part, but since the entire scene is about not letting small screwups slide, I think it deserves to be mentioned.

19:01-19:39 Fletcher contradicts himself here. First he wants to claim that Charlie Parker wouldn't have been Charlie Parker if Jones hadn't thrown the cymbal at his head. But then goes on to argue that a "Charlie Parker" would never be discouraged from being a "Charlie Parker" no matter how far you push them. So which is it, Fletcher? Are the greats so driven and focused on achieving their goal that nothing is going to get in the way of them eventually becoming one of the greats - even if you constantly berate and belittle them and throw shit at their heads? Or are they so flimsy in their dedication that someone simply telling them "good job" is going to make them completely complacent and prevent them striving to be great? His arguments are are completely absurd when you think about them.

About the question if it was possible to get the same result without Fletcher doing what he did.. i don´t think so. You know, i see Fletcher like Steve Jobs. He was a piece of shit human being but he was ruthlessly efficient, he saw something and he dug deep to get it (we would literally live in a different world without people like him popping up from time to time). That genius musician was inside Andrew all the time, hidden under his insecurities, softness, self-doubt, lack of confidence, etc. Being the best of the best at any field will always mean to have an obsession, and obsessions are NEVER a healthy thing. You just get to pick one or the other if that´s what you want, and some people do want to be the best of the best. I don´t judge.
