I'll address a couple of issues brought up. First of all, here's my agenda. This video is not meant for obese people. From their perspective, even if genes have a role in obesity, so what? Their plan of action is still the same: to try their best to lose weight. This video is only meant for the non-obese people who view obese people as being weak willed. I highlight the discrepancy between how we view those with mental illness to those with obesity in the hope that perhaps we could be more sympathetic towards the struggles of obesity. Secondly, the studies that I've mentioned definitely aren't perfect but the fact that all these different studies, with different methodologies all come to the same conclusion strongly suggest that there are large effects of genetics. And lastly, there's another argument that obesity must be largely due to environment because look at how fast obesity is rising. Surely genetics can't change fast enough to account for this rapid rise. Well, an alternative explanation is that people already had these hidden underlying genetic vulnerabilities. Then when the food industry started pumping out more sugar/fat/unhealthy product, the effect of genes were no longer hidden. For example, the Pima Indian tribe have developed some of the highest levels of obesity. Why? Possibly because living in the harsh desert meant that Indians with genes that helped store fat were the most likely to survive. Due to this genetic predisposition, once they were exposed to unhealthy diet in America, they quickly gained weight. Hope that clears some things up.

So you want us to feel sorry for obese people or something? We already know some gain easier than others and there's already a body positive movement that could potentially send the wrong message (that being fat/obese is ok). We can acknowledge the science without encouraging people to just lay down and rot. Brb no point in putting in any effort becuz ma jeens

+Bite Size Psych For sure genetic plays important role in it, but also environment. cross country, culture, education, value system, real different environment. But I think your video is very interesting, I haven't use my brain on other youtube videos since a while. that means you're doing something good here. and just forget about some primitive comments. to discriminate is actually a part of human instinct, not a very good part in this case.

For one, genetics don't just controls the results of our attempts at diets alone - it controls us in general on various levels - even our mental states and 'free will'. Some can subscribe to nonstop exercise and reap more profits easier thanks to a greater pre-programmed degree of will and placebo effect. We might all have similar genetics on the species scale per se - but different people will be predisposed to process different things in different fashions. Some might have better metabolism and can drain fat faster even if eating habits are worse to balance it out - others could be more prone to store more fat because of the geographic location of their ancestors. It's important to note that genetic differences CAN emerge 'fast' pe se - especially if one takes into account how many more people there are, how many more people give successful births and how many more people survive to pass down potentially subpar genes. I mean - just breeding a bunch of mice in different environments for a couple decades can grant strains with considerable genetic and therefore observable differences. B6 research strain mice are prone to anger and, IIRC, skin lesions, while BALB/C are prone to allergies due to too much eosinophils but it didn't take us literal eons to create them.

The vid never claimed that obesity is entirely genetic. Rather, genetic vulnerability plays a substantial role in who gets fat first.

Slight problem with that study. Epigenetics is also a factor and the environment dictates a lot of how genes are expressed. This is why many scientists are a bit skeptical about twin studies. And its especially true with nutrition as there are many documented cases of epiginetic adaptations that impact how we deal with fat and energy intake/use.

+Serah Wint Epigenetics deal with how your DNA is expressed and for twins if they have identical DNA then there wouldn't be a difference in expression that is driven by DNA independently. Like you said environment is also a factor, but twins usually grow up together in the same environments and researchers would have controlled for that anyway.
@angelic8632002
@angelic8632002 8 лет назад
Kyzan Hyuri I guess that's true. But how would you control for that factor? You would have to have identical twins growing up separately or something like that, otherwise they have the same environment and then you don't know if its the environment or the actual genes doing it. maybe I don't think about this right but it seems to me like that would make it really hard to reliably study something like this-
@kyzanhyuri5356

Serah Wint They've done separated twin studies for other traits so I'm sure they can for this. Anyway the path to success requires the mindset to want to improve yourself, even if your genes put you at a disadvantage. If people just accept that it's genetics and resign then they'll never improve.

