The Old Abandoned General Store from 1910 : (Time-Capsule - Everything Left Behind!) Part 1

Part 1 of 3
This old store dates from 1910 and the fittings are original. The store has had two generations of the same family running it, before it's closure some years ago. Now it's abandoned and left to rot. As always, we felt it our duty to document it, before it falls prey to the developer & his wrecking ball.
Part 1 features a look at the front of the shop through the windows, then we head around the back to look for a way in....detour for a peek in the creepy cellar, and when...oh well you'll see for yourself :)

*UPDATE:* 16.8.16 There's a sad piece of news regarding the old store, when we visited the town yesterday, we walked to the old store and saw that the right hand side window was cracked; and then to our shock & dismay, we noticed the glass had been replaced in the door - this means someone has either removed the old glass panel with the beautiful Gillette sticker....or someone smashed it. It left us with a heavy heart. Plus when we peered through the window, there appears to be water splashed around everywhere. We have discovered some wonderful additional material in regard to this old store. Here is the video showing what happened to all the wonderful nostalgic items from the store: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MKxJcDU2Y10.html&lc=UgwjgXvr6UurPK4KVnF4AaABAg

Someone probably saw you all there and decided to add their not so gentle touch to the place.

There is that depressing thought, that someone from the town saw my video - but I doubt they saw us while we were there...we're very discreet. The other more uplifting thought, is that the town's historical society has rescued it...hope!

Thanks for post! A cornucopia of history.. ... LOVE IT! From the hardware, trim, doors, windows, etc.,......that stuff is worth a fortune! We just paid $895.00 (& that was cheap!) for a time period, interior, solid core Douglas Fir door, to replace one in our 1855 Queen Anne. Fortunately, our sweet gal, has been consistently loved, cared for & maintained through time.

Its amazing how things like that cool coffee grinder was left behind. It would make a nice added addition to any kitchen nowadays even. People love antiques. This was nice video. Very nice structure. I love these ghost buildings. Abandoned building, history lingering and you can feel it.

Love these old buildings. Great tour. We were renovating part of our house in Michigan. We knew it was very old, and the county could only guess at 1920s. As we went in part of a wall, there were newspapers from 1902! We went in a few other walls and found papers from the building of the house's timeline? The insulation of newspapers was from 1902 thru 1912. The later papers were upstairs in what we had guessed was an add on. That certainly explained feeling that the house was not insulated. Lol. We left original fixtures, glass doorknobs, claw foot tubs, etc. We were always amazed what we would find in the rafters, walls, etc. We took the newspapers to the county and they wrote the house was built in 1903 on the paperwork. She was a beauty

I love all the various layers of eras - my eye picks out items from the 50's and 60's, of which I am very fond, other things from other time periods look like they could be from a parallel universe to my untrained eye! Sunday morning(well, almost noon in the east coast of the US), drinking my coffee and watching your new upload. Priceless!! I can imagine it in the 1910s, you would hear horse-drawn carriages, instead of cars and ambulances, police (couldn't figure out which one I heard in the background). The red coffee grinder was magnificent, so were the copper containers, the wine bottles. I wish I could have read what was written on the tiles in the kitchen, but I did notice "1943" in one of them. Can't wait for part 2. Great job as always!!

Thank you friend as always for stopping by and the great feedback! You like myself have imagined what it was like, I even stood behind the counter and picked up on the echoes. Yeah, the date of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (19 April, 1943). To the right of that is mention of the 40th anniversary of Germany's capitulation (Mi, 8 Mai, 1985, 40 Jahrestag - "Wednesday, 8th of May, 1985, 40 Anniversary"), and to the right of that is what appears to be the date 31st of March, 2005 (written below the Barlauch or "bear garlic"). Very strange stuff to be scribbled on a kitchen wall, eh? Some of it historical, some of it genealogical, but with some of it gastronomical. If this place is in Germany, it's someplace very near Switzerland, I'm guessing, because of some the items caught in view are related to Aargau canton (the thermal baths ad and the sugar cube box). ...And, the bicycle, "Friwa" 5:21 , is a brand associated with Aarau, the capital of Aargau canton, Switzerland. So, I think this place is in northern Switzerland, in canton Aargau.

MrJm323 Wow, I can't believe you were able to read the entire date, I just captured 1943. Good to hear from others as to what they noticed in the background, thank you for the info. Yes, it's strange, but interesting to us reading it today.

