A full, independent, non-paid review of the Shark Stratos.
Shark has been chasing making their DuoClean, Zero-M, Power Fins... you know, all the market-speak.. uprights work properly for a few years now. While the Apex and the Vertex were essentially beta tests for new designs, Shark is hoping that the new Stratos fixes their flaws.
The Apex and Vertex were known for being easily overcome by excessive pet hair and inadequately agitating carpet. Does the Stratos fix that? Even more important, if it does fix those issues is it worth the $500 price tag? We are going to get real in this review and give you the full scoop.

We love making these reviews and providing information to the public. However, buying new vacuum models at retail and spending time testing them gets pricey! If you found this video helpful or if we saved you a few bucks, you can thank us by giving a Super Thanks. It is not necessary, but it is always greatly appreciated!

Long haired lady here...the anti hair wrap is amazing....saves so much time! It is amazing! Love it! Anti hair wrap, once you've tried it, you will never go back! So many wasted hours cleaning out brush rolls over years. A gross chore! Get sebo to do anti hair wrap then will talk.

Yes, Duo Clean works well in the beginning, no arguing with that. I will say, the long term issue with the Fins is splitting down the middle. Keep an eye on those because once they start to split they will start to accumulate hair.

I’m a long haired gal too, with a long hair Samoyed dog and a long haired cat. The SEBO wins hands down. You can just pull the brush roll out about once a month and clean it and put it back. The Shark splits and doesn’t clean nearly as well in the long run - once it goes bad, good luck replacing it. Plus, when your SEBO brush roll wears out, you can easily buy a replacement and install in 10 seconds. I purchased a SEBO to replace my shark because of the ease of popping in and out the brush roll for cleaning.

SEBO are excellent machines. I absolutely love my SEBO Felix and the motor speed that can be turned down for quieter cleaning or delicate jobs. I’ve not got long hair. Any hair I’ve gotten on the brush - brush slides out real easy to clean, but anti hair wrap on Shark is very good feature.

I definitely would buy a navigator if I had to buy a shark. I kinda liked how they improved it, but it seems this small improvement took a toll on the build quality which is kinda shameful in my opinion, especially when they charge 500 bucks for it. These machines are really disposable machines with nearly premium pricetag. Great review as always.

Chris, retail on the Stratos is $499, which is the price you will find everywhere except Shark's site. If you buy direct from Shark right now, there is a coupon code which brings the basic package down to $300. Note that when I was discussing price I mentioned "even if you can find a coupon". That price will come and go, but people buying it at Target (where the are sold out) are paying $499 for just the vacuum. If you get the True Pet package on Sharks site, it is also $499.

Thank you for this video, I enjoyed learning about the Riccar line. My mom just bought the Stratos, fully loaded with all accessories plus a floor steamer and she paid $373 (tax included)-- it will arrive tomorrow! Now if she doesn't like the performance of it, she will return it. Also I never heard of the Riccar line until today. It's not listed in any upright comparison. I searched on Consumer Report and had to specify it, like I did today and the model used Superlite (?) rated a 55 /78. Honestly, it's hard to decide when we as the consumers are relying on Consumer Report or other sources and this is the first time I ever heard of this brand was here! We had a Miele for 15 years and had a specific breaking down with the outer canister and they tried to get it fix but no one here in WA could guide them where to sent for repairs and that included the Miele company. In the end, I do believe they loved the Miele but to get it repair was not readily available to them so they had to choose another option with a affordable price point.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble they ran into fixing the Miele. I do know that for the past 3 years of the pandemic parts have been very hard to get. The Stratos is nowhere near a Miele, but it should still serve them well for some time. As long as they maintain it, the lifespan will be much longer. Cheers!

I own a Vertex and I personally find that it cleans my rugs just as good as my neighbors SEBO Felix. If not better. But the main thing I discovered is that the duo clean rollers on the Vertex are an order of magnitude better on hardwood floor. You could swipe your fingers across the floor for 5 feet after cleaning with the Vertex and you couldn’t find a single trace of dust. With the SEBO I would have to wash my hands because they would look filthy. Also I have an outside trash can right next to the door so emptying the bin is effortless and doesn’t dirty my house.

