Citizen Eco-Drive Tough. For me, best and toughest watch I've ever owned. No battery, no winding, seriously abused and still going strong after 10 years. Works off any light, can keep going for up to 6 months in complete darkness, 200 metre waterproof, excellent 5 year warranty, £110, military spec. Absolutely incredible.

My great grandmother lived in the now-former Hamilton Watch factory for 20 years. It is now a condominium building, but they retained a lot of the old architecture and there is a miniature museum in the lobby which displays the history of Hamilton Watch. She moved to a retirement home about 2 years ago, she is now 93, but I cherish the time spent there, I remember running down the halls to see her, and there is still a faint but distinct factory smell that lingers in the halls. The watch factory still stands on the outskirts of Lancaster city, PA. In fact I live about 10 minutes from there. If you ever find yourself in Lancaster, PA, be sure to take a drive past and see it.

Gotta admit in the beginning of the video, I was thinking best watch for the money, skip the Marathon and Omega, no thanks for the G shocks, especially the new models, they are so ugly and the rubber straps make you sweat like heck. Just buy a Hamilton. Back in 1981 I was Army SF and was issued a Hamilton field watch. Manual wind, no date feature. I wore that watch everyday for over 30 years before the main spring finally wore out. It still works even now, it just doesn't run as long, but is still accurate. I cracked the crystal during a parachute malfunction back in '89 and never replaced it. It was near the edge and didn't effect the time keeping so what the heck. It was going to be a $100 for a new mainspring and $75 for a crystal replacement, so I bought another Hamilton Khaki for $225 instead. It is the most reliable watch I've ever owned. Because of it, I began collecting antique Hamilton Pocket watches. The pride and joy is a 1907 924 movement in a rose gold case. It's 110 years old and keeps time as good as my iPhone. Original owner was a conductor on a railroad in Pennsylvania. I bought it from his granddaughter after his death. It's an amazing piece of machinery. And inside the back is so beautiful , a true piece of art. Love your channel, keep it up!

Bigfoot in Germany should not cost that much for those parts to be honest. I am a watch maker and those parts cost at most $60 total.

with the Zulu strap, try feeding it back through one of the double rings, like a motorcycle helmet strap, before putting around wrist and doing up. it transfers any wristband tension into that second strap and takes it off the main band where it is holding the watch.

Read the title and immediately thought "Hamilton". Glad to see I was right. Hamilton Khaki Field was my first "expensive" watch. Glad to see them getting recognition from you. Hamilton gives you the best "bang for your buck" automatics/mechanicals I think. Except *maybe* Seiko, but those tend to be less accurate in my experience and most models don't have a sapphire crystal so they get scuffed pretty easily.

I actually quite like pocket watches, even though they are a bit of an eccentricity. I find that having my watch in my pocket instead of my wrist while working lets my wrist get into places that may be too small for my wrist with a watch. It also helps me to prevent breakage, which has happened to me several times.
@captbrody5036
@captbrody5036 7 лет назад
Call me old fashion but I prefer a pocket watch. I have tried, and broken so many wrist watches. Lost a lot money with wrist watches. Once I started using pocket watches I found that I preferred them for lots of reasons. All my pants, except my dress pants, have a 5th pocket on them. I believe the 5th pocket was originally called a watch pocket. So pocket watches work well for me.

G-Shock solar AWG-101 works for me. It's tough, dependable, easy to read, never needs batteries (6 years and still going) or winding, no servicing, only a little sun every few months. The band is important -- I use the same band you described and I am glad I replaced the factory watch band which broke after a couple years. Another watch I like is made by Traser. (I own the Traser H3) They have many classic watches and many are sub-$300. Every man has his own requirements and choosing a watch really is a personal experience.

A watch doesn't simply tell you the time, it tells you how much you value your time. That's why a lot of people get expensive watches. Another thing is that they look for good craftsmanship. If you want something durable, well-made, in-house movement and good craftsmanship behind it, then no doubt Seiko is the right choice. Reasonable price, automatic movement, durable, elegant, simple and well-made. I own a Seiko and I can't be happier with it. Japanese watchmakers really do make great timepieces.