+Bite Size Psych Of course genetics has a role. It can make it easier, or it can make it harder. For me, it makes it hard, I can gain 2 kg a day if I give in to certain lifestyle. It takes a month to lose those same 2 kg. I have to work twice as hard, and I accept it. I don't lay on the couch and stuff my face with junk feeling sorry for myself. The fact that these studies are not mentioned often is great, because their conclusions remove responsibility. And additional removal of responsibility is the last thing obese people need.

Here are my issues with this video. 1. This channel loves to analyse statistics and show errors in assumptions. Well here's a flaw in your twin experiment. All identical twins are the same sex, but only half of fraternal twins share gender. Different sex means different anatomy, metabolism and habits. However, I haven't checked the source of the experiment, so maybe this channel decided to omit the information. Still, I have other arguments. 2. Why are these obesity exclusive to humans? I've never heard of an obese chimp or horse living in its natural environment. 3. The recent surge in obesity in the last decade, is much more likely related to a rapid change in 20th/21st century habits than to a massive "update" in our genetic material. 4. Obesity is often more prominent in certain parts of the world. Does this mean that this genetic "diversity" leading to obesity only exists in certain countries and not in others? All in all this video had weak arguments and evidence. This is not to say that conditions leading to obesity don't exist, just that I don't believe they are present in 35% of Americans, but just 9% of Italians. And just by the way. I was obese as a 10 year old and became thin within 3 years after moving counties (without any diet / additional exercise).

1: Yes, but that doesn't mean much since there's a 55/45 split of gender in the twin couples of the study that indirectly accounts for gender. It's not like all twin couples were one gender. 2: Because we're not living in our natural habitat in any conceivable way. No one biologically profits from the unnatural climate. It's all about receptiveness though. Some people are worse off and others get by easily. That's a big part of the study's scope. 3: You're 100% correct. As previously stated though, it's largely about how the genetic material of certain heritages cope with this new unnatural way of living. 4: Yes, partly because of racial differences. Another explanation might be that some cultures live more naturally and thus the body need not adapt and the study becomes more or less redundant. It's important to be critical. Thanks for your comment.

While I never use "genetics" as a reason or excuse to be overweight, I know it's a huge factor for it. There was a time recently, for about a year straight, I was on a strict diet (1200-1400 cal) intense exercise 4-5 times a week (2 hours daily). After about 6 months I lost 40 pounds. The remaining 6 months I lost pretty much nothing, even though I had another 40 to lose. Should I have really cut calories even more? 800 daily? Maybe eating nothing? So after another 6 months of the same shit without progress I gave up and gained everything back in the span of 2 months. It's not even that I went crazy with eating, and still did moderate exercise, but apparently my body adapted to run on 1200-1400 calories while still doing 10 hours of exercise weekly. And when I started eating an average 2000-2500 and only exercising 3 hours weekly, it became too much. I was told it would get easier, that I would get use to the regimen, but every single day I woke up I dreaded going to the gym, and hated I couldn't eat what I wanted. So yes, it's possible to lose weight even under those circumstances, but to practically ruin your entire life for it is questionable. I will never give up though, because I hate being uncomfortable in public and feeling judged for my weight. It's a bad hand I was dealt, especially seeing my 5,8 gf eating more than my 6,4 self and remaining thin. Anyway, if someone did happen to read this shit, thanks.

don trump Nice reply from someone who didn't even read the comment. Also, it should be obvious that 2000 calories was for the day, not a meal. Regardless, any lifestyle for a person of my height, weight, age, and gender (even without exercise) should, by doctors standards, lose weight on a 1200-1400 cal a day diet. According to science, an average person of my size burns over 2.4K cal doing absolutely nothing, just basic human functions. I'll stop there since it's pretty obvious you don't actually give a shit :D

Where I live, everyone accept that people are born genetically different. Yet there's not that many overweight people here, despite the lack of pressure. When you judge people's fitness on whether they train enough/eat healthily instead of how they look, you can really see the difference between those who lack the effort and those who just have terrible genetics.

