Among the most essential menswear wardrobe basics are dress shirts. Of course, there are lots of details to consider. What type of collar style should you have? What type of cuff style should you have? If you're doing a made to measure dress shirt, these are decisions you have to make and I'll help you do just that in this video. And in addition to going over those particular styling details, I've also put together a lookbook of five different outfit ideas for some inspiration on what to wear my five essential dress shirts. Brian this video is sooooo well done and such a great topic especially for younger sartorialist that get so excited about all these off the wall shirt options! Back in 2013 I was getting more serious about menswear and I began selling menswear professionally and I bought a ridiculous amount of loud and unique looking shirts.....at one time I swear I had over 100 shirts no lie in just a spectrum of hues......I learned over the years that those shirts collected dust and I wear on average 7 different styles of shirts white and blue predominately

Great to see, that you do not shy away from wearing an oxford cloth fabric with a suit. Many people say you should never wear that fabric with a suit. However, I don't understand why. I own a crisp white Oxford shirt with a classic Kent collar and I much prefer it over my dress shirts. It is more durable, versitile, more comfortable and wrinkle resistant compared to thinner fabrics.

A common mistake we've all made is choosing the wrong shirts that are not too easy to wear: dark shirts, green stripes and whatnot. Ultimately a crisp white or blue shirt is what it's all about!

I'm a fan of Thomas Mason myself...bought a bunch from Brooks brothers this past year. Another favorite shirt company is Ledbury. I know you mentioned the type of collars...personally my go to is a mid spread with a longer collar points. I'm a fan of a half Windsor and the tie knot fits perfect with that collar.

Excellent video Brian. I love your selection of shirts as they are very versatile and seem as if they would complement any wardrobe. Nice! Thanks, Ed. Yes, early on we were looking at fabrics with a little bit lower quality, but decided to go with Thomas Mason. It's a little bit of a price increase, but making that investment ensures that the shirts will last much longer.

I admire your simplistic style with the Dress Shirts yet it offers versatility and a person can always find something to like about that. It's not my style personal style though in totality as I enjoy wearing more subtle and interesting patterns and even texture patterns in the shirts for the versatility of choice, but that is my personal style and no one else's. Dress Style we all know is a very personal thing to us all. Still, I can learn much from this. Blue is my all-time favorite color and I do really enjoy shirts in all the various shades of blue and various interesting patterns to wear for variety. Going your route surely keeps things simple though.

Loved the video! The selection is common sense and the outfits are great. One detail I would do differently on my shirts is the cuff. I think a 2-button cuff is more practical. I tend to button thr cuff tighter on the arm where I don’t wear my watch, and looser on the arm with the watch.

Awesome tips as always, thanks. Personally I would go for a button down collar on either the Oxford or denim shirt, just to mix it up a little (I am also a sucker for a collar roll). Plus, I don't think there would be a situation where a denim point collar would pass but not a denim button down!

The best looking dress-shirt for me is a blue striped winchester shirt. With button down collar and cocktail-cuffs. Maybe even a collar-link. Its rarely worn by people and really looks sharp. Always.

My “secret sauce” the last decade, through the Brooks Bros shirt program has been... A, 4” spread, 2 button mitered cuff, no pocket, no placket, no pleats on the back and the monogram above the waist (I love to do white on a white shirt, for an embossed look). For a more dressed down look, I switch it up with a button down and a 2 button barrel cuff. The 2 button barrel is unexpected that I get more compliments on as well as the mitered cuff (not as common). Thank you for your channel, we’re on the same page brother!! 👊🏼 p.s. since Brooks is out of the shirt program, where am I going?? I’m missing denim in the rotation...

I’m Irish so there is a slightly reddish hue to my skin (despite a tan from 17 years in Shanghai) which is only obvious when I wear white shirt so I never wear a them anymore, it just doesn’t look good on me. Blue is my white so I have a lot of blue shirts including a denim shirt. Skin tone is also important when choosing a good shirt.

Or are you referring to a specific style like like straight point or spread? I don't wear button up shirts often so I might just star with the white poplin or the blue oxford. Brian, that covers the basics, but for those of us who work with Large Enterprise organisations, a white shirt is almost compulsory uniform wear and the casual styles are restricted to the weekend. To differentation ones self from Politicians, CEO's and Peers, all wearing barrel cuff white shirts, cuffs and collars become the prime point of difference, followed by the choice of tie and cuff links. One only has to watch the Evening News on Television to see how much the accepted Major Business and Federal Politics dress code has reverted to a revival of the 1980's IBM inspired dress code, that was being parioded by the turn of the century. I like to bring them to the dry cleaners even though they can be washed at home. Also, don't wait so long to clean your shirts if you're having issues with collar staining.

The quality of the cotton fabrics for shirts take into account the finest rather than the weight. Nowadays popular is to talks about 150/2 (count). The fibre is compose for 2 ply, and 150 means the thikness of the fibre, the higher the better

Question: How many of each shirt do you guys recommend? Is a single white or blue enough, or would you recommend 2 or 3 of the same thing if worn often?

The gig line is not a thing, it might be something used in the US army but in militaries of other countries thats not what is done. As such it does not translate into civilian clothes. It doesnt work on many long rectangular belt buckles (barrettes not plate buckles), if you want to follow the gig line you need the right buckle. Example: in pants the fly edge is centered in the pant (it follows the sewing) the shirt placket is instead off center, the shirt buttons are whats on the centerline. The shirt will be off center a smidge to meet the fly edge of the pants, visually might be ok for an "order" point of view (try keeping there wearing suspenders) but then when one adds the belt the whole thing goes out of whack. Belt buckles in the military are regulated, in civilian suits aren't. I have a buckle that over the leather shows only two vertical barrettes and a center pin (not a prong), if I were to follow the "gig line" idea the buckle would be visibly off center. Many of my belt buckles are rectangular in shape, they would all look odd if not centered.

The dress shirts are great, Brian. It's Valentine weekend and for work I decided to wear a red dress shirt with the traditional collar and white herringbone tie. Guess you can say a red dress shirt is perfect for either Valentine's Day or Christmas Time.

This is a great video over all! I find it a bit confusing, however, that you say you like a classic collar and mention a French cuff, yet the images you listing different collar and cuff types don't have any labelled classic collar or French cuff. Can anyone clarify what those two look like?

My preferred shopping takes placed at Goodwill but in or near an affluent area. You be surprised at the quality of clothing ; my next stop is a trusted taylor to achieve that near perfect fit. My best haul was seven BB shirts made in USA at .99 each. I achieved a variety of colors ,collar and cuff designs to satisfy the basics plus some.

Is Hopsack not a weave which is amazing in summer or in generell hotter days? Because more air can go through the weave and it keeps better shape than linen? Need confirmation on this, fine gents! Thank you! Oh and btw great video Brian! HQ content like always :)

It definitely is. I typically think of it as "four season" but it really shines in the spring and summer.
