With the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, lots of fans have been pitching a shared Nintendo Cinematic Universe that could pave the way for a Super Smash Bros. film. Let me explain why I think that isn't a very good idea.

I feel like a shared multiverse would work better, that way they can crossover, without having to share a universe

That's one way. Or they could just have everything taken place in the same universal space and just have different galaxies where events take place like they already established in the movie.

@@VunderGuy Keep in mind that the games have crossed over before. Samus shows up in Kirby's Dreamland 3, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Wario all cameo in Kirby SuperStar Ultra, Samus and Link cameo in Super Mario RPG, among other things. They could be ignored, but there are many hints that, at least, their individual universes have some sort of link. The likes of Galeem and especially Tabuu could easily be used to explain a multiverse that gets connected thru shenanigans in a Smash bros movie. I think it would make most sense for some games to be in the same universe, say for example Kirby and Metroid, but for others to be relegated to other universes within a Multiverse. There is a lot of conflict between the games that could maybe be resolved thru every individual world being its own planet throughout a vast universe, but with dimensional manipulation BS of the smash bros villains it could work either way.

What people is calling "Super Hero Fatigue" is really more likely "Cinematic Universe Fatigue". A traditional Film Series you'll at best get one every 2-3 years perfectly manageable. A Cinematic Universe getting like 3-4 Films a Year plus all the TV Shows because it is all important to the Big Crossover End Goal and any competitors trying to do the same with their own. Cinematic Universes are a huge time commitment. Still can do Movies on all Popular Video Games Series Nintendo or otherwise, but let them be their own continuity.

Man you say that like Smash Bros requires a high degree of interconnectivity and shared plot points when it's literally as simple as a bored hand shaped Eldritch abomination sees all these different and awesome heroes go about their daily adventures who've never met before, kidnaps them, and makes them fight for his amusement under penalty of their death and the death of their homeworld. Bam. All the setup and conflict you need for movie number one.
@Butwhythough881
@Butwhythough881 Год назад
@@VunderGuy That’s the main issue with a Smash Bros and the main thing the Mario movie was criticized for: the plot. You see with a video game like Smash Bros, you don’t question why Mario, Pikachu and others are fighting. You just want to pick your favorite nintendo character and play the match. With a movie that interactivity is taken away and the core is the story and that’s where the Mario movie for many fell apart. Even Subspace Emissary, though not terrible, is very bare bones and minimalistic and still relies on the interactivity of playing through levels with characters.

I don't necessarily want a shared universe, but I'd still love for a Smash Bros movie to happen. Have it work like a TV Special crossover like the Jimmy Timmy Power Hour. Have them team up for the movie, and then all return home at the end never to speak of it again until the next Smash movie. Either that, or just have the Smash movie be a completely separate entity. Maybe Master Hand just creates the entire Smash world, characters included and it all takes place there. Maybe they could even set it up by having Master Hand viewing the worlds of the various movies as he's crafting it.

Also the MCU is made up of movies that are entirely PG13, it would be weird if Metroid for example was made into a PG movie, like Mario was. I'm also kind of tired of everything needing to be a cinematic universe. DC tried it and it went terribly wrong, and Scoob tried it and I doubt the Hanna-Barbera Cinematic universe will be all that good. Unfortunately this ain't the 2000s or the 1980s anymore where everything can just be a simple trilogy. In the modern Hollywood landscape of the 2020s you gotta make profit off of film franchises. Hollywood is always going to bring back old forgotten IPs and try to milk it for all its worth in the form of 10 or more film installments like the MCU. We're still going to have more DC and more Monsterverse movies are on the way. Speaking of the Monsterverse maybe Tokusatsu in the west may become more popular in the future.

Worth noting that Nintendo now has their own film studio called Nintendo Pictures after they purchased Dynamo Pictures a couple years ago (the guys who made the Pikmin shorts). I assume Nintendo did this to consolidate a studio for game cutscenes, but it would be really cool if Nintendo managed to develop feature films in-house. They have the money and talent for the animation. As for the script, get some writers from Intelligent Systems, HAL & Sakura, or even the Splatoon guys, Hisashi Nogami and Shintaro Sato. They all know how to write really well done PG stories.

