Hey. Human. I say Jared chapter 5 when I mean Jacob 5 for example. Accidentally making mistakes is normal and ought not be exploited. To exploit an obvious honest mistake is that which is dishonest…. Not the mistake.
When it comes to meso vs heartland debates, I think it’s important that we don’t know for sure. If we actually knew, then Moroni’s promise wouldn’t hold any weight. First time readers would be reading a history book rather than a spiritual text looking for a spiritual witness. That’s just my opinion. The more we know, the less faith we need.
For me, the idea that there even are debates, incline me to want to turn to the older sources. In my opinion, this source from those who knew Joseph and the words of Joseph himself make it clear, and resolve the matter once and for all.
I got my copy from Wayne May in April 2024 at a hotel in Colombus, OH during a Book of Mormon Lands tour. Orson Pratt must have had an army of people to add chapters, verses, footnotes, and dates. It still has some western hemisphere thinking, but the hill Cumorah is correctly located in Manchester, Ontario County New York (p 559). Pratt incorrectly locates the Land of Zarahemla in Colombia, South America with the Monongahela River as the river Sidon. The brethren at the time were overly influenced by the thinking of Frederick G. Williams who died in Oct 1842.
The "sth" was added to 33rd degree by another hand in the document I saw. 33° _north_ is implied if it wasn't originally specified. To ensure this is what was meant, reference ALL OTHER STATEMENTS from Joseph Smith, including his corrections for the Wentworth letter.
Great stuff Dan! I’ve found what David Midegah has said to be helpful as well. If I heard him correctly the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee river junction area was anciently an area of their major hub/capital city (Zarahemla?), but anciently the rivers could also take you north to the Great Lakes and Canada or down south to Central and South America. Personally it sounds like the heartland of the USA was the main area of the events of the Book of Mormon but the north and the south were also hinterlands and you’d find Lehi’s descendants everywhere. This to me harmonizes both theories, but would definitely be heartland heavy.
It seems backwards that anyone would say those believing in the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith are "practicing priestcrafts". Rather, logically it is those advocating against and profiting from "philosophies of men" mingled with words of known Anti Mormons and Ex Mormons that meet the definition of "priestcrafts".
@17 min you state Ontario as the final part of the address, as if inferring Ontario Canada. It should be clarified that it plainly states Ontario Co (county) New York.
2nd Nephi 27: 16 Here is "professor-craft" which is under the umbrella of priestcraft. *Be Humble* lds professors or *_your own day_* of reckoning will come.
