In this video, I take the Phantom 85 out for a ride on the gravel back roads. The engine kicks the bucket around mile number eight when it gets hot and seizes up.

@@pulsar2121 I think it deserves a rebuild. Though I gotta say, your local terrain isn't very suitable for these little two strokes. Without active cooling, and every stroke a power stroke you will eventually melt any piston you put in there.

They recommend using 20:1 during break in and 25:1 after break in I would stick it 25:1
@davidglobak
@davidglobak Год назад
Bro,it was a bad move to put smaller wheel,sure more torque and lower speed,but then there would be less airflow,high rpm’s are a no go,and never go above 32/1.The phantoms are best when on a small sprocket and pulling on medium speeds.This was still a good test to see how much the phantom could put up,best luck to you,and hope to see another 80 cc video

Also, in all respects to what it is, you can kill any two stroke bicycle on land like you have. That bikes meant to do 25 mph comfortably. And im 230 lbs. Wide open land with wide open throttle is a two stroke death sentence.

I know the phantoms have some design flaws but they are air cooled engines. Running that small rear wheel reduced the amount of cooling it would have had with a 26" wheel. I would like to know what fuel ratio you were running and how the carburetor was tuned.
@pulsar2121
@pulsar2121 Год назад
The carburetor was left at the out of the box tune. The only adjustment I made was the idle air speed. Mix ratio was 40:1 with Polaris full-synthetic 2-cycle oil. As with any gear change that results in higher RPMs, undoubtedly, it accelerated the wear of the engine. The bike was just unsuitable for my use case with the 22MPH clutch engagement speed of the 44T sprocket on the 26" wheel.
@PapaFrizArcade
@PapaFrizArcade Год назад
@@pulsar2121 Um, ZTMoto recommends 20:1 for break-in then 25:1 thereafter. Running this engine at 40:1 certainly contributed to it's demise. Deciding to run WOT with a reduced size wheel and a large sprocket contributed... You killed that engine... it didn't die...
@PapaFrizArcade
@PapaFrizArcade Год назад
Oh... and I always recommend including an on-board temperature sensor on these builds. Knowing you were running 400 degrees would have saved the engine. They are pretty cheap too. I use a computer that senses temps as well as RPM... it cost about 35 bucks... much cheaper than an engine.
@PapaFrizArcade
@PapaFrizArcade Год назад
@@pulsar2121 I find this statement strange. I rock a 36T sprocket... and I can cruise at 17-18mph without issue. I can only imagine a 44T sprocket would result in a slow cruise around 14mph or so. This is also with a 26" rim. Was the idle THAT high?
@joebrown967

@michaelbrinks8089
@michaelbrinks8089 Год назад
Any idea why it overheated? Is it just a defective engine/head design? Running to lean? Maybe it sprung an air leak on the intake causing it to lean way out? I'm glad I never bought a Phantom.... I seen a Runleader digital temp./tach gauge with adjustable temp alarm setting for $25.......That $25 gauge could have saved this engine. After watching this video, a temp gauge would be the 1st thing I'd buy if I had a Phantom85. I'm tired of wearing out back bike tires so fast, so I'm gonna try something that'll either be stupid or brilliant. I found some discarded Micky Thomson dirt track car racing tires with no steel belts inside the tread. I'm gonna cut some narrow strips out of them & glue the rubber on a bald bike tire. Clean each with solvent real good & use rubber tire glue. If it doesn't work, I'll only be out some time & $3 in glue. If the glue holds, I'll have some bike tires that, #1 last way longer #2 more flat resistant #3 can handle the hot summer blacktop road temps without getting soft & melting.

phantoms are junk right from the start . but i feel that most of the little bike motors are pretty junky . they last for years if you dont ride them lol . i guess its all in how you ride them some last alot longer then others . i think the key to even the ones that last is not to let them get to hot . there just not built to last . four stroke engines are really the way to go if you want something that will last and be dependable . but there are cons and pros for both .
@pulsar2121

Agreed. Two strokes are light and easy to just bolt-on and go and I love them for that, but at the same time having a dedicated lubrication system separate from the fueling is the dependable option.