I feel like stand-alone movies with little to no crossing with other Nintendo movies, but if Nintendo ever felt up to it they could either A. have the characters but in a different version(dolls, toys, etc.) do the cross-over, could work very well for smash type thing. Or B. Keep the crossing over with other series to a VERY self-contained, going back to Smash it could be Sephiroth and Galeem working together to get the strongest Nintendo fighters to revive some true God or some, I don't know just spitballing ideas here, overall just don't make them CONNECTED, make them CROSS-OVER

No… just… no… I don’t want a film adaptation of World of Light. Not only is it a sparse last-minute Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame knockoff, but who even wants to watch it? The opening alone initially had me scarred for life, but sometime immediately after that, it makes no sense at all, not to be taken seriously, and it shouldn’t matter. It’s just a drag that went on for too long. Having a build-up for story and characterization is not a way to go. No seriously, who wants to watch an Inkling girl crying and wailing thinking all hope for a doomed universe is lost? Who wants to watch Princess Zelda expressing doubts about the chances of defeating Galeem and Dharkon after failing to stop Galeem during the fighters’ first encounter? Who wants to watch Mario giving a Braveheart/Return of the King pre-battle speech? ………………… Didn’t think so! I don’t even know why people want this and I frankly don’t even want to envision it! I can envision anything Smash-related in any shape or form, but nothing overarching and disturbing as this!

I feel like you’re assuming it has to adhere to a exact copy of how marvel has created it’s universe. But no, it doesn’t at all. I don’t see any reason why every movie could stand completely on his it’s own, or even headed by a different studio. A “Smash Bros” style crossover movie doesn’t have to logically come up with reasons why every character comes together, they didn’t feel the need to do that in the games, and judging by the Mario movie, Nintendo doesn’t really care to follow a ton of logic either lol. Every movie doesn’t have to convolutedly tie into each other like Marvel does, I could absolutely see a fun crossover movie working, as long as you’re willing to suspend your disbelief a bit.

I think foundation is very important here because while Marvel builded up and designed as an interconnective universe, Nintendo's games were made to be self contain. Not even the individual games from the same series are connected. The Zelda timeline was forced in and few games have a bigger story, like F-zero and Splatoon. Fire Emblem is vast but each game is so far apart time wise that it doesn't really matter that much. This style of canon is just as good as an idea as a cinematic universe because the ultimate strength of separate canons is that you don't have to follow the story and experiment on new lore and mechanics, not worrying about past entrances. I think the Super Mario Movie benefits from that it didn't seem odd because it wasn't canon to the games so it could better express itself as a movie.

I think you misunderstand the shared rights between Marvel, Sony, and Universal. This is not similar to Nintendo. When Marvel nearly went bankrupt in the 90s, Marvel sold the X-men and the Fantastic Four to Fox, all versions of Spiderman and his villains to Sony, and Hulk and some others to Universal. This is what causes legal problems for Marvel when they want to adapt these characters in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Nintendo does not have these problems, for they have retained all the rights to their characters as far as I am aware. Nintendo can license different studios to make their Cinematic Universe while retaining the rights to their characters. Like how Sony has a deal with Marvel to allow Spiderman to appear MCU while retaining the rights to Spiderman. Furthermore, Nintendo just bought itself a movie company (Dynamo Pictures, which has now been renamed to Nintendo Pictures). This could mean that future Nintendo movies will be made directly by Nintendo themselves. They probably had the Super Mario movie made by Illumination to free themselves of the risk that comes with making movies, especially video game movies that have traditionally not done well. Now that the Super Mario movie is on track to make over a billion dollars, there appears to no longer be a risk. This means that your fear of shared rights is not a concern.

Mario has an incredibly unique world that doesnt really compete with any type of movie that is made. Almost all of the other nintendo IPs that are popular enough to get their own movie would have a "Warcraft" problem, where they are competing in a massive arena with similar movies with similar worlds. LoZ is competing with fantasy adventure titles, which is oversaturated. Metroid competes with action sci fi. Fire Emblem would compete with medieval political dramas like Game of Thrones. Even if they would be good movies in these genres I doubt Nintendo's extremely conservative leadership is going to risk their IPs on projects that arent 100% surefire investments.

I can give some folks who want an Nintendo CU two solid reasons why it isn’t a good idea, because it’s more than just “not knowing how to make it work.” 1. Many of Nintendo’s big hitters have enough material to stand as their own cinematic universes. Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and even Star Fox can stand on their own without needing to cross over. Mario has plenty of stories and side franchises like Luigi’s Mansion, Donkey Kong Country, Wario Land, and the Mario RPG games. Zelda and Fire Emblem have massive timelines taking place across multiple eras and different heroes and villains and lore that reside in those eras. 2. Many franchises have tried and failed to do cinematic universes. Universal Monsters? Failed with its first film The Mummy. Spider-Man? Failed the first time and is still desperately trying. Valiant comics (yes there was an attempt to do that)? Failed with their first film Bloodshot. DC? I think you know the answer. Godzilla/Monsterverse is really the only one that’s somewhat successful but there’s hardly any real consistent push from it that not many will really talk about it to the extent of Marvel. How about instead of a massive cinematic universe leading to Smash bros crossover. How about an alternative? Maybe a Smash Bros animated short? It can last 5-10 minutes and have the characters duking it out before master hand shows up and they all team up to fight him. The short can even end with the reveal of a kid playing with toys the entire time.