Currently wearing my "beater" watch, an Invicta automatic titanium pro diver with a seiko nh35 movement, with a green nato band and clip on compass accessory. Waterproof 200meters. Takes everything I throw at it. I'm hard on equipment too. I swap this out with my seiko big tuna automatic Steeldive Chinese clone which is the best watch I ever had. 300meter Waterproof, keeps perfect time. Again with a real seiko nh35 movement, sapphire crystal.A $300 clone of a $3000 watch. On a seiko rubber band. Bought a frame off rebuilt f150 for the $2700 I saved...love that too!

I was devastated when it happened. I have bought a cheap replacement until I decide on a new watch in the price range of this video.

A watch movement is considered Swiss if: the movement has been assembled in Switzerland and, the movement has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland and; the components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly. From 1 January 2017, the law set the minimum at 60 percent. If a watch movement is intended for export and will not be cased-up in Switzerland, but it otherwise meets the criteria to be considered a Swiss movement, the watch may say "Swiss Movement" but it may not say Swiss Made on the watch case or dial. A watch that says "Swiss Quartz" is considered to be a proper Swiss watch. However, it is often improperly used by foreign manufacturers to merely indicate that the quartz movement is of Swiss origin

Love my hamilton khaki mechanical! Great choise but I wouldn't trust its water resistance too much. If you want great water resistance, toughness and lume in a smaller watch you may want to consider a seiko skx013. Ps: Just 50% of the value of the movement needs to be swiss made in order to get the swiss made label.

Years back when I serviced military aircraft, wearing a watch while working was a no no. Instead we carried a pocket watch. I liked it! Later on, when I did a lot of plumbing (family business), I wore a simple Casio digital that took a beating and kept on...processing. Then for a time I wore a rugged Soviet built manual wind submariner watch that lasted forever, but I stopped wearing it when the beautiful blue face faded in the CA sun. My three current go-to watches are: A brushed chrome Chase Durer pilot chronograph that I love. It has an alarm, and I swapped out the sweaty rubber-like band for a brushed chrome Timex metal band that doesn't pinch my wrist hair. Most importantly, it has a deep blue face with large white glow-in-the-dark hands that are easy to see at a glance. I've owned it for 10 years now and other than a new battery every two years or so, it has been wonderful. The alternate for when I spend time outside at night (or when the battery is dead on my pilot chronograph) I wear a Timex Indiglo Expedition with alarm. It's white face with dark hands are easy to see, and the manual set alarm is precise down to 5 seconds. At the press of a button the face lights up for easy reading in the dark. My dress watch is a chrome body Citizen solar (Eco Drive) with black face and white hands. I could leave the Citizen alone for months with barely any light and it stays precise. The Chase Durer was just under $300, the Timex was around $50, and the Citizen was $85.

I still have it on it's 4th band or so but don't wear it anylonger. I updated to the more modern version a couple of years ago but still prefer my old Luminox dial in a stainless steel case. I had to smile at the Toyota Camry reference...although we're doing better in an industry we owned for 50+ years, it always amazes me to remember how a tiny little country could turn that industry upside down over night. Had a Seiko automatic watch I bought used from of watch repair shop back in the 70's. I loved the watch but it failed. So I took it back to the watch repairman I purchased it from and he repaired it for free. And it failed again!! Come to find out, I was driving diesel tow trucks at the time and the vibration coming through the steering wheel was winding the watch so tight that it would stop running. I love your watch band that keeps the metal away from the skin which is great for people with allergies to metals.

This video came out right after my luminox broke and boy was I upset. I spent a pretty penny on that watch thinking it would survive more than a year but I guess I was wrong. Live and learn. But I took your advice and got a hamilton and while I am only three weeks in I can already see the quality specifically in the glass. I have a bad habit of really putting my stiff through its paces and the glass on this watch is unbelievably scratch resistant. I think Ill only get hamilton watches from now on. The quality is unreal, the look is classic and clean, the movement is accurate and the morning ritual of winding the watch is a great way to start the day.

I went with a Timex Expedition because I also liked the simple look. So hard to find a smart looking watch. All black plastic and white face. I ground, welded, and hammered steel for 15 years with it. It's still working flawlessly. Remember putting one battery in it. Keeps near perfect time. Tossed the band at purchase and went with the Timex nylon hook and loop strap. Blacked out the logos with a sharpie. That strap has to be the most comfortable in the world. It's slightly wider than the watch and protects the stem. Maybe I was just lucky...but I am on my second one now. Can't remember what happened to the first one but it performed just as well. Got my last one 20 years ago. A watch has to be light when you are slinging and pounding. Proud of the performance of these simple things. After sitting in the drawer for 5 years it was off by maybe one minute. No kidding.