If you only cut 20-40% of your maintenance caloric intake (depending on your bodyfat %, if you are fairly slim, you shouldn´t cut more than 25%, or you may also lose muscle mass), it will have no negative impact on your health whatsoever, on the contrary, if you have excess bodyfat, especially around the waistline, it will greatly reduce your risks of coronary diseases in the long run, not to mention make you look better, remove some unwanted weight from your knees, make you more functional in mostly every way and more. Your fat reserves literally only exist so your body can burn them when you don´t have enough food, they are energy reserves, and they don´t need to exceed around 6-8% for men, and around 15% for women in order for you to be perfectly healthy and have adequate hormonal levels. The only alternative is either working out very often and quite long for not so impressive fat loss results (which will do exactly the same thing anyway - burn your fat), or keep putting on more fat as you get older, never cutting back. Good luck with that.

Of course some people have a stronger predisposition for retaining fat, but the obesity distribution between countries (e.g. compare obesity in America with Japan) clearly shows how life style and cultural/environmental factors have a far stronger effect. Therefore (almost) everyone who can make the life style change IS able to beat their genetic predisposition. Some may have a harder time with this, but it is never an excuse for not being able to do it.

I'll try to explain the confusion. The study cited in the video about genetics being the main factor of obesity is right. The part about genetics affecting metabolism which in turns affects obesity implying metabolism is the main factor of obesity is wrong. You can think of obesity as the result of the mental disease of stuffing yourself. The cause of this stuffing yourself mental disease being a result of genetics explains why the study is right and concur with field observation that what comes in determines how big you get.

The study doesn't seem to take into account what the twins ate as children, which largely affects gut microbiome. If you had identical twins and put one on a good diet and one on a bad diet from birth, then switch diets in adulthood, the one with the bad diet from birth is going to have a harder time losing weight than the good diet from birth has gaining it. There's nature AND nurture here at play

So here's the video summed up. Genetics do have a major impact on health and the effects of diets. Doesn't mean that genetics can be used as an excuse. Genetics can show us why someone is the way they are and why they may have a harder time changing on various levels. Genetics doesn't show us that changing in general is impossible. It's just harder or easier - physiologically and mentally - for different people. (If one is not a supporter of determinism of course.) The problem with this whole debate is elitism and the lack of understanding of the cascading and interacting effects of genetics and the environment (dependent on the past states of particles and the universal laws that govern their interactions). People are so focused on upping their own egos and boasting about what they personally could do or think they could do that they fail to realize or actively ignore how powerful genetics paired with specific environments truly are - not just to bodies - but minds as well. We forget that, whether we like to believe it or not, free will... isn't. Unless souls get proven to exist - we're, in all likelihood, just biological machines. People can whine about other people's personalities and takes on the issue - but ranting won't generate change unless it's been preordained via the universal laws and present particles to do so from the start. People can whine about other people's take on this - but it's not going to change their take unless the right particles have been set in motion and place in the right place from the start to facilitate that from the beginning. No - this video doesn't provide people with an excuse. It provides them an explanation. What people choose to do based on the information is still on them. (Unless one supports determinism like myself in which case what people choose to do with the knowledge they've received is basically dependent on the current state of all the relevant particles throughout existence and the laws of the universe that govern their interactions).