Just watched the video and good points were made but I disagree. First off, I don't think anybody thinks if it happens they should be in the same world cause people instead believe it should be a multiverse, like you mentioned. But while it was mentioned Marvel is struggling with their multiverse storytelling, I disagree as probably the best film and tv show this far from Phase 4 of marvel are No Way Home and Loki, two multiverse based projects whereas more grounded projects like Falcon and Winter Soldier and Eternals have seen less success. You can mention Doctor Strange 2 or Antman 3, but Doctor Strange had very misleading marketing for the scope of multiverse exploration and Antman wasn't even a multiverse movie until a post credit scene. Considering No Way Home was the film to break the $1 billion mark in the covid era and people criticized the film for story while saying it was still a ton of fun, all we need for these crossovers is fun. These are rated-PG movies for the most part where people just want to have fun watching them like they did with Suoer Mario Bros Movie, so I do think it would work as a multiverse, especially since they even teased it with Peach saying she doesn't know where her actual home is. For the other point of Illuminatiin shouldn't run every project, I 100% agree which is why you have Dreamworks working next door to you that can do the more mature projects like Zelda and like Metroid. And whether you like it or not, even if it is a good idea or not (which it isn't, seeing how this Mario and Peach already don't fit expectations, and paying SO MUCH money to "A-listers" to reprise their unnecessary roles).. Illumination is probably going to move forward with it, seeing as how Nintendo has also invested in the Universal Theme Parks.

Funny thing about the politics discussion with the Mario movie _I_ see is that conservatives mostly give it a tepid thumbs up and call it a step in the right direction because while Mario gets humiliated a couple of times, he's clearly the hero. I mean it'd have been way cooler and more daring if Peach _was_ an unironic damsel in distress who needed to be rescued by a couple of men, but her being a badass action girl is fine since she wasn't like smug or self-aggrandizing, but just genuine and still feminine at her core.

You guys lack creativity. They don’t have to have a shared universe to be a smash film.. obviously each Nintendo character has its own tone in terms of story telling, but it’s not really a valid reason for why it wouldn’t work. avengers and other films are great examples on how it could happen. Just because marvel sucks at introducing multiverse (other then no way home in my opinion) but that don’t mean EVERY studio would. Each character’s story had a different tone before eventually coming together to fight Loki. master hand could literally just make the smash world and the original smash line up, make some plot about the master hand wanting to test them in a tournament, Mario and the gang participate, see the bigger picture then join together to take down master hand. They go back to their own worlds, crazy hand would be the set up for the sequel, the end🙂

the fact you think Illumination had any huge part in the script....shows you dont know what's going on. Nintendo CEO scrapped the script and made their own. So illumination is really only there to bring out the bright colors and animation....Nintendo CEO will take good care of the script. So bring on more!

None of that is even remotely true. "Nintendo CEO" lol ok
@flyingtigerman
@flyingtigerman Год назад
@@doggifu For your information, Miyamoto, the Original creator of Mario, was co-producer on the Mario Movie. Nintendo would indeed have some control over what was being done with the movie. I am sure that illumination would have had some role in the script, but to say that it was solely Illumination is not true. I am sure Nintendo did not want any chance of a repeat of the disaster of the 1993 Super Mario Movie, in which they had no part in.
@doggifu
@doggifu Год назад
@@flyingtigerman I am fully aware of all of this. That isn't what he said. He made up a story about an unnamed "Nintendo CEO" tearing up Illumination's script and writing his own, all of which is, again, a story completely from this dude's imagination alone. And regardless of how much any member of Nintendo did and didn't have in the movie, that doesn't mean Illumination is suddenly a good fit for god damn Metroid.
@flyingtigerman
@flyingtigerman Год назад
@@doggifu I completely agree. However, considering that Nintendo just bought itself a movie company (Dynamo Pictures, which has now been renamed to Nintendo Pictures), future Nintendo movies will probably be made directly by Nintendo themselves and not Illumination. They probably had the Super Mario movie made by Illumination to free themselves of the risk that comes with making movies, especially video game movies that have traditionally not done well and that the 1993 Mario movie was a complete failure. Now that the Super Mario movie is on track to make over a billion dollars, there appears to no longer be a risk.