I'm glad it's working out for you! I still contend that the Felix with the parquet tool attached will clean just as well. Perhaps you weren't using the parquet tool? Cheers!
@Frenchfrys17
@Frenchfrys17 Год назад
@@HouseOfVacuums Ahh yes, the Parquet head was my primary when I tried it out since 85% of my apartment is hardwood. My neighbors house was much larger and more 50/50. He absolutely *loved* remembering how he had to strategically place the cleaning heads by the stairs so that it was easier to transition from the hardwood downstairs to the carpet upstairs, then coming to his bathroom and having to back downstairs to grab it. Eventually he just strapped the other head on the unit at all times which was hilarious. And unplugging and replugging the vacuum when he reached different sections of his house. When he let me try out the unit, the parquet tool had hair jammed in the wheels and the front bristle was missing. He told me he removed the front bristle because it wouldn’t pick up pet hair and larger objects with it. I asked for it back because It was taking two passes to clean my floors (especially the crevices) without it. Turn out he forgot where it was. I’ll assume the attachment would be almost as good as the Duoclean head with both bristles. But it was still less of a hassle than the main brushhead which needed constant hair untangling. I think if I had just bought the SEBO Felix Prenium or the Dart with the Parquet as an add on, I would be satisfied enough to keep it, since I don’t have a spouse or a pet as of now. And since I can reach everywhere in my small apartment without replugging and there’s only one place with carpet. But I would also pay for an actual upholstery tool which does not come as standard. And bags. And filters. In addition to the $700 price tag. And reserve a large portion of my closet to store it. With my $300 Cordless Vertex, I just fold the small thing in half and stash in a drawer when not in use. It does all I need for less hassle and less than half the price. Time will tell is it lasts 5 years or more, but so far it has been a godsend. But if it breaks at the 5 year mark, I would be fine given the price point and the performance. With the Sebo Felix, that thing better last me 10 years or I will be very very angry.

Of course I regularly vacuum with my head 2 foot away from the motor head so wear hearing protection while vacuuming is.... no maybe it's annoying but the sound should drop by the inverse square of the distance from the head. I doubt dangerous. Considering my head is more than 5 foot away - I feel safe for now. (what was the dB reading at 5 foot away?) Don't get me wrong - my hearing, eyesight and all other senses ARE important to me. I wear hearing and eye protection during ANY risky work. But annoying sound is less than damaging sound... I hope. BUT - thanks for the detailed review.

I personally think that these are good vacuum cleaners especially for homes with 50/50 split of carpet and hardwood floors though there’s a couple of things I don’t like about newer style shark vacuums, 1. The main carpet brushroll is not user replaceable 2. Shark has a pretty bad warranty service and the power head is not covered under warranty in most cases. Other than that it’s a pretty solid vacuum.

There is no way this vacuum is 93 decibels!! Your decibel meter must be off. I have the Shark Vertex which uses the same motor as the Stratos I believe and I measured it at about 80-85 decibels and thats when I literally have the meter on top of the machine and when it’s a few feet away, it’s around 75. Besides, I believe there are regulations on how loud vacuums can be and 93 decibels would definitely be over the regulations!!! Otherwise, great vacuum and amazing review video!!! 😊
@Dirty_Bear22
@Dirty_Bear22 Год назад
Take Decibel testing with a grain of salt. The size, shape, and materials in the room have a pretty big impact. And very few decibel meters are regularly calibrated, and most don’t even support calibration. You would need a specialty built room and equipment for accurate decibel comparisons.

i picked up a slightly used shark stratos for 150, i also have a shark uv795 which i really like. i used the stratos in a room that i vacuumed with the old shark and i couldn't believe the dirt that came up. i always thought the suction was great on my old shark but the stratos is noticeably stronger. i also love not having to clean the hair out of the roller every couple weeks. the five years i had my old shark i only had to replace a small hose coming from the power unit to the wand so i am hoping the stratos will last as long. i would love to try the riccar but the bags kill it for me. i hate having to buy bags and cost of bags could possibly pay for another shark in 4 to 5 years. shark is the clear winner as long as it lasts at least 5 years. would i have purchased the stratos for 400? absolutely not, that is a ridiculous price for a vacuum. look around and you can find a good deal on a used or refurb.

I got the Stratos, the AZ3000 one. It was on sale $299 on Shark's website, $130 off. I think it's the best vacuum I've ever had in 40 years of buying vacuums. It sucked up a TON of deeply embedded dust, dirt, and dog hair. Canister was full adter just vacuuming my bedroom. I believe it's as powerful as my Sirena... maybe more. And being an upright makes it so convenient. The Sirena was so much work to set up, use then clean, and I didn't vacuum as often as I should have. But I'm grabbing my Stratos at least every 3rd day. It's amazing!

Functionally, I do think the nozzle grooming on the Stratos is better than previous Sharks and that does help some. That being said, much of that dirt you noticed on the initial clean was likely because your old vacuum was underperforming due to age, versus the Stratos over-performing. My major issue with Shark is the lack of parts availability. Only certain assemblies are available, and when they machine goes out of production there are literally no parts. I just can't endorse something that will force you to send it to a landfill if it breaks past it's production run.

