Thanks for watching this first episode of 'To BOOST or not to BOOST?', a show in which I try out guitar tube amplifiers with boost/overdrive pedals to see if I prefer the pure unaltered amp tone or the more tight and focused boosted tone. This first episode is about the Peavey 6505 in combination with the Maxon OD808, both classic in the metal/rock genre. I used my ESP LTD EC1000T Eclipse with the EMG 57/66 set for the riffs!

So, which amps from my collection should I feature next? The boost pedals in my current collection: OD808, Laney BCC Steelpark, Electric Eye Audio Mud Killer, Boss SD-1 and MXR 10 band. I actually preferred the unboosted tone. I use a boost on mine but it is a clean boost, an MXR/CAE MC401 Boost/Linedriver at 18V set to 9 o'clock. It just allows me to drop the pre-gain slightly for a clearer gain structure that does not rely so much on V2. I have used this on a JSX, 3120, and 6534+

I have a 6505+ and honestly if I play a guitar with Emgs I usually prefer not to boost the amp. It has a sort of rawness and edgyness in the pick attack that you loose with the boost. I prefer to boost the amp with passives. Great video as always.

I have noticed that difference when I use my KH602 (EMG’s) I use no boost. With my Les Paul I use my boost.

I agree emg’s are very hot and don’t really benefit from a boost. I use passive pickups so boosting is good 👍 but either way you can’t lose. More tone options.

It’s a Peavey 6505 being played by a great player so both boosted and unboosted sound great! Personally I think the question of boost or no boost really comes down to what kind of sound you want/need out of the amp. Great demo!

Great video, I liked both with and without as they would obviously be used in different applications. I use a Suhr KoKo (Clean/Mid boost) on my 98 Rivera KH55 Knucklehead. They are a great amp but with a really loose bottom end, the KoKo boost tightened it up nicely without losing the dynamics of the amp. It is a tone monster now!!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻

That little extra punch in the low end when you don't use the boost is exactly what a lot of players are looking for in a rig for down tuned heavy playing. The boost removes that. With the boost, it sounds like a recording of a guitar, more two dimensional, more tamed but some punch removed. That may work better in a mix, I don't know.

You have to dial the amp according to the fact you're booster. Yes it removes some low end with a boost but you can always add a bit back to have just as much bass as before but tighter. Every amps benefit from a boost. The attack, the clarity, the tighter response, the mid bump and added agression more than make up for the slight bass you can still dial back in.

Yeah, but that extra low end is just gonna get buried by the bass and make you cut less in a band setting.

This is completely wrong. If you are playing something with a 7 or 8 string with a lot of staccato type things you need to cut a ton of bass. Or even playing in drop b with a 6 string I like to cut the bass.

This is the video I didn't know I was waiting for! I usually play with the Archetype: Nolly amp 3, which is a very good emulation of this Peavey. I think both sounds are useful. It gonna depend on the style you wanna get. Personally, I prefer something more dynamic and versatile, but I'm open to turn on a boost for some parts. Thanks for your videos. Cheers!

What I love about the 6505(+) is how versatile it is within the high gain niche. Unlike a duel recto or something of that sort where you HAVE to have a boost to attenuate the low end, or in the other end of the spectrum an engal or 5153 that sounds like a swarm of bees if you add one in front. Like you can use a boost as I do to kind of carve out a unique sound for yourself out of an already rad baseline, or run it raw and just embrace it’s mid heavy but unique characteristics.

I always loved the 5150/6505 boosted. It's not a massive difference but it's like some extra butter on your pasta. It gets sort of more compressed and dense and very satisfying to play. That's said, I always keep the OD volume at noon as it's often just some extra noise while the amp has more gain than needed even using the normal gain input (which I recommend also). It's just that extra layer of mids and tighter low end that I look for.

The way you have the amp dialed in, I preferred un-boosted. With my 6505+, I dial in a bit darker and prefer an Ibanez TS-9 or a Horizon Devices Nano Attack. I have a Maxon OD-808, but it sounds really bright and a little tinny to my ears. That said, the 6505+ is the most played amp in my collection. Fantastic video and look forward to more in this series! \,,/

I like both tones boosted or not. I have my 6505+ with a TS808 tube screamer & I find myself switching the pedal on and off between riffs... It's a subtle difference but I notice it on lower end notes on my Schecter Elite Omen 7 string! Great video! More 6505 love plzz

Been looking for someone to run straight into the front of the 2-input model. Tube Screamers are all fine and dandy, but I much prefer either running straight in and getting the all-amp sound, or using a distortion pedal to get all my gain. I don't like when people ONLY demo amps with ODs in front, not every piece of gear needs help. And if it does, maybe it's not so great for metal. I think the 6505 definitely sounds better without a boost, the palm mutes are just really deep but still sound defined and ballsy. Can't wait to see the rest of the series!

i always think that the newerer EVH amps are sounding like the older peavey 5150/6505 with a boost in the front, the 6534+ really needs a boost, the ultra and xxxx series are completely different animals. great video again

I own and use this setup for my main rig(studio & live). I prefer the boosted tone simply due to the guitars I use; seven string guitars tuned to drop A. The boosted tone provides a little more tightness in the low end with a noticeable difference with pick attack.

