The New Living Translation Catholic Reader's Edition (ISBN 9781496414014) is a sturdy hardback 9 5/16 x 6 5/16 x 1 7/16 inches in dimensions, printed in Italy. The text block is glued, but it easily lies open in Genesis.
The copyright page carries a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur. The volume includes all of the Deuterocanonical books in the order they are normally found in Catholic Bibles.
This edition features a dark, somewhat bold 9 point font. Line spacing is generous. The line-matched text is formatted into two columns, organized into paragraphs. There are no references, but the New Living Translation provides numerous text and translation notes in a 7 point font. Some of these notes alert the reader when a New Testament author quotes from an ancient translation, like the Septuagint, rather than follow the Masoretic reading.
The approximately 36 gsm paper is sufficiently opaque, and show-through (ghosting) is not troublesome. The paper is relatively matte (i.e., no waxy coating), so glare is minimal.
The words of Christ are printed in black ink.
The volume includes nine (9) color maps on heavy, glossy paper. One dark blue ribbon marker is provided, as are attractive white head and tail bands.
The New Living Translation is a relatively free or loose translation. It employs modern gender inclusive language.

Lol! If I hadn't been hosting this channel, I wouldn't have purchased this Bible either. But a viewer suggested it, I didn't have a copy of the NLT, this edition is not very expensive, and it seemed likely that a video review of it could be of use to Catholic viewers. I truly enjoy this edition of the NLT. It is a fantastic translation (not paraphrase) that brings the text alive when reading. I was a working pastor when the NLT first came out and received a Protestant reader's edition for free from Tyndale at that time. I prefer the Catholic Edition because it contains the Deuterocanonicals in their proper OT order. I also appreciate the black letter edition over red letter. I did add more ribbons to facilitate study. I would preach and teach from this version. It communicates to modern listeners and readers in ways other translations do not.

I bought a copy of this bible, partly because of your review and partly because of a recommendation from a Catholic priest that I know. I am impressed with the book. It is well made and sturdy. Despite its glued binding I think it is likely to last for many years even after heavy use. Thanks for your review.

I obtained this edition when I was still a Dominican friar in 2017. I loved the NLT from my Baptist youth because I could read it like a novel and enjoy its smoothness. I never used it for serious study however. The Indian Catholic Bishops have done much to advance English bibles in the Catholic world. They are the reason a huge chunk of Anglophones (England, Wales, Scotland, India) now use the ESV-CE in the lectionary. In any case, your review here is excellent! Imho, your reviews are the standard for RU-vid Bible reviews. Well done.

Thanks again for another quality review, I'm looking forward to seeing where it sits on the chart. I've really been won over by the NLT. I'm currently working my way through the Anglicized edition. As a translation for reading large sections at once it is very good. I also think the footnotes are excellent, often giving a literal rendering to more 'paraphrased' verses so you get the best of both worlds. It also footnotes Septuagint readings. I think it accompanies a more formal equivalent translation very well. I really like the cover design and colour scheme of this Catholic edition.

Thanks for the kind comment, Tim! It may take me some time to score the NLT: The more interpretive translations are challenging to score because they include so may "liberties." Yes, I noticed footnotes with Septuagint readings as I was scoring the NLT for the Masoretic Text chart. In particular, the NLT will not infrequently follow the Masoretic Text in the Old Testament, but provide a helpful footnote to render the Septuagint and to reference the New Testament passages where the Septuagint rendering is quoted.

Do you have a review of it? I checked Amazon and see that they have finally produced a leather bound edition. I think that I will be buying that asap. Thanks for the kind comments, Ken! I reviewed the paperback edition of the ESV-CE (Augustine Bible) some time ago. I haven't seen the leather edition. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rp37KfaRoI4.html . By the way, this NLT Catholic Readers Edition video has 81 likes and one dislike at the moment. I typically switch the settings so that the like and dislike counts don't show. I think that may discourage the trolls. But likes are very much appreciated, since the RU-vid algorithms use them, I think.