+MassiveDestructionSP I have one. it's left to be proven (and we could argue that it is) #1 when we eat sugars (all types of carbs except fiber), our body cannot store it. That's when insulin levels rise, so that we can use that sugar. The body turns it into glycogen (sugar + water) and stores it in the liver until you need it. Some of it you use right away of course. If the body didn't do that, you'd die. That's basically type 2 diabetes: bad insulin response, sugar levels in blood gets too high. This is basically sugar storing (and fat storing) mode. Only slow activites allow you to burn fat, if you run or do something big, you'll be using the sugar you ate. Here's what happens if you don't eat for days: No sugar is left in your body, so your body starts using bodyfat. Since insulin levels are super low, you're not storing anything (here it is obvious, you don't even have food inside) If you eat once a day (but all the food you need) you'd be burning fat all day and store up only once. This is called intermittent fasting and it's be proven to have great health benefits, one of them is reducing insulin resistance. Not what if you don't eat sugar, only protein and fat? Your body is already in fat burning mode. You are not gonna store the fat, or at least very little of it. Insulin isn't there but food is, but without insulin levels rising, your body doesn't store anything it doesn't need. In fact, the more fat you eat the faster you lose weight in that diet (I have the source - it does not work if you eat sugar at the same time) So what recently changed? "Oh nooooo! The fat we've been eating for centuries is BAAD! Let's come up with that weird sugar thing that we only find in tiny, tiny, tiny quantities in food directly from nature, and make our WHOLE diet be made *mainly* of it!" (note: with diets of slow sugar they've been able to have success at reversing partially or completely insulin resistance - depending on how quickly the sugar is processed in the body, insulin levels don't rise as much. Plus, potatos for example, fill you the fuck up. So all sugars aren't equal although they are sugar.) I didn't post sources yet because RU-vid keeps deleting my comments

In the diagram about twins and their weight loss you can see, genetics play a big role on the efficiency of a diet or exercise, I think everybody thought that before. But it's not like it would be impossible for some people to lose weight, as the smallest loss was 6 kg, the greatest ~12 kg and the majority somewhere around the middle. So neither only your genetics, neither only your disciplin decides whether you're overweighted or not, it's as always the middle way.
@spliter88
@spliter88 8 лет назад
+Marc Päpper Think of it this way: some people, to achieve the same look, have to work twice as hard. So while technically it is just a question of practicing enough and having enough discipline, in practice we all work 8 hours a day, and have the same amount of free time, so after while you just say "fuck this shit". It's like earning half the salary for doing the same job.

People have become more sedentary over the past half century for a number of reasons and the average caloric intake hasn't decreased. That's the reason for obesity. The obesity epidemic is an entirely recent phenomenon, therefore the genetic argument cannot be true; the only way it could be is if there had been an enormous population explosion of fat super-breeders over the past generation, which there hasn't been.

I'm sure that genetics do play a role - although minor - but I think the message people are recieveing from this is "I am like this because of my genes, so there's nothing I can do about it". I know that is not the intent of the vid, but i believe that's how someone with weight issues whould percieve it, and I think it's damaging. It's like saying that it's your fate to be fat... You also have to realize that most obese people are obese because of lifestye choices. Choices that THEY make themselves. You can't blame your genes that you're eating more calories than you expend and you can't blame your genes that you're not moving enough. You might be able to blame your genes that you are more prone to store fat, but that doesn't mean that you have to be fat. Just as someone prone to alcohol addiction doesn'nt need to be an alcoholic.
@MeadeSkeltonMusic