Oh man how i love this Amp.. since i got mine in 2006 :) ... It is still a Killer. After many Experiments i like to Boost it with a Boss SD-1 nowadays. Sounds a little more Modern to me than a TS-9 or 808 (have both) on the Red Channel. But the TS(es) can bring some singing middy sweetness on the Leads if you want to let them stand out more without touching the amp.

nice one!! I'm boosting a 6505MH with a TC Spark booster, it's an awesome booster for a nice price, it retains the original characteristics from guitar without coloring it (in flat mode). I've tried with some overdrives as SD-1, TS9, TS Mini, Spark mini and the best results were with the sparks.. by the way, using it on clean channel and a Strat the 6505 can deliver some really shiny cleans, for those who say it's not possible to have "nice" cleans with it, I disagree :) give it a try with a single coil and a spark. I've bought a 6505MH after a lot of research and watching many many times your videos about the peaveys and oranges :) thanks for sharing them!!!

In the case of the 6505, I definitely preferred the fundamental tone of the non-boosted signal. The OD just made the gain structure too splatty. If there was one benefit it was the upper mid hike, the primary benefit of Tubescreamer circuit. In my opinion a half-decent noise gate at the front of the chain and 6-band graphic EQ in the loop would've achieved the same effect without smearing the gain structure. Ugh, I've been playing for too long.. 🤣

I can’t choose which I prefer. Both great tones and would be happy with either tone out of my own 6505+. Would probably go with the boosted tone if using a 7 string

I like saggy and loose! Just funnin here, still loves my Hughes And Kettner Grandmeister 40. Lose or tight makes me happy. And some amazing cleans when needed. I have used a bunch you have on the wall but this is what i bought. Love the vh lunchbox as well.

I'm obsessed with boost pedals. I agree with you saying that each amp has it's own unique saturation and character, and I feel the same for different overdrive pedals. They all affect the direct signal in a way that's interactive with the amp's gain stages and EQ section, and different overdrives hit preamp tubes in a different way. I love going down rabbit holes with overdrive pedals. Personally I prefer boosted tones, but there's no right or wrong way IMO

@@SonicDriveStudio I love them. The Mesa Flux drive is one of my favorites. Grid Slammer is a great alternative to a TS9, the Earthquaker Plumes is versatile and is basically 3 pedals in 1, it's an endless rabbit hole. I can sit for hours tweaking drive pedals on the way into a high gain amp.

I have the 6505 120w and I have an MT-15. Personally, I like the 6505 unboosted but I do like the MT15 boosted on the red channel with the amps gain at about 9 o'clock.

Definitely to Boost! I would turn the gain to about 12 midnight to get a more clean boost type sound but that's it.

Future boost pedals to try....Airis Effects Savage Drive, KSR Eros, Pepers Dirty Tree.......the KSR Eros is probably the best boost/OD pedal out today,imo. It's extremely versatile, loaded with features and can be used on almost any amp in any situation.

There is a noticeable difference in sound when you isolated them, my ear was happiest with the Maxon engaged. On side note I have the 6505+ combo amp and I like to use my MXR 6 band EQ pedal in the effects loop which really helps to shape my sound. Thank you!

It all depends on your approach. If you truly want a natural, raw amp tone then no boost is the best choice. However, the boost really helps add some sustain to your signal path. Which would work perfect if you’d like to either add sustain to your palm mutes, or even use the boost for solos.

I want to blend them. Boost lows & cut highs on a track w/o boost and up highs & cut lows on a boosted track. Curious to see it it will become more heavy on chugs and more crispy on individual notes.

It would depend on the pickups and tuning too. If you have let's say an EMG 81 and tuned to something like E standard or Drop C then is not necessary unless that is the sound you want. It becomes a must with low tunings and thicker sounding pickups.

Hearing you play, I like both tones. When I play my 5150 in the room, I much prefer it boosted with that exact pedal. You should do an ENGL Savage or Fireball!

It depends of the amp but, i used boost (same maxon) with level at max for a long time in front of high gain amp like EVH, peavey Ultra or JVM… And one day, i tried to start set level at noon. And i found it really better for me. I push it to 6/7 when the amp is less compress like the Ultra. It just tight and lightly compress the sound without being harsh or honky or add too much mid… specialy with EMG. And not really adding gain. In other hand, to play this style of metal i think the 57 is not the best choice. It sounds like a PAF and it has more presence in the upper mids, and give a « vintage » vibe to the sound to my opinion. It’s really nice for solo. But to play thrash or death riff i prefer use the good old 81. I did many AB comparison with different guitars and 81 came back in it for this purpose. 57 is multi style pickups and is really nice!

I prefer the boosted tone because I don't like hearing the chirps and rattles on in the high-end of the tone without it. I also like the extra bit of bite that comes with the boosted tone.

