They really will do anything. I talked to Eugene once about doing 2 matching knives for me and my at the time fiance, and asked about using superconductor. He came back and basically said they didn't like that material because it was more expensive than they thought it was worth, but if I was willing to pay for it they'd be more than happy. More than that, I asked if they could make matching rings to go with the knives, and they were even willing to accommodate that and make everything of the same materials if anyone had the abilities. They were willing to go way beyond what they usually do and not only use materials they weren't used to, but also make an object they weren't used to (again, assuming anyone in their shop was comfortable doing so). Fantastic company that I can't recommend enough.
Just received this as my birthday knife. Wharncliffe, locomotive breath color (dark grey), blue/purple collars and backspacer. It’s the most beautiful thing and I can’t believe how functional and ergonomic it is. This is now my favorite knife.
I agree about the customization being Olamics biggest and best trait! I wish there was more of this in the industry! It's sad to me how widespread this trend of "makers choice" lotteries only (with the occasional auction that goes crazy in price) has become in the high end CNC and custom knife markets. Don't get me wrong, I completely understand why they do it, it is easier, faster, less annoying, gives creative freedom and probably makes monetary sense to do it that way. But, it takes the fun out of purchasing what is being touted as a "custom" knife and makes them feel less special or unique once you have it, at least to me. It's just a shame it apparently has to be that way for so many makers recently.
That noise when they open and close! Phwoar!! That's a gorgeous sound. Olamic you seem like a bloody great company, please don't change. Lovely review Mr Shabazz
Great Job Nick. That’s a video I was interested to see coming from you being such a busker fan. I’ve been considering one of these for quite a while...
I just got my Olamic 247 Wayfarer back from a service. I requested that they replace the hardware with all matching screws and pocket clip ($40). They did everything perfectly and threw in their spa treatment (cleaning, sharpening, etc.) at no charge. I can't say enough about their products and service. I own over 80 blades and the 247 is one of my top 5.
Just got me a sheepsfoot whippersnapper per your recommendation, oh my god it is a gem. I can’t put it down, just so fun to flip and annoy the wife with, and what a great useful blade shape. I have a lot of nice knives, this one is absolutely top notch and just funky enough to stand out from the crowd. So good!! Much love sir, I always appreciate you and your videos. Thank you for all you do.
Nick, spot on review. I have been carrying mine for about a month now, and love it. I was using 10wt nano-oil but actually switched to blue lube. I love the action with the blue lube (probably the same action with KPL). Thank you sir.
Spot on review as always - Thanks! I chose the sheepsfoot as well and like that blade shape. Wish it was lighter with a little thinner blade stock but I do enjoy all the deployment options. Also, lots of little highlights like recessed annodized holes, etc. that give it a little pop. As you say, lots of options to explore with these.
Thanks for a solid review. I definitely want to own one of these. The MANY customization options can actually drive an OCD knife collector insane trying to finalize what choices to make! 😜
Wow those are nice and small. I was considering the flat-edge but now I like the tall grind and thumb hole of the belly version ... oh and the clip with the 'nice bulbous thing there'.
Oh my God! I fell in love. The Wharncliff one looks like straight out of my Head. I mean really, the colors, inlays... This is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I would sell my Soul for that Knife (Art?!?). But thanks to our amazingly stupid German laws, I would not be able to carry it outside. So... Goodbye my almost lover.
14/15 dentist recommend getting one. It’s kinda my new favorite knife and that’s saying something. It’s Marry Poppins, practically perfect in every way!
Their knives are really good looking, I like the amount of color they use. A lot of knives are just boring grey titanium with a spot of color on the pivot or the back spacer. Just kinda boring after the 100th model you've seen like that. These guys clearly aren't afraid to use color more freely. I also like the overall shape of their models. Haven't seen one yet that I thought was ugly. Seems like a good brand to me. Out of my price range tho.
