The Peak End Rule: What You Actually Remember From a Experience

People tend to judge and remember experiences based on how they felt at the peak and at the end of it. This psychological phenomenon is known as the peak-end-rule. The model was first proposed by Barbara Fredrickson and Daniel Kahneman and infers that instead of remembering a whole experience we only remember snapshots of it. Today we know that how well the rule works also depends on our expectation going into the experience.

Before a new experience, you can consciously lower expectations. This sets up a lower threshold for negativity, which makes the experience more acceptable or memorable with a more “open minded” approach. Prejudging is often a negative factor wherein imagination sets you up,or teases you. Simply let it happen on its own terms. Giving situations a chance to play out is the policy that keeps anticipation from clouding judgement. Relax and be patient!

Movies have to face this problem, for example I can barely remember anything about the first Avatar movie, yet it was a huge box office hit. But ask me for a line from little known movies and I have plenty of them. That’s because I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Ie “Attaboy Luther!” From the Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts.

The most important thing is to do your thing to the best of your ability allowing experience and feedback to refine the rough edges. The biggest errors are, a) creating unrealistic expectations in the minds of potential customers (usually through bullshit advertising), and b) trying to live up to other people's expectations, particularly in personal relationships. Expectations exist in the individual's mind and are beyond the control of anyone else. Setting yourself the goal of "meeting or exceeding expectations" is a suicide mission doomed to failure.

I found this video confusing because I was thinking of peaks as the best moments. Everything becomes obvious when peaks are thought of as the most standout moments, whatever that would be in context. That experiment makes no sense if looking for the peak “good moment”, but if the peak is the pain from the water at 14 degrees, then it makes perfect sense. The second scenario is preferred because it ends on slightly less discomfort, and the peak of that discomfort is before the end.

I was born with psychic ability since young. Even though I haven't watched the video yet (which I will after this), I already know psychically what it is about: it is the idea and theory of how people reach their peak before ending. You know, the highs and lows of life - reaching the top of one's career and falling. Okay, anyway, enough talk, time for me to watch the video to confirm my psychic accuracy.

I took my wife to Disney World during its 50th Anniversary, for the 1st Anniversary of our wedding. I pulled out all the stops, even inquiring about the Disney Vacation Club so we could tour the Riviera. It was a full 5 day vacation, visiting all 4 theme parks. I made sure the 1st and 5th day were both at Magic Kingdom, and we did Magic Kingdom After Hours on the 3rd day, after being in Animal Kingdom, to exploit this exact phenomenon. We stayed at the All Star Movies, a Disney Resort Hotel. I literally blew through $5,000 and I have absolutely no regrets. I even have exclusive 50th Anniversary souvenirs that will be worth a lot of money in the future.

The peak rule applies to women in their 20s big time. They expect to find their "guy" in their peak years but don't get him. Then in their 30s and 40s wonder where did all the good men go and end up settling and bitter. So based on this rule, it is better for women in their 20s to not go into trying to find the top alpha mate but the nice guy. Then when the women is much older she will think her choice of man much better as she remembers her life. Tragic most women don't apply this to their lives.....

@TheThora17 Well, since you brought it up, Thora the Explorer, let's use you as Test Subject #1. How old are you? Dress size? Married? Kids? Divorced? Age? How much do you make in your profession? What is your profession?....Start with those honest answers and then I will break down how the peak rule applies directly to you.