Once again another amazing video I have just subscribed today and can't stop watching. There is just something special about the way you do this. You manage to capture the atmosphere perfectly allowing us to imagine and ponder about who has been there, what kind of clothes they wore, what conversations they may have had and generally how they lived in those times. Keep up the excellent work you are doing a very important job keeping places such as these in the public eye before they disappear without trace. That Gillette sign if from the late 1930's. The inventor of that double edge razor got help from an Engineer to come up with the shaver unit for the blades. The depression forced a man to do odd jobs and went on the road to travel as a sales Person , but almost every man had a local Barber that knew how they like their Shave . The shavers Blade needed to be sharpens by the strop and wasn't the best way to do your own shaving while on the road when you would travel from town to town . It suddenly hit him that a shaver with a throw away blade could be used for the perfect shave and be safer if housed in a device to hold it so the only the edge sticks out. So he created the double edge razor blades in a pack of several new ones where the shaver could come apart for a small Kit with Shave cream and face cloth . Men could carry their barber in a box and shave when they needed to even on a train and Hotel room . This design came in handy during WW2 in the fields when men had to shave. The cream made it easier when there wasn't hot water . Today we have the multi Blade heads that click on to handle but they are so expensive for Blades the older throw-away plastic ones are coming back and can be mailed to people each month. Companies need to recycle the high priced blade heads to extract the blades to re-sharpen them in bulk to put back on the market in a New plastic holder unit . You can save 20-30 Heads to drop off at a recycling Box and this may keep the price down for buying refurbished Blades. I don't throw away my skates when they get dull.
@tjfreak
@tjfreak 7 лет назад
Did they have to take a home equity loan out to afford them back then too ?
@caomhan84
@caomhan84 7 лет назад
The Gillette sign is not from the 30's, it's from the mid-50's. The razor shown is a "flare-tip" Superspeed, introduced iin 1954, and the Blue Blade dispenser.
@caomhan84
@caomhan84 7 лет назад
And TJ Freak, to answer your funny question...actually no, you didn't need to shell out an arm and a leg for blades back then...and that was exactly why Gillette developed new razors. Any double-edged blade from any company could fit the old safety razor heads. Gillette figured out they were missing the boat on a huge profit opportunity...and in 1971 they created a razor that required proprietary blades. The rest is history. 2 blades became 3, became 4, 5....and perpetually more expensive. Thing is, they still make the old style safety razors and you can still buy cheap double-edge blades for them. Gillette would rather you not know that, however.

Thank you Ana, it's always a pleasure to have an appreciative audience and someone on a similar wavelength who can 'tune' into my videos. Thank you also for your thoughtful & kind words - indeed, not only do the explorations give me great pleasure, but I feel a strong need to capture what I know for sure will change...whether it be demolition or unsympathetic restoration. Thank you also for your very sweet comment that my videos were the best for you today! :) God bless & wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Probably not "human organs" in those jars, but nothing you'd want to eat, either ... the bicycle is a 1960's era, the headlite and brake lines are a dead give-away, unless they were added later. Great vid!

There is a special poignancy about how you present these pieces, which somehow transcends simply looking round an old house, and actually becomes an enquiry into the lives of the folk who lived and worked there...it doesn't seem to matter whether you put a musical backing in or not...I think it's that deliberately subdued presentation which conveys a certain stillness...I was going to ask some questions, but I see you've answered them already...so I'll say thanks as always...Dave
@ObsoleteOddity
@ObsoleteOddity 8 лет назад
Thank you Dave, you're very intuitive, I was just conveying to a friend who commented, that I get a sense of all the lives, all the different personalities that have left their imprint in the house...and the sense that they like me, were once present, going about their business, laughing, crying, loving....and then gone. I'm aware of that in every old building I enter - and so I have a great respect and a feeling of privilege being there. Thanks for your positive feedback Dave.

Thanks Kimberly as always for your kind feedback :) Often these old buildings bring back memories of either our grandparents or parents homes. I'm not sure at the moment if they're going to tear it down, but I imagine they will eventually. I'll keep checking from time to time. I'm drinking another cold beer now, lol CHEERS Kimberly!

Very interesting. Had this old gem been in the States, vandals would have destroyed everything and graffiti would abound. Thanks for the time machine visit. I have subscribed. Wish I was able to visit Europe but your videos make it possible to do so. Also your command of the camera is awesome! Really love your explorations! God bless!

Thank you so much for your kind feedback. I've been hearing that a lot from my US viewers, and it's a sad thing to hear; My hope is that with urban exploration videos becoming more & more popular, that youngsters start taking a different view on exploring old buildings...no more destruction & defacement....just documentation. But I also realise a lot of this destruction is done by thieves after the copper pipes, etc - it's a shame, but that's the world now. Take care, thanks for watching & God bless you too :)

What an interesting find! I can't wait until the other two videos are posted! The object that interested me in this video was the heater in the middle of the kitchen. It is a heater....right? I thought I noticed a pattern on the body of the heater. Am I right? The stove is interesting also! A great job on filming this!

Thanks Cherri - glad you enjoyed the first part of the tour! Stay tuned! :) Yes that's similar to a 'pot bellied' stove, except Swiss style with ceramic tiles on it.

You mean you weren't tempted to try 1950s pickled preserves? Man you even had a choice of 'water closets' in case they were a bit strong lol! Well, you've done it again - another gem to explore! I'm impressed that you even manage to find these places let alone get to venture inside. Fascinating video and thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the next part :) Kinda miss the incidental music though.
@ObsoleteOddity

I think my stomach would've been a pickled preserve if I'd partook of those 50's delights, lol I spotted this place purely by accident while just out for a drive. I'll still have music, but thought I'd try something different for this explore. Thanks for popping in!

lucky you! I'd love to explore an abandon asylum, morgue, or hotel... I love watching these type of abandon buildings videos.. my daughter sent me a picture of a very old abandoned police station, my first thought was, I would sit and look through all the files left behind.. Yes, I'm weird like that...😂😂😂

I wonder how it stood vacant for all the years. No taxes or land fees? It seems like the locals really respected the place and maybe knew the owners? What an intriguing mystery. I would love to have such experiences. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not sure how it works in Switzerland, but there's a lot of buildings that just stay empty for a long, long time....without vandalism either.