That's really interesting that the Dart doesn't have the brushroll shutoff switch in Europe. Here in North America it does have the switch right next to the brushroll status light. Al that is needed to properly work on bare floors is a carpet/floor switch, debris gates at the front of the brushroll and a sealing strip behind the brushroll. @HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums Год назад
I definitely see where you are coming from, but I must respectfully disagree. Any horse hair bare floor brush, particularly from Miele, Sebo or Wessel, will clean equally with a fluffy roller. The main problem with the DuoClean design is complexity that hurts reliability and the cleaning power sacrifice on carpet... because there is definitely a trade-off there. For bags, I think if we were still using paper bags it might be an apples to apples comparison. However, with polypropylene HEPA bags, there is zero dust bypass. It still kind of seems like magic to me. Comparing a HEPA bag to bagless isn't even a contest in the hygiene department. Check out my bag vs bagless video in my Shark playlist, it goes into greater detail. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers!

Sebo does not clean carpet as deeply as the previous generation SHARK… and this Shark has even better suction… Sebo and the other “BIG BOYS” do not have hair anti wrap technology; added labor avoided with Shark. Shark has a true Hepa sealed system. Does a Sebo get under furniture like a Shark? I doubt it. Any above floor attachments on that Riccar? I like bagged rather than bagless, but to imply the Shark is still what it use to be and cannot compete shows undo bias.
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums Год назад
I've said it before and I'll say it again: if Shark was to make a quality vacuum tomorrow and provide parts, I would be stoked. The only bias I'm bringing is my repair experience from the field, if you can call that bias. Cleaning is far more than raw motor power, which is a consistent theme throughout all my videos. Check out the videos on agitation, etc. I'm not saying everyone needs a Sebo. But yes, it will go further under furniture than a Shark if you don't go to liftaway mode. Liftaway is incredibly tiring if you have a lot of furniture. In normal mode the Shark has one of the highest body profiles of any vacuum available. And Zero-M or PowerFins are not a "technology". It is a comb and some rubber fins. The reason why you don't see anyone else trying something similar isn't because Shark is more brilliant. It's because the anti-hair wrapping pieces become worn in 2-3 years leaving you cleaning the brushroll again. I appreciate that you like the Shark and that's fine, but I will back up literally everything that I say in my Shark videos with over 12 years of experience in and around these machines. None of your points address the core faults with Shark uprights, both current and past.

I have two Sharks. NV500 and NV340. I was crazy enough to fit Sebo K1 motor (700 watts) to the NV340. That did noticeably difference compared to the Shark 750 watt motor. NOTE that these are EU limited motors so wattage can't be greater than 900 watts. I fitted 1200 watt motor to my Sebo K1 and gave it to my parents. They love it! And now my experience about Sharks. They are kind of nice, but pre motor filter gets dirty very quickly and they also leak dust trough those pre motor filters resulting fine dirt going past the motor. That can't be good thing for motors + hepa filter gets dirty sooner than it should be. And yes handle weight is too high. If I compare these Sharks to my Sebo Felix there is no comparison. Felix is just so much better especially in build quality.

As always with Shark, I can't endorse them because they are not truly serviceable. You can change filters and clean them, but if you have a problem with the floor brush or the hose, you can't get replacement parts. They are a mid-price range disposable vacuum. i have had my shark uv795 for 5 years. the only thing that broke was the short hose from the roller or brush unit to the wand. i replaced it for about $10. other than that its been flawless. i will hand it down to my daughter as i just purchased the stratos. i also think you can find most parts used on ebay as people part out vacuums. before my uv795 i had a dyson and that thing was a pos, i threw that one in the garbage because of major plastic cracking problems. i was very disappointed in dyson.

I've really have a love/hate relationship with Shark 🤣. I got a Shark Rotator lift away 3 years ago that didn't exactly blow me away. Then I got an upright water vacuum, the Quantum X. I liked it at first because the suction was great, but it's very heavy so I couldn't carry it upstairs and downstairs. Can you believe this thing has no carry handle?? So, I was stuck with a lower-floor-only vacuum... and my upstairs are all carpets. Hose and accessories weren't good, and then it started cutting off randomly after a year. So, THEN I got a Sirena water filtration canister vacuum, and I do love it very much. Amazing suction, filtration, and air purification. But it's a lot to put together, set up and use. I like the canister concept but miss the quick convenience of an upright. I just can't seem to be satisfied lol!! I'm really considering the Shark Stratos. It seems like great filtration, suction, and versatile. I just got the Shark Stratos Ultralight Corded Stick Vacuum to use on stairs and quick jobs, and it's really great. Its dust cup is very small, though. It seems Shark listened to customer feedback and created this new model based on that. I enjoyed this review. Good points to consider. If I can sell the Sirena, I still might give the Stratos upright a try.

