In January 2023, Ormskirk and District Family History Society (registered charity no. 1004895) began their programme of talks with a presentation designed to show how resources from the Society’s Digital Library, RU-vid videos and data collections can help family historians, local historians and others to gain an insight into the lives of people who lived in the ODFHS area in the past.
The evening was split into different sections, including a brand-new presentation by Alan (ODFHS Website Manager), which we are sharing with a wider audience on RU-vid.
In this segment, Alan gives a brief introduction to the Members’ Area of Ormskirk and District Family History Society’s website (including step-by-step screenshots), and how to use its search facility to find items that might be of interest to people researching specific surnames (or subjects).
Also featured are examples of some of the digitised material held in the Members’ Area, with explanations of how we have used optical character recognition (OCR) software to make the scanned versions of original documents easier to search, and considers the advantages and disadvantages of this method. Alan also demonstrates how to search the ODFHS Digital Library for specific surnames, using examples from his own family to show how he was able to find a reference to his grandfather’s death in a 1926 Oddfellows’ Magazine.