What it means is that it could be twice as harder to maintain even a relatively healthy weight for people with this. In order to be healthy one would have to dedicate every fraction of their lives to how much they weigh. Imagine how hard it is for the average person to do this, let alone someone with genes prone to obesity.
@gabbes
@gabbes 8 лет назад
I hear you. I'm sure there are people with this sort of disorder, but I'm convinced that this is a very small minority, and that people are using this disorder as an excuse for themselves, even if it does'nt apply to them. Most people who are obese are so for logical reasons - energy in / energy out. You're body can't create fat unless it has a surplus of energy, and most obese people DO consume a surplus of energy - with a perfectly normal metabolism.
@MeadeSkeltonMusic
@MeadeSkeltonMusic 8 лет назад
Gabriel Ståhl And I agree. I get so frustrated when I see obese people gulping down diet cokes, eating potato chips and fast food and then sitting around with walking canes. Most of them not even 50 years old. People look at these people and think that is how all of us are. I am not one of those people. i try very hard to be active and eat right. I will admit that I do slip up every now and then. For example Christmas and my brithday- I want to have cake and ice cream. Normal people wouldn't gain much weight from that. But I usually put on an extra 10-15 lbs over the holidays and my birthday. I know that many people who are obese make poor food choices - and I would say that is true. But there are a fragment of us who really are fighting to get healthy and we aren't lazy .
@gabbes
@gabbes 8 лет назад
Meade Music You'll have to forgive me for not believing you. I'm not calling you a liar, and I'm not saying that you're not struggling... But pretty much everyone who's struggling with their weight claims that thay are at an unfair disadvantage, and I just don't buy it. To give an example from a documentary: A woman claims that she is gaining weight even though she is eating healthy, and trying to be active. She is closely monitered for a few days to see if what she says is true. The conclusion... Although she's eating healthy foods, she is still overconsuming, and therefore keeps gaining weight. Another example: Two female friends - one fat, one thing - they both claim that they eat similair amounts and have the same activity-level. They both persume that the fat woman has a slower metabolism... after a close inspection, the conclusion was that the fatter one of them ate quite a lot more, and that her metabolism was FASTER than that of the thinner one. People have very different ideas of what a "normal" food intake should look like. The only way to really find out ís to actually count your calories for a short period to get a better perception of your intake. Personaly I had problem gaining weight, and it wasn't untill I counted my calories that I realized that I wasn't even getting enough caloies to maintain my musclemass. I also realized how easy it is to overconsume calories by eating the wrong foods. We all know that Ice cream, soda, chips, cookies, candy and junkfood is BAD for us, but it's not untill you really count the calories and put them into your summary of calorie intake that you realize how easy it is to go waaaaaay past your requirements.
@MeadeSkeltonMusic
@MeadeSkeltonMusic 8 лет назад
Gabriel Ståhl That study is anecdotal. That is just one person. I know lots of women like her anyway. Unfortunately, they really are whiners and complainers who don't want to make the effort to lose weight. I am not one of those people. You assume that all obese people are gluttons who eat nothing but junk food. While I'm sure that is true in most cases, it isn't for all. There are lots of people who eat junk food and consume lots of calories who aren't fat. Granted, it usually catches up with them by the time they reach 40, but still- its very valid argument, that some people really must be vigilant about their diet to the point of obsessive just to maintain a weight that is considered moderately obese I count my calories like a hawk. I get exercise. Even with my chronic fatigue, I have to use caffeine so I can get through the day and stay moderately active. I am still overweight. I do admit yes- I eat junk food. But not on a regular basis. I rarely eat fast food- and I don't even have soft drinks . . I like to have a cookie every now and then because I actually like to live! Unfortunately for some people like myself, all it takes is just 1 extra cookie to gain 2 lbs in a week.

Genetics plays a very small role in weight gain. As for these studies. You have to take them with a grain of salt. Remember if these studies don't get the results they are looking for. They change the criteria and will disqualify people who are not meeting them or people who's results differs from what they want. I work in pharmacy and see these types of people almost every day. Crying that their fat and they can't lose weight no matter what they do! Of course when you ask them what they've tried to lose weight. They say everything, but dieting and exercising. Genetic can play a small part in your ability to partentially gain weight, but has nothing to do with you actually gaining weight. That has to do with other factors. Environment, health, disease and medications can cause some weight gain, but you gaining 100lb is the result of your actions not genetics! You can have a 99% chance of developing Cancer, but does this mean you will? No, because that 1% chance of you not exist.