I would just stay away from water filtration vacuums altogether. Years ago consumer reports did a story on how the early Rainbow E-Series filtered worse than almost everything on the market. The reason, as they discovered, was because air travels through the water in bubbles and the finest of dust just pops right out the other side. Since that report, Rainbow put a HEPA filter on their machine (like the Sirena). But that means that any other sealed HEPA system will filter just as good with the inconvenience of water. If you are looking for something light weight, sealed filtration, and built for the long haul I would look at the Sebo E3. I have a couple videos about it here on the channel. Easy to use, 10 year warranty, made in Germany, no water, toolless maintenance.... the list goes on. Cheers!

I just picked up a Stratos on Sharks' website for 139.99. I only bought it because i feel it was a deal that you can't let up. even if I don't end up using it I can end up selling it to someone else. after a bit of research, I'm kind of second guessing my decision as i honestly cannot believe this vacuum is not repairable. for 140 did i get a good deal, is it worth keeping and using even if it potentially breaks, should i sell it?

In general bagless vacuums are the worst vacuums and are the worst type of vacuums you can buy due to there poor design but there are always ignorant people out there who think that they are the best when they really haven’t tried the best vacuums out there, they only buy vacuums off of Target or Walmart and compare them to a dirt devil, but then again Miele and sebo don’t really need recognition because they already have there loyal customers who are down to pay the correct price for a vacuum unlike dyson or shark owners who say OMG a Miele cost 1,000 when they buy expensive phones or waste there money on things and complain about a Miele being too expensive.✌️

Correct. At the time of filming Shark was charging $300 and all other retailers were charge $400+ which is crazy. But even at the $300 price point, there are better options out there. Sebo Dart $549, Riccar R25S $499, etc are all slightly higher priced, but much better long-term investments.

A 500 dollar vacuum should get you a motor that lasts 1000 hours and emits a soft and pleasant tone. For about the same price as the shark stratos or sometimes cheaper you could get a Zero G vacuum, it’s made in China just like the shark but it is a much better quality machine.
@Frenchfrys17
@Frenchfrys17 Год назад
The Stratos is currently a $300 vacuum if you aren't a brainlet. Zero G doesn't have a fluffy roller for hard floor, anti hair wrap technology. Also I refuse to switch back to a bagged vacuum after I got my first bagless vacuum. I have experience with both types and for me its NEVER AGAIN for overpriced vacuums which force me to buy bags and spend half an hour untangling hair every week.
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums Год назад
@Frenchfrys17, here we go with the fluffy roller argument again. Also, Shark has the Stratos on sale for $299, but if you buy it literally anywhere else right now (Target, Wal Mart, BB&B) it will cost $499. Call consumers a brainlet if you want to, but last I checked Target was sold out some SOMEONE is buying them at that price. While I don't work with ZeroG at all, they will last LONG after the Shark has been sent to the landfill. They are like apples and oranges.
@blakaeg

@@Frenchfrys17Ummm excuse me, but bagged vacuum cleaners are so much more hygienic to empty when it comes to disposing of the dust!! Have fine dust flying around in my small UK apartment when I need to empty the machine, NO THANKS!! Also how hard is it to slide out the brush and pull off the hair when it’s needed, like on a SEBO, it’s not rocket science or a difficult task!! I was fed up of the time it took to wash and dry the filters on my Dyson EVERY month as the filter clogged not to mention how disgusting it was to empty when the dust needed to be pulled out when it wouldn’t come out. The SEBO Felix I have night need to have hair snipped off the easily removable brush roller where I can be done in 5 mins vs the 24 hours plus inconvenience of washing filters and waiting for them to dry in the bag less machine.
@Frenchfrys17
@Frenchfrys17 Год назад
@@blakaeg When I was a child there were several instances were I spent half an hour pulling hair out of our old vaccum. That same vacuum later died because the motor died from the brush roll jamming up with hair. There is very little you can do to persuade me to go back to doing that. I don’t know about Dyson, but cleaning the Sharks filters and bin is a 20 second task. And I empty the bin outside, never inside the house.

If you buy from Shark directly there will be consistent promotions for lower prices. However, if a customer unknowingly purchases from Target, BB&B, etc. They will end up paying true retail. Even today, on Cyber Monday, Target's price $399 on "sale" with a regular price of $497. There is a huge difference of value proposition with a $100-200 gap in pricing. Cheers!

Shark spends the money on commercials not quality. Buy a bagged vacuum they last longer. They can also be repaired if needed . Shark vacuums you can buy filters if you don't get the wrong ones. They make so many different models . Ask yourself why not make 1 model if they are so good. 🤷 I unclog and service more Sharks ,Dysons and Bissels than I do vacuums with bags. Buy a German Sebo vacuum . All models with bags. They last a long long time.