I was issued a G Shock by the USN because I was required to do many tasks based on time. I had to purchase my own uniforms but they bought me a time piece. When I got out of the service I worked underground construction in a ditch and promptly destroyed the Casio. I switched to a pocket watch style because a wrist watch was in a bad location. I got a Remington pocket style watch. It had a standard watch band pin holding the spring clip clasp to the watch. That pin broke and I managed to load the watch up in the snow pile and hauling it out to the melting pile. The watch stayed in the snow for 3 months and I went out and found it in the spring. The leather cover was waterlogged but the time piece was still correct time and no water inflitration. I am still using the Remington after 20 years. it cost me less than 35 bucks.

My first watch I bought when I went off to Basic Training in 1986 was a G-Shock. All black rubber. What a great watch. My father liked it a lot o I gave it to him. I remember paying 22.- in the PX. I then bought myself a new one and wore it for many, many years till it broke on a parachute jump once or a live fire. But it broke. I today wear a Luminox, and I have an Omega Seamaster. I use a Zulu watch bracelette for my Luminox, because the standard bracelettes are bad, have to change every year if you didn't lose your watch when they failed. My Omega I never wear as it's too heavy. I went out an bought a standard leather band for it, because the metal band adds to the weight, and is too tight or too loose depending on the setting. I want a dress watch and I like this Hamilton Khaki. Very nice.

I think my first watch was an LED watch. I don't know the brand but it said, "Made in Japan." Then my mom ordered me a Starkist Tuna watch that was wind-up. Then I got my first Casio, the melody-alarm (?) that played my birthday. My mom was always surprising me with a new watch as she snuck my beat-up melody alarm into the trash! My third Casio was a "Swordfish(?)." My fourth Casio had a circular depth gauge and used on my first dive. My fourth Casio was analog-quartz with an LCD display and a timing-bezel which took me awhile to figure out. My first (and so-far only) Swiss watch was a quartz TAG Heuer 1000 which I got in 1990 and is still running and is tough as nails. It has seen more than a dozen SCUBA dives. Too bad I never got into Swatches. I currently sport a FrankenSeiko PsuodoScubapro which was $90 from the Philippines. My dad's (Rest his soul) Hamilton wind-up found it's way to me after he died. I keep it locked up. He had a Rolex but it was "stripped of parts" when he took it to a sketchy watch-servicer and so it was worthless (what I think is that the guy lied to him about stripping the watch, hoping my dad would let him have it rather than pay the high bill). People are animals sometimes. He was even a patient of my dad's! I would have called the cops. But then again, back then the cops down here in deep South TX were worse than the criminals.

I love the Hamilton field watch! There is something to it's simple timeless beauty: in the frenzy of everyday life, it is very calming for me. Just a note though: It takes a 20mm band, not a 22mm. Maybe they changed it over the years or something, but mine is definitely a 20mm. Potential buyers may want to double-check and verify the band sizing for themselves or just try the band it comes with, which is quite good (if a bit stiff at first and lacking the extra security of the Zulu band.)

I have a Marathon TSAR that I've been wearing every day for 5 years. It's been beat up in HMMVs, knocked against weapon lockers, hit the ground with me on top of it. It's been in the ocean and spent lots of time underwater and in the rain. You can't kill this watch. I've had to have one tritium vial re-glued that cost me $10 and then I replaced the battery this year for the first time. I bought the watch used so I don't know how old the battery was. Still 4 years from 1 battery is insane. This watch isn't too big for daily wear at all. I will say it interferes with putting gloves on though due to case height.

Yes! I wasn't a watch wearer for a long time... I bought a Hamilton khaki automatic. I absolutely love it. Now, I leave my phone in my pocket a lot more. Fantastic watch, great video, love your channel. Take care!

I am a pretty big guy and I like the larger sized watches my wife picked me up a diesel dz4282 from a pawn shop for around $30 that was like new and I fell in love with the large bezel watches I have worn it as a knock around and it has been the toughest watch I've ever seen I have a buddy at work that swears by the invicta watches but only the ones with the Swiss movement they have so many different sizes and models that it is mind boggling and the prices are incredible for the reviews they receive

I have the Grand Diver with Automatic Japanese movement and it is a good watch, good looking, tough, appears to be a really good watch. I wear it every day even though I have a Tag and a Hamilton that I could be wearing.

