The early 2000s and late 1990s having those catalog designs still make them incredibly like futuristic and makes me feel like there’s a vastness of the unknown just by looking at them
52:54 don't be fooled, _BOKTAI_ there in the bottom-right is a Kojima game, and a wild one at that. The cartridge has a solar sensor in it, and you have to go outside in the sun to recharge/refill your main weapon. I've never played it myself but I've heard it's a surprisingly good game, and I think if you emulate it people have figured out workarounds for the solar issue. Just a wild concept and this was Kojima doing his Kojima thing in between MGS 2 & 3
It's a pretty good game! The series as a whole is pretty solid. If you're emulating them, most emulators nowadays have a function to adjust the Solar Sensor built in, but you can also opt to use Prof 9's Solar Sensor patches instead which adds that functionality to the games themselves. They also had a lot of crossover content with the Mega Man Battle Network series (and Star Force 1). The series has a pretty great fan made sequel in the works called Kura 5 that manages to keep the feel of the Solar Sensor by connecting to the internet and using weather forecast data from your location and reflecting it back in game. I'd definitely recommend checking the series out if it sounds interesting.
I remember that Summer. I was 9. I got Wario World and one of those half purple half clear controllers from K-Mart lmao one of those memories and eras I remember like yesterday. Thanks for the video, Scott!
It’s amazing just how much the Gamecube/GBA connectivity mirrors the Wii/3DS connectivity. The way the marketed it, the sales, the features, the lack of support…
41:41 I consider Wallice and Grommit to be one of my favorite movies as a kid. I have no idea how I got them, but I saw all of the movies and shorts. Maybe they were just more prevalent in Pennsylvania than Ohio..
i grew up watching them because my grandparents had the shorts on vhs if i had known there was a gamecube game i would have played the shit out of them
God back in the day I would have my e reader on the gameboy player, scan the cards and then have the link cable plugged into my GBA to transfer the data over, with "Scan Dot Code" playing on the TV. It's interesting that they don't cover that scenario, because what kid always had two GBA's at their disposal. It might be because the e-reader awkwardly plugged into the Gamecube, though I found a page on their site that explains how to use the e-reader in this setup. What a bizarre product. I remember I wanted to trade it into Gamestop back in the day and they offered me a DIME for it lol so I just kept it. Its weirdness is lovable in a certain way.
MK Tournament Edition is a port of the 3D game MK Deadly Alliance from the PS2/GC/Xbox. It has characters that aren't in the console game and elaborates on their stories. There was a sequel, just called Deadly Alliance, which pretty much did the same thing but with different characters.
I bought a used clear back indigo gamecube controller from game crazy like 20 years ago and always assumed it was a well made knockoff controller because I had never heard or seen any before or since. Thank you for enlightening me.
For me, this is the height of the the GCN/GBA. This is one of the only catalogs that I still own to this day. Hugely nostalgic for me. I grabbed one of these book while I was out on our mall trip from summer camp. My friends and I would find the cheapest food we could and use the rest of our money to buy whatever we could from GameStop. I can't tell you how many times I must have browsed this booklet.
Thank you for doing these videos, I've never seen these pamphlets or books before and I can EASILY listen to you talk about them for an hour. I learn a lot listening to you ramble lol
One thing I remember about reading that catalog was that Starfox was described to be a 4 player co-op experience but it seems like they scrapped that. The 4 player battles were pretty sweet though even if the maps were more than a bit large most of the time
I forgot all about this thing. I don't remember how I got it, but I would spend hours pouring over each page even though I didn't have a Gamecube and wouldn't get one until I was in my mid 20s.
When I was a kid I remember getting Billy Hatcher and The Giant Egg for Christmas me and my brother played that game so much we loved it had an awesome story an the Co-op multiplayer was interesting
Starfox Assault, Kirby Air Ride, and Mario Kart Double Dash are the top 3 games I enjoy playing with my cousins. Wish I did more game nights with them because of these games. They're really too fun to play.