Here's the thing. If it took 10 years to put the weight on. It's going to take almost the same amount of time to take it off. And no. there is not going to be any kind of magic drug that going to take you from 400lb to that of a supermodel and this is exactly what a lot of fat people are waiting for. If you need proof that dieting and exercising works! Just listen to some of the stories with Richard Simmons. Stop using genes as a cop-out. If your fat it's because 2 things. 1. Bad eating habits 2. The problem I find is that when people talk about obesity being genetic, it's usually from an angle of "... So don't even bother." THIS is flat out wrong. Being genetically predisposed to store fat does not doom you to a lifetime on the extremes of obesity. It's a factor, sure, and it's all a natural part of a survival mechanism. What's not natural is letting that mechanism go so far as to impede mobility. Waddling as an adult is *not* genetic. This is why people protest the mention of genetics in discussion of fitness and diet as related to obesity. Because it gets used as "proof" that all thin people are "anorexic" and "work out constantly." Honestly I tend to think that a genetic predisposition to *addiction* is more likely to lead to extreme obesity than is a tendency to store fat.

I think putting an emphasis on the fact that genetic differences dictate your appetite and and self control only make it easier for obese people to think that it can't be helped. Just start counting calories and stick to it. Make it a necessary evil in your life exactly because you have no self control. Let the calculator control your eating habits. It's that easy. Btw: Metabolism makes a very small difference between individuals, usually around 200-500 calories between individuals with similar body composition. Any more deviation and you're likely to be suffering from some form of hyper- or hypothyroidism.

Just had a pseudo-debate about this the other day. People just don't want to believe genetics is a major factor in people's body weight, metabolism, or ability to gain/lose fat. They desperately want to cling to their pre-conceived story that fat people are just lazy and have no self-control when it comes to eating. It's always "those people did something wrong, therefore they deserve what they got." Ironically, it's kind of the flip-side of "The American Way." It's the ideal that anyone can achieve the highest degree of success and prestige, as long as they earn it. On the other hand, if they don't achieve sufficient success, then it's their own damn fault that they have only themselves to blame. That way, we don't have to have empathy for other people. We don't have to acknowledge the cruelty of nature or that society is flawed. We can just live our shitty little lives, always plotting to usurp those above us while simultaneously sneering in disgust at those "beneath" us, patting ourselves on the backs for being better than them.
@Will-zc8tz
@Will-zc8tz 8 лет назад
A very pessimistic view. How does having empathy for fat people help them out? How does blaming genetics help them out? They can't change their genetics, but they can change how much crappy food they eat and how much exercise they do. Our ancestors didn't have obesity rates as high as we do now, and their genetic pool would have been very similar to ours.

It means you have to be that much more careful to avoid the behaviors that lead to it. Ditto here, even if obesity is an issue in your family, it just means it's that much more important that you take care of yourself. Just have to remember, nobody got dealt a perfect hand for genetics. You just work with what you have. Either way, it's still just "energy in - energy out." I believe that the psychological aspect of obesity should certainly be paid more attention to, but while there are differences in how people respond to exercise and diet, let's observe this simple scientific fact - If you forget psychology and biology and boil it down to physics, which is universally applicable, if the energy going in is exceeded by the energy going out of a system, energy must be coming from within the system. If this happens, the mass of the system is guaranteed to change. What I'm saying is regardless of your genetics, if you eat less energy (calories) than you spend, it's physically impossible for you to not lose weight over a significant time period.

I agree discrimination makes it harder. If people feel judged and disgusted when they go out for a run or go to the gym or eat a salad instead of a burger, or eat 1 burger instead of 2, regardless of what they do the judgement affects their mindset. They're less likely to do those actions, at least in the public eye, which means they are less likely to do them at all. Aside from that though, the anxiety, depression and frustration caused will promote impatience and ultimately failure. as well as avoidance which worsens already bad habits but worst of all these mental conflicts lower their abilities so that if they are able to eat less or run further they won't because they'll have spent so much energy feeling bad they'll either want to run away, bury themselves in comfort or simply not have the energy left for willpower. When it comes to weight the mentality seems to be extremely damaging, it's either all or nothing. You either aren't fat, can't be fat, and no matter how big you are it's you and you should own it, or you're a disgusting pig who doesn't deserve to live or work comfortably and should live life on a treadmill eating apples. This way of thinking is detrimental for the overweight individuals trying to fight genetics, but also for any overweight individual at all. Not only that, but it promotes eating disorders and being underweight which is actually MORE harmful than being the equivalent overweight. Fat serves a biological, survival purpose, however being too thin serves no purpose and our bodies know that. This all or nothing mentality also promotes the flight response from weight loss, which isn't the correct approach to this increasing health problem. Why do we need to think in an all or nothing sense? I don't think we should.Health has never been so black and white, so we shouldn't treat the unhealthy in a black and white manner.