Totally agree on the general watch philosophy -- I did have a cheapo $40 Timex specifically purchased for the classic, high contrast analog dial, like a school wall clock, that I could read easily without glasses. It held up for a few years until I forgot it at a friends house and the kids got ahold of it and managed to stop it from ticking. That Hamilton looks to be about ideal balance price, quality and function. Heavy outdoors use puts an expensive watch at risk, which ruins the experience for me.

My Timex Expedition worked perfectly for about 2 weeks before the indiglo light went out. no big deal, the hands still were glow in the dark. then the cheap leather band broke while I was on a rope in a tree and it fell to the ground, shattering. My other watch was a $17 Army/Navy store watch that I expected to replace in 6 months max, lasted me 3 years. Both were simple analog and both were functional. However, I have found the need for a better higher end (for me) watch. Thanks for turning me on to the Hamilton Watch and the Zulu bands.

I'm a fan of my Bertucci A2-T. Pretty low profile solid titanium case so it's nice and light, replaceable 1 piece bands, just a simple field watch with the date, but it's all I need.

Went through a similar progression but no high end watches. I settled on the Timex Expedition series. After a year of beating it up it seems to be lasting like my g-shock.

I have a Tissot pr100 automatic. It's a great watch. Going on three years with no issues or time deviations. The seiko monster is another sweet watch for the money. It's an automatic divers watch. Automatic watches are so cool. There are a lot of watches that are well over a hundred years old, and they're still working to this day.

A nursing home worker has my father's 17 jewel Bulova Gold watch. it went "missing" right before his death in 91. it survived WWll and a 40 year career climbing ladders and washing brushes with turpentine. he warned me afterwards not to put too much emotional stock in watches, jewelry or people who we're supposed to trust. I have made due with $25 timex analogs ever since. perfect time and no drama when replacement became necessary after a few battery changes.

I'm 26 years Navy. I bought my G-Shock and most guys I know buy them because they are inexpensive and available at the Navy Exchange (Navy department store). We get these or Timex. As we get older and move up in rank we buy Seiko and Citizen but usually go back to the inexpensive watches for deployment.

I didn't read all the comments, so please forgive me if I am repeating someone else. I received in the mail a couple of months ago, from Russia, my new Vostok Amphibian. I wanted the Hamilton khaki originally but can't afford one and wouldn't for awhile. So after much searching I choose the Vostok. I am hands down impressed with the functionality and quality. Not in the aspect of fine Swiss watches. I don't own any that can give a good representation. I have worn out several Timex type watches, which are obviously crap. They are not water proof at all whether they say they are or not. I am very active and constantly doing things that are very rough on any mechanical time piece. I use a 4 lb. hammer at my day job, work on my car, sweat gallons, swim with my kids ext.... Vostok is cheap for price and has not failed. And I don't expect will. The fact that most people regard dropping anything less than $100 as chump change I would say try it. I think it will easily compete with both of your favorites in this video. The looks of the watch are definitely not my favorite style. I much prefer the simplicity of the Hamilton style. None the less I am would buy it again even though I don't like the way it looks because it works for the use that it was bought for.

1) swiss made is now 60 (going to 70) % and inc testing, assembly and promotion so swiss watches still have a huge 'foreign' made components or they would cost 2-5 times the cost 2) you only need to service when it needs servicing, sometimes its 20 years! They can also be serviced by your local watch guy for $40-80 + parts required, the exception is the new 'in house movements ~ great video

For what it's worth, I've been wearing a Invicta Men's 9110 Pro Diver Collection Automatic Watch (with a Zulu band per your recommendation) for 3 years and found it to be plenty reliable and rugged for a $100 watch. It's about the cheapest self-winding watch on Amazon, which is why I got it.

I gotta say , that hamilton khaki field is probably your best bet , swiss made mechanical watch at under 300. Brand new that is. Under 200, and I would probably go with the blue Citizen promaster diver eco drive.Extremely robust , accurate , solar powered , 200m water resistance , and impeccable finishing for the price. Nice video , Sir.