I always say that the NLT is the "best of the worst" in terms of paraphrases/dynamic equivalence translations, because it is consistently improving and generally well-written. It makes a good Bible for straight reading and for small group devotions, but not as much for Lectio Divina or scholarly study.

Thank you for reviewing this Bible. I, sometimes, have Catholic NLT translations pop up in social media advertisements and see them in the Christian Books catalog. However, I skipped over them because I don't know anyone in my circle that uses that translation. (They all seem to stick with the tried-and-true translions; even the new ESV-CE isn't gaining much ground in my larger circle.) It seems interesting. It may be a useful translation for older children, to help with comprehension.

I have never heard of an NLT Catholic Edition, so glad you reviewed it. The NLT is one of my favorite translations. The Bible seems nice, but could prob use a second ribbon for serious study.

Thanks for commenting, Joe! Before a viewer suggested I make a video about it, I had never heard of the NLT-CE either. I've never tried to insert a ribbon into a glued spine. If I decide I need more ribbons, I'll likely paste them to a card and slide it between the back of the text block and the cover.

Just bought the NLT Illustrated Study Bible to read to my kids. Would love to see you score it on your continuum. For my personal and seminary studies I prefer the LSB/NASB95, ESV, HCSB and NET. But wanted something that my kids would more easily understand but that wasn’t a full out paraphrase by one man and was still scholarly.

I am impressed by the names for Deuterocanonical translation team (the NLT always had an impressive list of translators). It makes me think this isn't some "we let the Roman Catholic Church do it themselves" approach, but a well thought out, "we did this in house", addition to the NLT translation. I also appreciate the layout of some of the lists in the NLT (you showed a glimpse of one example in Numbers 13, but see also Nehemiah 7, Numbers 2, and Revelation 7) I wish other translations laid out these passages like the NLT does - the dot leaders really help readability. Thank you for the review, I have been recently considering buying an NLT-CE.

Thanks for commenting, Peter! The list in Numbers 13.4-15 reminds me of the tables one finds in study Bibles, complete with column headings. I agree regarding the utility of the dot leaders. I also found the paragraph formatting in, say, Joshua 13 interesting and helpful, where the descriptions of tribal territories are offset from the main text as though they were quotations (with the same unjustified right edge). Lengthy monologues (e.g., 2 Samuel 7.5-16) and letters (e.g., Ezra 4.11-16) are formatted the same way. Very useful in comprehending the structure of a passage at a glance.

I find that many of their translation choices are completely justifiable as long as the literal readings are footnoted. Too bad the translation itself doesn't quite have the punch of the original Living Bible, despite some improvements in accuracy. I'd still favor the Revised English Bible and Good News Bible for translations that rely heavily on dynamic equivalence.

Back in 2001, Tyndale House published a NLB "Holy Bible: Catholic Reference Edition." It did not have an imprimatur, and I remember that the bishops warned Catholics against using it. As I recall, the problem was with the book introductions. Does anyone know what the exact issues were and what has changed?

Because of your channel I bought half a dozen Bibles instead of buying just one, probably will read some of these only. I feel like I am living in Bible belt now ^_^ Btw, the RSV Study Bible with Apocrypha is really the best one as a single source Bible as it is lightly annotated with moderate book intros and has the complete canon, also the JPS Tanakh Bible is the only option in English for Jewish Bible. Should have bought only these two as both are light to read, but bought other ones. The Quran translation which is comparable is the Oxford Quran.

@@RGrantJones Yeah, that one. I didn't bought it as I have already bought NRSV with Deutro, ESV, RNJB, KJV, and Tanakh. But as a single source Oxford RSV Study Bible is quite good, notes are fine too. I usually avoid skeptical notes in Jewish and Christian Bibles.

@@RGrantJones One surprising thing about Tanakh is that the way it reads and their order of books, the whole flavor and feel of OT changes because of it. I am not sure if book of Chronicles should come at the end, is it historically chronological? Which was the last book of OT before the start of Intertestamental era?