I preferred the boosted version for it's improved clarity and livelier sound. I recent used the Screamer effect in the HX Stomp with the Engl (Angl) Amp simulation to recreate the sound of a boosted Marshall JCM800 Amp. The results were absolutely stunning. The boost did some kind of voodoo magic to the tone just where needed to push it to the next level. Thanks

I’ve never really thought of a boost changing the amp, only what the amp receives. I have a Revv G20 that I’m still trying to figure out. It’s really flubby so I love a boost to shave off some bottom.

Here's something you might want to try that I do with my PRS MT15. Try to make each sound like the other. For example, on the raw tone, dial back the bass and boost the mids on the EQ dials and with the boosted tone, boost the bass and dial back the mids a bit. They may never quite sound the same but doing so can produce a compromise tone where you get a tone in between a pure boosted and pure raw tone

I have a 6505 and I use an Ibanez ts9 with a schecter SLS elite which has modern fluence pick ups and to play metalcore you need that set up. That's the classic metalcore sound. Active pickups Ibanez tubescreamer or maxon and a 6505. Trivium august burns red bullet for my valentine all that remains all use that exact set up. Classic

With such a gainy amp, it seems to be better to drop the gain on the tube amp, add some gain on a solid state pedal (distortion not so much boost) and mix them for a combined tone that has bite, dynamics and as much gain as you choose. This boost is literally adding what the amp already has. It doesn't do a hell of a lot. 6505 seems to be unaffected by this pedal.

I didn't know the 6505 was this tight by itself. Honestly, the boosted sound was slightly imprecise and, as you said, scratchy, to my ears. I like it better unboosted.

Great video, I love those 6505's! I prefer the unboosted tones, although I can see how in the mix the boosted tone leaves more low end territory for the bass to occupy. But the unboosted has more character IMO. Btw have you ever tried the 6505+? I'm curious what the difference between the 6505 and 6505+ is in practical terms.

I've never needed to boost at the input of high gain amps. What is effective that pedals like a TS accomplish by coincidence based on how it affects the tonality is really high pass filtering. Where I would use a clean boost is on the serial send/return path just to be able to toggle between normal rhythm levels and louder lead levels.

Mate....this is insane, both no boost and boost sound amazing, I prefer the no boost sound, pure raw tone but my point here is that the whole making of this song sounds brutal, drums, bass, guitars..... there is some sort of something missing here that makes what you do something fucking brilliant in terms of production!!! The bosted tone sounds a lot better in the mix. The low end doesn't interfere with the kick and bass and the chords ring a lot clearer. I have never played a 6505, but I bet it feels better without the boost because of having more low end, but it sounds a looot better with other instruments when the boost is on.

The Only time I use the maxon to boost the sound is when I do this chugging sounds at breakdowns to make the sound bigger and round ! Leads , Rythm , chorus parts I use the amps own sound

i always prefore no boost, because I feel like they just introduce noise and make it harder for me to efficiently mute the strings between staccato-played notes. but on the other hand, i don't like amps with some kind of lower resonant peak, even though I know it's not the resonant peak I'm talking about, but the overall shape of the frequency response which I like to have its loudest area a little higher in the mids than lots of stock high gain amps do - their highend doesn't sound as open to me as I'd like it to be. boosts can solve this, but so can a little knowledge about tube amp circuitry and a soldering iron, which is what I did to my 6505mh, which sounds now more boosted, but without boost.

I would boost but lower the gain on the amp a little bit to bring back some of the dynamics. Definitely works both ways but I personally always like to boost because it ALWAYS sounds better in a mix to do that if you can still get the dynamics out of the amp.

In my humble opinion the boost from the Maxon definitely fills out the tone. Thicker and more condensed which I prefer for Heavy Metal. For Rock Rock in the vane of Soundgarden or Alice in Chains I'd keep it out.

Definitely without the boost because it sounds way more chunky and thick and has more growl. The boosted sounds good too but is too thin and missing some of the thick growly body that the unboosted tone has.

It depends on where you need your tone to be. Imo the Peavey 5150/6505 need a boost. An Airis Effects Savage Drive is my favorite Drive pedal for this amp. The extra gain and tightness controls push these amps into being absolute monsters.

I always use a boost. I will however, use a specific boost for a specific amp. They all react differently.

The unboosted has way more warmth which I dig. You can be heavy and warm. Look at Dimebag Darrel. I love the warm sound over an overly scooped boosted sound. Boosted is scooped whether anyone wants to admit or not

Maybe good to record both , the one that trails behind slightly will make the guitar sound huge !!

I prefer boosted tones by default but your raw unboosted tone sounds incredible. Love both with and without boost in this vid :) Boost or not to boost? It depends on style, guitar and amp.

Good point! There is no definitive answer but that means that I can make infinite amounts of episodes with different guitars, amps, pedals and styles! Should be fun and hopefully a fun and interesting document!

Often it depends what pickup you are using. I’d like to see the difference between active and passive. In my experience the difference between boosted or not has more impact on passives than for eg Emgs. Passives tend to have more bass

I absolutely agree with you about passives being alot more sensitive to boosts. Also agree with your idea of comparing actives to passives in an unboosted context.