I know this video is old...but stumbled across it. I have several Hamilton Automatics...best Swiss watches for the price. Another really good affordable watch for EDC is Seiko SNZG13 (Automatic) - remove the bracelet (not good). Put your Zulu band on it and you’ve got a great watch for $160. Great review!

The g shock at the start is the DW5200 Hero, the second g shock (the ice hockey puck watch!) is it not? Came out in 1984, I do believe, that's when I got it, I'll never sell it, it's been everywhere with me, a brilliant timepiece!

I have a Citizen Nigthhawk solar powered titanium watch. No batteries, analog and very light. Really like it, it's one of my favorites among all the watches I own. One thing I would recommend is a watch with a sapphire crystal, which is near indestructible. Sector makes pretty good, relatively cheap watches.

Thanks for the video! I agree with your feeling about digital and analog watches. One of the reasons I deserted watches is I didn't like digitals, and I didn't want to pay for an analog watch that I wouldn't tear up. I won a Garmin Fenix 2 and it's made me want to wear a watch everyday again for the first time in 15 years. I've worn it almost daily for almost 2 years. One thing I really like about the Fenix2 is it has a digital second hand and I can make the time large and readable. I'm rough on watches just because I'm clumsy and bang them on things all the time. I use the GPS waypoints and routing a lot when I'm hunting and hiking. I also run and bike so I do a lot of activity tracking with this also. The Fenix2 has a sapphire crystal face and it's held up well. As far as battery life 1-2 hours charges it fully. Just as a watch it lasts from 1-2 weeks, but if I enable phone notifications I only get a day. When I use it as a watch hunting and using it to navigate I still get 4-5 days. I live near the AT so I keep all the AT shelter waypoints in my watch just in case. It is large on your wrist, but the face and utility of it made it worthwhile to me, I think the Fenix3 is thinner. The buttons are large, but there is a key lock that works well and it still is readable when needed. www.jebiga.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/GARMIN_FENIX_2_002.jpg They have replaced the Fenix 2 with the Fenix 3. buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/f%C4%93nix/wearables/c10002-bBRAND473-p1.html You can still get the Fenix2 g.factoryoutletstore.com/details/182685/garmin-fenix2.html?category_id=29710

Bertucci watches, very similar to your Hamilton. I have had mine for almost 8 years, been through 3 deployments overseas in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Worn every day at work and at home. Solid body titanium construction and Swiss movement. They make base models all the way up to self winding with sapphire glass.

I loved this video! I own eight watches, but my two favorites are my Victorinox Maverick I received as my very first fathers day gift, shortly after my daughter was born. I will keep it forever, and hopefully pass it down. My other favorite is my G-Shock Solar. I purchased it at the beginning of my career, and have worn it everyday at work for the past nine years, without issue. A good watch is a special thing, and I may have to look into Hamilton for my next one.

Thanks Cody, I've been through the same trials, and agree completely! I don't remember where I first read/heard it, but years ago I came upon words that rang so true and explained why an analog watch will always be my go-to. I, as a gear head, love digital watches and all their whiz bang functions. I like accuracy, I like thermometers and barometers and altimeters and GPS Lat/Lon. That's function, and that's bang for my buck. That's massive information. But that's not necessarily so good. As I access all the available digital data from my timepiece, I'm missing something much more daily important and comforting. Relativity. A digital display of 15:16 is only that display of what time it is. Informative, yes, but it lacks much of the relativity of the day. If I have an analog watch with a face and hands, and I look at it at the same time, 3:15 pm, I get the same time information, but... I also have a visual reference of how much of my day is gone, how much I have left. I have a chart of where I am in my day, and at least to me, that's comforting. It's nice to look at the hands and say/see that I'm half-way through, or to see the hands during a hard day graphically show me that I'm just a tiny bit away from being home in comparison to the whole day. Analog is just simply more organic, relevant, and relative.

Seiko 6139. The first (to market) automatic chronograph. My dad has a 1969 Hong Kong market example (first year) and while it isn't pretty (mainly needs a new crystal and the hands cleaned), it still works though it hasn't been serviced in 30 years.

be careful kiddo a lot of people fall foul of the " i just need/want 1 more watch with a specific look" trap and then you find yourself with 19 of the silly things. if you want a plain gshock try the g8000 in black its one of the smaller gshocks. if you want an automatic try the the seiko skx007 its a clasic dive watch with a fantastic reputation. love the channel keep up the good work
