Applied for the training on Jan 24

I'm going to apply for my PAL this week, I'm booking the course at least, then I'll submit my application with RCMP. I'm 53yrs old & used to own a 22 & a 12 gauge when I was 12. I'd go to my local Home Hardware (Atlantic Canada) & get a box of ammo for each like it was candy. I'd put my 22 in a foam case, get on my 'Motocross' bike & head to the dump to shoot old cans & TVs & fridges, etc. Times have changed, of course! Questions I have about the safety option on a firearm: One thing I realized about the PROVE method for all rifles & shotguns is, there's no step to check if the safety is on or off. I took a hunting course before (some wilderness thing) and they'd hand you a 12 gauge with a piece of cloth in the barrel, a semi auto with nothing in the mag but with a dead round in the breech, I forget what they did with the bolt action...anyway...good lessons, but whle safety isn't needed after a proper PROVE, shouldn't it be an official step? I know what the PROVE method does & safety switches/levers/buttons are a manufacturer thing, but if you PROVE a gun upon receiving it from someone, shouldn't the safety be on until it's party time? Is there a step after you're finished shooting (the mag is empty, you've put all your rounds into the same hole @ 300m) etc, where applying the safety is an 'official' step? Does PROVE go both ways, like, "I'm done, here you go, they PROVE", or is it "PROVE, I'm done, here you go, they PROVE again"?

In the US, I can go to a store and buy an air gun like I buy a can of soda. Yet, in this crazy country, that same gun is considered a firearm even though no chemical propellant is used. An absolute idiotic process to plink in my back yard.

Hey I am gonna be in Canada for about 6 months every year. I am a UK citizen and have shot since I was 14. I want a PAL in Canada for wildlife defence, do I need to be a resident to get one etc.? Can foreigners get PAL's?

Dont you limit models and then jack imports coming in single? Wasn't that the idea then due to the discrepancy that was found.

Hi Sam, that's really great information I have one question: I came to Canada around 2 years ago, and I don't have any references that i know for 3 years here in Canada (and i assume people from abroad can not be a reference). So in this case should I wait for 1 more year before applying?

Hi Sam. Thanks for the video. I have a question about the photo for application for pal. Do we just put the photo in the envelope with our documents or are we supposed to affix/tape it to the marked area on application? Might be a silly question but want to make sure it's done right. Thanks

One thing I can’t seem to get a straight answer about… I used to have a RPAL but let it expire (foolishly, as it now seems) about 15 years ago. If I reapply, I’m not a renewal but I’m not a new application either. Do I still need the course? Can I even still get the restricted licence? We just bought a small farm so before we add any livestock it seems wise to get a rifle but an old western style revolver would be a lot of fun as well. I certainly have lots of space to shoot on my property.

Hey just watched your video. I am first nation cree band member from AB. Being on the reserve i have been waiting since january when i passed my CFSC and my hands on exam. Sent everything in and yet no license yet. Is that common its now july lol. Some people waited 2 months from start to finish. is it bcuz i am first nation and reside on a reservation? How can I find out if I am able to get a license with a firearms ban from 18 years ago? I got a pardon and I think I'm allowed to get an unrestricted firearm but not restricted. Really sucks because the charge didn't involve firearms at all, I was 17 years old... and I was just an "accomplice". I didn't do anything violent.

Anyone who could give me an idea about the timeline for a basic PAL? Take the course. Apply through the RCMP. References are checked, criminal record checked, doctor possibly contacted, etc. After the course & application submitted, are we talking 3 months? 6 months? A year? If I wanted to take a beginner's hunting trip with a guide in BC, like in a group, should I book it less than a year in advance? And if you've been treated for depression, and it was just "feeling sad, but all the time", not a dangerous thing at all, never has opting out been a consideration, etc - should you just answer "no"? There's feeling low, but there's far worse as we all know. If I for instance had SSRI's (Paxil) for 6 months over a decade ago & haven't needed them since, is that level of detail working against me? I don't want to withhold info but I don't want to be a victim of lazy definition. I've never been charged with anything other than 2 speeding tickets in the early 80s & I'm as steady as they come. No wife or kids (another story), so no one else in my home to risk access. No health issues, still have 20/20 vision even. My friend's father was a range officer, so I've shot every kind of gun there is, even full auto (which he wasn't allowed to own but the local RCMP let him). Only 4 rounds in the mag though, it was kind of boring. It was a German MP something or other. My uncle has a Luger my grandfather took from a Nazi he deleted in WW2. I shot it too, man was it an awful pistol...

Hi Sam i could really use your help! I've tried to contact the application help number but cannot get through. the photo requirements seem confusing to me, does it have to be an exact size ? i dont quite understand the photo requirement portion and I don't want to send in the wrong size photo and prolong my application since is like to get it asap ofcourse. or if anyone here could give me an example of what size the photo they sent in was?
