By now you've probably heard of the NBA's dreaded second apron.
It's already loomed large this summer as the league's highest spending teams try to navigate these murky new waters

As an NHL and NBA fan, damn. I stand by my take that in any cap world, drafted and home grown talent should have some cap relief effect. If you drafted and trained a player (like JT) you should be rewarded for it, not penalized.

The Celtics got their picks from the Nets (Tatum/Brown). You can keep you own player, that’s why Bird rules exist. OKC and other small market teams building through the draft is not like their like to develop the youth, it’s they only way to be competitive because they have 0 chance to land free agents.

Lol you definitely a Celtics fan. If JT and JB wanna stay together, take a pay cut. Players likes Duncan, Brady, and Curry did it to keep their teams together. Kobe’s highest paid contract was a 7 year 136 mil contract. These players can leave some on the table. If they wanna keep taking 300 mil, then don’t complain when the team gets gutted.

I think the problem with the payrolls is the max salary. Take Phoenix, their 3 main players, Booker, Durant and Beal are being paid $150 million because they are getting the max salary. I think teams are going to take a hard look at offering max contracts to top talent next year. They take too much of the payroll and there are going to be teams that will not take those players on in free agency.

Yeah it’s very interesting when compared to the NHL where there is tons of variation in the salaries and not a single player makes the max. You’re actually left wondering what a contract will look like going into free agency. In the NBA, “star” players get the absolute most that they are eligible for every single time. I’m definitely pro-labour/ player, I’m not saying that any of them should take pay cuts. I also get that a star in the NBA is worth WAAAAY more to his team than in the NHL. It’s just fascinating to watch it play out the same way every single time.

People are too anxious to put an ''end'' to superteams (even though all superteams since the Warriors failed catastrophically), that I think they are being overall shortsighted here: yes, its true that teams who spend big to attract stars will be hampered... but so will teams that *actually draft well*. The OKC Thunder right now, for example, has a bounty of young talent... what happens when they all go into their actual big contracts? Shai and Chet are no-brainers, but so is JDub. You'd also want to keep Jay Will, Lu Dort, and I haven't even reached other young guys who showed very good potential, like Aaron Wiggins and Cason Wallace. A team like the Celtics already was fearful of looking forward knowing they had 2 Max players in their roster (and had to capitalize before the second apron hit), what is OKC gonna do having 3 of them AND other guys? Its an even worse situation then they were when they *let go of fucking James Harden*. The idea is good, but they NEED to tinker with it a bit more, specially when it comes to players drafted by the team. As it is its only gonna encourage teams to find THE guy and give up instantly on their other drafted players.
@felipecouto1102
@felipecouto1102 25 дней назад
@nicolasmartinez795 They didn't ''lost their meaning'', the teams don't chose to give money away randomly, they pay the market value. If they don't pay, another team will. If they want to pay less to their third guy because they want to build a better team and he isn't ''worth it'', too bad, a mid-level team wanting to be more competitive will just snag them. This will make teams that *actually* draft and develop well only have a small window to capitalize on their players, and then the teams who *don't* draft and develop will just take players from them.

@@artix003 That was different, Ellis was the best player but saw that the front office was putting too much stock on Curry. He said from day 1 that eventually it would have to be either him or Curry. For teams like OKC in recent years its not the same thing. Shai isn't asking the front office to trade JDub or Chet. And during the KD-Russ-Harden era, they also didn't want to throw away Harden, they did it cuz they didn't want to pay the luxury tax. At the end of the day the money OKC didn't want to pay Harden was chunk change compared to other deals after the new CBA.

@nicolasmartinez795 lol as if it's the team wanting to overpay subpar stars. It's those "stars" that are demanding max/super max money when they are barely all star level. Just look at PG13's contract he is all star level but he ain't 50M worth star seller level. He's always injured and lost his carrying power post-Indy. I’m sure a few owners have already thought about relaxing the rules for players who never leave the team that drafted them. What I’m curious about is why they couldn’t agree on this. A bad team like Detroit could potentially keep all its talent, not pay the tax, and just keep shuffling coaches until one sticks. And on the other end, you could have a Warriors team that are just able to keep their big 3 until retirement for that fairytale ending.