45-85% is a big difference. A better study would have compared twins raised by different parents. Genetics in a twin study with twins raised in the same environment doesn't tell us much- as we are looking at nature alongside nurture.

Nice video. There's also significant research showing that microbiomes in our intestinal tract may have a lot to do with our body mass as well, if you're interested in checking out more on the issue. I do have a bit of an issue with the title, though: By definition, if something is a "fact", it CANNOT be wrong. A fact is by its very nature true and correct. A better title might have been: "Our thoughts about obesity are wrong" or "This fact about obesity may surprise you" or something like that. I don't mind that it's a bit "clickbaity", I just mind the semantics of calling a "fact" wrong. Thanks!

Are there any controls for the difference between genetics, epigenetics, and the environment people are raised in? I would imagine that people who are raised in a family that eats unhealthily will also grow up to eat unhealthily, and raise their children to do the same. Perhaps there is a conflation between the environment people grow up in and their genetics here.

Too many people in the comments and just in general are focusing on the -direct- effects of genetics. I.E metabolism and things like just a sense of appetite. But I'd argue that surely the mental/indirect side of it is the far larger side. Not everyone has the same will-power or dedication - some people feel very satisfied by eating when they're stressed/down, whereas for others it has little to no effect, hence they don't eat in those circumstances. And in stressful modern day work life, this can make a huge difference. Not to mention some people just don't have the brains for keeping to a strict routine - which is a huge part of losing weight, routinely exercising and routinely buying healthy food instead of unhealthy. You fall out of that habit and you buy a fast-food here... maybe a take out there... and suddenly the diet is completely gone and the diet is either forgotten or pushed aside 'temporarily'. Honestly, I do think the #1 issue with weight loss is trying to get people into the most motivated frame of mind to stick to a diet and exercising regularly. Which is bloody difficult, since everyone is motivated by different things.

You're overlooking so much info. What about the metabolism rate of each twin? If one overweight twin worked a lot on their feet and the other had a desk job, with both of them being lethargic on their off time. One of the twins would have a significantly higher metabolism than the other.
@boredfangerrude

Willpower is mental more than anything, you can of course control yourself with discipline but it really has more to do with how you were brought up and how you live than generics.
@wasd____
@wasd____ 7 лет назад
Actually, no, genetics are strongly correlated to personality characteristics and behavioral traits. If people really want to change and overcome obesity, most of them will probably need to take that into account rather than trying to rely on the simplistic perspective of "just be disciplined."
@boredfangerrude
@boredfangerrude 7 лет назад
Winston, genetics have SOME things to do with personality traits BUT they do not control your personality, you can ultimately dictate it through discipline and a strong desire to.
@wasd____
@wasd____ 7 лет назад
Boredfan Gerrude Nope, research says differently. Genetics is a very significant part of personality. Of course you have conscious choice over individual decisions, but a large part of who you are is not really conscious.
@boredfangerrude
@boredfangerrude 7 лет назад
I'm sorry I just can't agree. If that were really the case, people's personalities would be far more similar than they are since we can all trace our genetics back to the same ancestors, white, black or Asian. This is because ultimately, Humans are an inbred race as it's inevitable that even diverse genetics of a species would all meet up eventually in a new generation. But that isn't true, there are billions of different personalities, one for each person.
@wasd____
@wasd____ 7 лет назад
Boredfan Gerrude "If that were really the case, people's personalities would be far more similar than they are since we can all trace our genetics back to the same ancestors, white, black or Asian." That doesn't make sense because it's like saying that if skin color was genetic we would all be the same color, since we all come from the same ancestors. Clearly, skin color is genetic, and yet, clearly there's a lot of variation in that. "But that isn't true, there are billions of different personalities, one for each person." Of course everyone has their own individual personality. But there are also large generalized trends toward particular personality traits, and there's pretty strong evidence that they're heritable genetic characteristics.