For instance, Amazon sells a paperback that it calls "World English Bible: 2016 Update Paperback - September 19, 2016". There appears to be a paperback from Bible Domain Publishing also, and a hardback from Athanatos Publishing Group.

David Dewey, in his "A User's Guide to Bible Translations," calls it a "thoroughgoing revision" of the old Living Bible. The Living Bible was a one-man effort, based -- as I understand it -- on the American Standard Version. The NLT was translated by a committee from the original languages.

Not a translation I'd be quick to get, nevertheless, it's well done. A thing I wished all Bible publishers would do is to make it easier for us readers to be able to identify translators supplied words. Also, unless it's a readers edition, every Bible should have the full set of footnotes showing manuscript variations, explanations of Hebrew and Greek words etc. I get that not all will be like the NET but at least show us the alternatives, or let us know when certain pronouns are plural or singular and so forth.

Thanks for commenting, Edward! I just checked John 3.7 (one of the KJV Onlyists' favorite verses to use to show the weakness of modern translations), and the NLT includes a footnote that reads, "The Greek word for _you_ is plural; also in 3:12". But the NLT is simply much too interpretive for italics to be practical. Here's Ephesians 1.5 in the NLT: "God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure." Compare that to a relatively literal translation like the ASV or NKJV, and you may end up wondering whether you shouldn't italicize the entire verse, except perhaps "to himself" and "Jesus Christ".

@@RGrantJones That's my problem with these types of Bible. I'm not sure about there usefulness to be honest, as I believe that a more literal translation of the Bible is always a better idea. I want, and I believe that others should too, be able to know what the writers wrote. It may mean that I may have to do a little bit more work to get a complete understanding of the Bible, but that's what should really happen in any case. When one sits down with the word of God, there should be some amount of "wrestling" to get the full idea of the the writer said rather than having a translation committee telling me what they think the writer was trying to say. That leaves the burden of interpretation on me the reader and because I want to be a faithful Christian, it then becomes increasingly important for me to rightly "divide" the word of truth. While I don't think that there is any need for another new translation of the Bible, I'm not that naive as to think that there will not be another. Whether they are going to be new translations or updates of current ones, I sadly believe that they are going to get freer and freer in their translations to the point of becoming unrecognisable because people don't want to do the leg work in studying their Bibles, they are quite happy to let someone else do it for them, even to point of diminished returns.

@@edwardgraham9443 - I agree in that I appreciate translations that preserve the ambiguities present in the original languages, so I can consider the range of possible interpretations. Loose translations like this one have value in that they sometimes present interpretations that didn't occur to me, but I would never rely on the Jerusalem Bible, the New English Bible, or the NLT for my primary translation.

@@RGrantJones I see your point. But at what point does a translation become too free. Where is the cut off point. The sacredness and importance of the Scriptures is too great to leave to such an arbitrary decision. It might well be that we all should just learn to read Hebrew and Greek and read it from the copies of the originals. But that would then only lead to another problem, which are the correct copies of the original, Alexandrian or Byzantine text type? That would maybe be a good idea for another poll. Alexandrian vs Byzantine text type. I can already see the KJVOs. Maybe it's better to let sleeping dogs lie. 😂😂😂

While I do not want to dismiss the NLT completely, the idea that anyone would need a translation more "loose" or "free" than the NIV strikes me as odd. What view of the faith do you have, when you believe that the translation needs to be this conversational, to "win souls" and be read? Maybe for children and young teenagers. Maybe for those COMPLETELY unfamiliar with the Bible, and only then as a temporary crutch. But if you depend on it for too long, I'm afraid of what might sneak into your theology. If the point is to feel good and be as easy to read as possible, one might as well read the message translation. Nevertheless, a good review of the book itself.

The Catholic edition is no different with the exception of the Deuterocanonical books inserted in Septuagint order. IT is a great translation and text.