Since KG and Ray Allen went to the Celtics I believe in ‘08, what’s kept the league growing is roster turnover. But let me be specific: SUPERSTAR roster turnover. No one cares about Bruce brown and KCP leaving Denver except Nuggets fans and hardcores. Once you have NBA finals featuring the Pacers and Kings followed by the Thunder and some other small market team no one cares about and NBA finals ratings go down the drain, the NBA will change this real quick. I liked the escalating luxury tax. Even Balmer was going to get sick of spending $200M in luxury taxes for a bunch of first round exit bums. This is just ridiculous. All it does it help owners spend less with an excuse and make good guys who are team players like Brunson take significantly less than someone with comparable talent who has no title aspirations just wants to make as much money as possible. We as fans often forget we care a lot more about winning than most of the players. That’s not talked about nearly enough but it’s a stone cold fact

To answer that last question, you only need to turn to the big daddy in the room, the NFL. As early as 1960, when he became commissioner, Rozelle saw the need for parity. Having all your teams having a good shot at winning (over time) is a good thing. Having a reverse draft--where losing teams picked before winning teams was one of them. But the big innovation was revenue sharing. This allowed teams in smaller markets to compete on an even footing with teams from New York, Chicago, and L.A. You only have to see baseball's continuing struggle with this--where teams like the Dodgers and Yankees practically buy pennants--to understand. The NBA did a brilliant thing when David Stern took over by agreeing to guarantee the players 55% of the gross revenues. This saved the league and forced it to also come to terms with limiting what teams could do with salaries. While it's been tweaked in the decades since (decades!), the basic premise remains: establish a minimum and a maximum, and then let teams compete within that. And let's face it, the best-run franchises in basketball do most of the winning. If you could buy your way to a championship based on your market, the Knicks and the Nets would be right up there with the Lakers and the Celtics in terms of championships.

I love the fact the Celtics have the most titles without ever getting any high priced free agents. I remember when we got a sniff of KDs presence and we got all excited, even though he didn't come to Boston. Every Celtics title was built with shrewd drafts, home grown players and smart trades. And yet, Boston will have to deal with more inept NBA governance. Won't matter. LA, New York, Golden State, Miami can all try to draw big names. The C's will win with Stevens...

I'm in favor of the CBA primarily because each team will have an opportunity to begin the season as a hopeful playoff team increasing local attendance and it will cause marginal veteran players to have higher value later in their careers as teams look to maximize talent and price The CBA does hurt small market teams that draft well and do player development but that is counterbalanced by the larger markets being penalized for hitting the second apron too often. The league does better for a casual fandom when there are dynasties and marketable rivalries but I'm in favor of league attempting to get as many fanbases involved through the in season tournament and the play in teams for the final two playoff spots

This makes me wonder why are the salary caps different in the NFL and in the NBA? What if the NBA had a HARD salary cap like in the NFL? NFL has a HARD salary cap and the league still generates millions of dollars in views and revenue, this means the NBA should copy the NFL and have a HARD salary cap as well.

The new CBA is similar to the NFL hard cap. They basically don't want another superteam to happen to the NBA and be able to keep a competitive balance for the agency market. Honestly, I like the new rules bc this will stop superteams from happening so much.

Players need to start taking a page out of Duncan, Steph, Brady, and Brunson’s playbook. If you wanna keep your team together and go on a run, take a pay cut. You can’t sign a 300+ mil contract and then complain about team building. Kobe’s biggest contract was 7 years 136 mil. These players can leave some on the table to make sure they’re surrounded by adequate talent. If they play their cards right, endorsements from winning will make up the difference.