Were these studies replicated in Africa and Asia? There are social factors common across the West that won't be filtered otherwise. Self-control is more emphasized in Japan and China whereas self-control is in many ways scoofed at in contemporary American culture. International twin studies would be interesting to look at (although I can understand why it would be difficult for scientists to do that as there aren't that many identical twins raised on different continents). Also while heritability is a factor in mental illness there are also other factors. There's also studies that show that emphasizing biology actually leads people to have less sympathy for the mentally ill than emphasizing problems people had growing up that contributed to the development of a mental illness. Emphasizing biology makes people feel like the mentally ill person is in some way less human, emphasizing something that happened to the person makes the mentally ill person more relatable.

Thank you so much for this video! Sorry people are fighting you so much on it. I never once heard you say "fat people should stay fat," but based on the comments you would think you had. I hope more research is done on the genetic components, and solutions are found to "level the playing field." Again, thank you.

Try blaming fastfood, netflix, and a society that prefers to take the easy way out by blaming someone or something else. Control the things you can control and don't worry about the ones you can't. Be someone who acts rather than sits back and passes the blame.

It's all about lifestyle: Eating habits and exercise. 10'000 years ago we had to run and walk around all day long hunting prey, chasing predators and migrating. Today we drive, or are driven to most locations and rarely get more than 1 hour of exercise. We're able to gorge on food where in the past only the strongest and most respected go the most food. And even more so all quick and easy snacks are cheap and terrible for you.

When you make weight loss the only goal of excersize and healthy eating it's REALLY discouraging to people who have trouble losing weight. Especially when they're surrounded by thin or average weighted people who eat like shit and never excersize.

Can we not alter our metabolism? Could obesity be a person with low metabolism brought on by poor diet from an early age? Today, I witness so many parents feeding their children the same junk food they eat and toddler ages and their toddler are obese as a result. I rarely see a fit child with obese parents. So their metabolism could have been damaged. Of course it's impossible to assume this is the only factor but it could be for a fair percentage.

Just because one identical twin is of a healthy weight and one is obese, does not mean it's not genetic. I've seen documentaries about this. The healthy twin may still have some of the Genes for obesity, it's just that they're not active. It's believed that the twin has had their genes for obesity activated via stress. Genetics isn't as simple as portrayed in the media. I may have the genes for diabeties, but may never get it because I work to take care of my body. Genetics is only part of the story. Environment also seems to play a role in how these genes are expressed. There's a cool movie that actually is based on this simplistic view of genetics. People's status in life is based purely on their genetic code. Some parents opt for genetic advancements (like prevention of major illnesses or advanced intelligence. Some opt for a natural birth and are treated like peasants, merely because they believe their "inferior" genes makes them inferior. A man with the gene for a heart defect challenges this system by stealing someone's identify and becoming one of the first people to visit Titan. It's called Gattica and I really liked the movie. I may be wrong, but it just seems that genetics isn't as simple as people think. You may have the genes for the disorder, but never contact it. Genes seem really to be more like probability than a sure prediction.

That's how it works! I knew there was some reason why high stress is correlated with obesity, and was under the impression that it was reasonably well studied, but I didn't remember exactly how it worked. Also, either males or females tend to eat more when stressed, right? Can't remember which way it goes though.

What I would like to see is someone do a twin study, but also compare their gut micribiomes... with the recent evidence that your gut bacteria are likely to affect your weight, how much of the similarity between twins is truly genetics or do they also have similar gut bacteria due to shared environment growing up... and can you explain the cases where the twins have less-similar outcomes by differences in their gut bacteria
