I painted our honey oak cabinets with Behr white paint in 2006 after scrubbing with TSP and priming two coat with two coats of Zinsser. I let them dry two days between coats. Calling Home Depot Corporate answer line, they said I should wait a week! I went into the store and spoke to a long time paint department employee. He suggested follow with corporate recommendation, apply a third coat after one week. Then he gave this tip, put a tablespoon of plin white vinegar in it. it will harden the finish. Who knew? Getting ready to touch up,, not totally repaint. Maybe a repaint next year :)

Paint actually needs 30 days to finish curing.

A lot of the new products fully cure at 7-10 days. Especially the low V.O.C

I kept from painting my cabinets for years because people kept telling me that I would just chip chip chip. Well, I finally painted my cabinets over a year ago and no chipping has occurred. I prepped and primed and took my time

Be sure to use a wood grain blocker as well so the tannins don't bleed through!!

Love your videos! So helpful! Any suggestions on coordinating with stained wood trim? My doors and trim are carefully coordinated and quite beautiful so I don’t want to paint them, but unsure of what colors coordinate best.

Before you opt for "sanding" check with the "Amy Howard" 1 step paint line. She and husband were professional cabinet designers prior to going out on their own. No, I am not affiliated in any way - just sharing in case it can help - cabinets are a "bugger" ! Good luck whichever way you go.

That was great, very helpful. I painted my bottom kitchen cabinets and they look pretty good considering. It’s been about 8 months now. Ok the embarrassing part is I painted them but they were wrapped in this weird plastic wrap. They were white. And I was lazy and just painted over them. I cleaned them really good first. I used Behr paint and primer matte finish and I painted them night club, which is a off black that is navy leaning. Then I spray painted the porcelain knobs with Behr black spray paint. And I did a clear coat as well. So it looks good. Yes there is some spots I need to touch up from where the cabinets rub against each other and then the paint wears off. Surprisingly not much though. But these knobs are wearing a bit more, so I figure I better do them again.

Why would you go through all that trouble just to paint your cabinets the wrong way?! If you ever want to sell your house, that will get noticed during an inspection and appraisal. It will hurt you in the long run . Better to start again.

Im leaning towards you suggesting of contented green(lower)/flour white (uppers) for my kitchen cabinets. But what about my walls? I have little natural light so im trying to brighten the room.

We paid for a professional cabinet painter and were very happy with the result, but must say that the most used door corner (garbage) has tiny chips after a year of use. How long should cabinets be chip free?

wow, I would be unhappy with chips in a year, regardless if I spent the money on a pro or all the time DIY. This is the kind of concern that keeps me over-thinking and over-researching! Looking at the wear on my old cabinets: 1) lacking pulls/knobs, lots of fingernail dings on the frame from grabbing the upper edge of drawers...will be reduced by adding the hardware, and 2) most of the finish is excellent, but broken around sink and dishwasher and will have to be sanded...maybe the new paint there should be sealed with a clear marine varnish like we do for wooden outside doors? (I am queen of overkill lol)

Exterior "Metal Doors" can be faux painted to look like wood grain. Did it using a professional faux painter with great success.

Thanks, this is very informative. So how long should I wait after painting my cabinets before I can do some sort of meaningful scratch test? If I try too soon after drying, will it scratch but then harden later?

Can a professional painter, paint our mid brown maple cabinets with a glazed white effect? So I am assuming a two step process for the doors? When choosing a glaze finish what colors would you recommend so it's not too traditional? I find the glazed looks adds some depth. We want more of a Modern Farmhouse look or transitional. I want something with some depth and all-white cabinets to me are boring. We're also considering having the lowers a different color. What finishes or brands should I look for with a professional doing this? Thank You!

This was a great video, thank you for all of the information! I have 2 questions... 1) Is there such a thing as painting your roof? We recently bought a house and the roof is in excellent condition, but it doesn't go with the color I want to paint the house. 2) The seller of our house quickly painted the inside before putting it on the market. The paint in the bathrooms peels and comes off with something just bumping against it. It looks like it may be a Latex paint because it peels off in rubbery sheets. How do we paint over this?? How can this be fixed?? Thank you!!

Cement tile as well as natural clay barrel tile roofs can be painted an entirely different color. Have done it twice with great success. Lasted for years and still looked great when we sold the house years later.

Fun fact: shingle roofs can also be painted another color! There's specific paints for painting roofs. I plan to do it to mine. I've got a lighter roof color and want it nearly black because I'm painting my whole house in Iron Ore. I want the monochromatic look. ✌️

Awesome videos! I've got a question too, please: how would you deal with super bright colors such as red, green, purple, etc... I could see throughout your videos that you're more into neutral greyges/blueges etc... but you don't tackle bright almost flashy paint colours Thanks a lot in advance for your kind answer:-)

Clean well. Use Styx primer. I painted mine 10 Yeats ago. No issues.

My maple cabinets that are stained walnut are chipping. I hired a pro to refinish them 3 years ago and they are so bad, they need it again. So it’s not just paint that chips!

Use a paint roller with the correct “ nap”. It will say on the roller cover packaging whether it’s for smooth, medium, or rough surfaces. 👍😊

Geez... I am having second thoughts about painting my cabinets... I was going to hire a professional. But now I am thinking of just having them re-stained. They are the original 1965 solid wood cabinets with beautiful graining. A real strange wavy pattern... They are over 50 years old and still look nice. Just needing de-greasing, sanding, and re-finishing. I do have to have one drawer repaired as the glide has popped off. I will probably have to do this myself as most companies just want to paint as it is easier to do and they can finish the job quicker and move on to the next job.(they just paint with a sprayer). I will probably use a matte finish for the polyurethane. 😊 The cabinets were built on site when the house was built. Pretty common back then. They must have used older growth trees as the pattern is like a Tiger grain. 🤔

This has nothing to do with paint, but I just cannot forgive the irresponsibility of the architect and builder of the staircase at 1:35. So high, and no railing. Imagine a small child losing balance at the top and crashing onto the steps below. There's no excuse for this.

We're trying to pick a blue for our coastal-inspired open concept living-dining-kitchen condo. We don't want a pastel-looking blue. What LRV should we be looking at, so the walls are blue but not baby boy blue? Ex of colors I am considering: SW 6239, 6240, 6241, 9151, 6242. (Colors listed in LRV order). Thanks!