I Only Have Some Blooper Requests For You Scott: You’re Not An RPG Guy: A Scott The Woz Christmas Memory Cards (Halloween Special In 2020) Anime Games (Season 4; Episode 151) The Trial (Season 4; Episode 181) The Funeral (Episode 228)
I know EXACTLY what he is talking about with that Jimmy Neutron vs. Jimmy Negatron PC game demo. We got a CD ROM with 3 Nickelodeon game demos on it that came in the package of a Puffs Tissues 3 pack for back to school shopping back in 2004 I believe
I don't remember ever seeing a "jett black" SP, per se. I had one that was black metallic though, one of the original AGS-001 models with the dimmer screen, so they might've launched side-by-side with the metallic silver ones.
Pokemon Colosseum was the game that made me want a Gamecube and from that point on I was full blown Nintendo fan, just think about how much money they've got out of me because of that one game, mental.
Well to be fair, with Battle Network 3 starting the 'two version' cycle, it wasn't the intention; 3 came out as a single game in Japan first, and later got an enhanced version with the subtitle Black; adding in new chips/battles/forms to set it apart from the original release to give it its own appeal, but mainly it was done to create a version of the game that lacked hardly any game-breaking bugs. Then when it came time to bring the game stateside, they pretty much had to bring them over in a pair; with the bugfixes being in both versions if I recall correctly. I'd say the two games cycle TRULY started with the 4th game; they went all in with that shit.
I noticed you passed over Metal Arms: Glitch in the System on one of the 'worst' pages in the gamecube section of the catalog, but thats a seriously amazing game! Absolutely recommend, I think it still holds up pretty well in 2022.
Treasure developed WarioWorld, honestly when Kirby forgotten land was announced I thought they co-developed it as well. Not just because of the similar layout, but the new character designs had a very Treasure feel to them.
Love seeing this kinda stuff Also If you play Sonic Adventure 1 do it on Dreamcast, the gamecube ones and beyond are very glitchy, like you can fall through more roads than is comfortabley funny.
Hey scott I dont know if youll get this but I believe I played piglets big game as a kid and it was actually a pretty whacky strange game that stood on its own it was like a stealth game where you go into the different winnie the pooh characters heads and avoided monsters trying to navigate through a level and it was actually a pretty solid experience I believe there was collectibles and a hub world too so I reccomend taking a look at it if nothing else youll at least find it unique and creative
Mortal Kombat Tournament isn’t a port of MK3. It’s its own title on the game boy advance, and released following the story and kind of be a dual release with Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance on home consoles. This game is not very beloved but is very graphically impressive for gba
I remember this so well. I collected all of these as a kid. I would study the shit out of them for hours. Sad that I threw em away along with my GBA to Gamecube Cables, GBC and GBA console and game boxes.
I love my GameCube I bought it day one and I still play a few of my favs now and then, it's still on the shelf under my TV, other systems have come and gone from that spot, but my GameCube is still sitting comfortably in it's spot👍
This was certainly a very unexpected yet pleasant trip down memory lane. Cool video. EDIT: Scott, I saw that "free! take one!" on the front of the catalogue. Where did you pick this up?
Yo kai watch only did the dual releases for 2 games, The second one and the blasters spin off, Yokai Watch one and 3 were released as 1 game in America. The American Yokai watch 3 was 3 games in one because the Japanese version was 3 games
To whom it may concern: There IS a very good reason for why pokemon cards didn't function as amiibo. For the cards to be compatible with the e reader, all they have to do is print the barcode on it. For pokemon cards to be functional as amiibo they need a chip inside them. This would make the cards bulkier, and also way more expensive. A pack of pokemon cards is $4 for about 10 cards. A pack of animal crossing amiibo cards is $5 for 5 cards. This would make collectors very annoyed, to say the least. Making pokemon cards function as amiibo isnt as easy or as much of a no-brainer as scott makes it sound like. Edit: grammar
It’s crazy that the games they show on the catalog never came to the states or never got ported to the cube mainly spy hunter 2 since it never came to the GameCube
I remember this catalog vividly man what a great time my fav era in gaming this is how we figured out what games were coming and what we wanted having the GameCube an gameboy sp as we called it lol was a dream man 😇☺️