Jacob Dawson did you read his comment? The Waypoint is the DEFINITION of boring grey titanium. Not really at all comparable beyond the commonality of them both being knives.
Hi Nick Which would you pick if you could only have a whippersnapper or a busker? I am in that exact dilemma. I also have smaller hands (size 8 glove or medium)
2 month update on my whippersnapper. It won’t come out of my pocket, it seems to be made of magical scratch resistant 6AL4V Ti, and the most magical heat treated 20cv. Strops back to perfect most of the time, and when it needs a little more, 20 swipes on 1200grit diamond stone plus strop and it’s better than new.
Am I correct to assume that Olamic is a knife handle maker? They import the blades and hardware, and customise/produce the handle. I have a Whippersnapper (sheeps foot) and it is one of my favourite knives. I have you to thank. 👍
If it was the top blade shape with the bottom scales on it that would have been a an absolutely stunning knife. Best thing is is with what you’re saying they can make it.
There's a gallery of some of the customized versions on their website. Some look super good, but unfortunately the price goes up rapidly for customization...but I guess that's fair. --- nevermind, you mentioned the same thing as a "bad"
Just got one, I would not hesitate to get one if I were you. Out of the box perfection!!! It’s silly good. Went with sheepsfoot, I find it slightly easier to sharpen than a wharncliff, and I think it looks a little better, but mostly cause it spreads soft cheese better (dead serious). Great size for just about everything, pairs nicely with an umnumzaan (cool blade shapes!), I really could go on and on about this little beast. It’s just that good👍
@@maxwellmortimermontoure7274 update I just bought one I’m waiting for it in the mail now I did go with the sheep’s foot with copper carbon fiber inlay I can’t wait to hold it
If I am a newcomer into the knife community, and the 4 knives I have bought are the QSP Parrot, Ganzo FH41, Rat 2(d2), and a $5 ozark trail knife, what should be the next knife I get? I want it to be a budget knife as well, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a knife in the same price range that is substantially different than what I have up to this point. I love variety :)
Out of box, the pivot screw would become loose and when it did that the blade would go way off center. Blue loctite didn’t solve the issue, so I had to use some plumbers tape. Other than that, a great knife.
I really want to like this knife but the pivot screw always coming loose drives me nuts. Eventually even with loctite it will eventually work it’s way loose.
Knives are really a personal decision. I would recommend visiting a shop and handle both to see which appeals to you. It does not matter which knives appeal to me, when you are looking for a knife for you.
Is the detent suppose to be this weak? Edit: yea I got it fixed. Traded it to leftyedc and got the bolster lock whippersnapper and it blows away the old whippersnappers!!!!!
A bit too wide in profile when closed for my taste. The twin tower pillars for the clip look like something a kid would build with a Meccano set. Blade to handle ratio is like a folding boxcutter. I generally love Olamic knives. Not this one though.
owning a 800+ bucks version of this knife as my holy grail knife, there is exactly one thing I hate about it: The marks on the finish when I dropped it on the stairs and it fell down 2 stories. #facepalm
20CV isn't horrible as a blade steel, so long as it is in the 62+ Rockwell range and all post heat treat/temper grinding/machining is done wet. Maxamet is the best blade steel, period.
Just got one, finally. I have witnessed the release of this piece at BladeShow and I liked the design and feel in the hand. But for a Chinese made piece, customized in US it is too expensive. It feels like a WE that some dude with skills just made it it’s own. And for someone like me (customizing most of my knives I collect) it doesn’t warrant the price. The blade is unnecessarily high when closed and the sharp edges of the lockbar cutout feel like a crass overlook for a US customized piece. Not for the knife connoisseur.
@David P. Buds gun shop, I have an m&p 45 that I paid $300 for. It was an office issued pistol. Came with trijicon night sights and 3 magazines. Mind you, my original post was 5 months ago. I also bought a m&p 9c for a little over $300. They used to have a ton of used pistols for dirt cheap, not to mention lifetime warranty. Times have changed..
