Today’s feature is a former high school star that was too good in both Football and basketball to have the success he could’ve at either sport. The gift and the curse of being talented in multiple areas, is it gives you options when one lane may not be going or may not go as planned, so you can always find another passion in something else, but it hinders you from accomplishing all you could’ve had you put 100% instead of 50% of that energy mentally and physically in 1 focus. Ronald Curry is the perfect example, not deciding the sport he wanted to focus 100% of his energy on until it was too late and he became not even half of what his potential said he could, had he chose earlier what direction to take. Imagine Ronald Curry stuck to basketball instead of football or vice versa. He was a Mc’Donald’s all American in basketball in high school, winning the week’s slam dunk contest and the game MVP as well, in a game that had 3 players enter the NBA draft instead attending college. On the football side Ronald was arguably even better. He was seen by many as the best high school prospect of all time on the football field. It would take him the next 4 years and much disappointment to decide which way to go, leading to a moderately successful career in the NFL, when it was clear the NBA wasn’t in his future. He was too good to choose one sport, and it led to his growth being stunted in both. The Player Too Good For Success! Ronald Curry Stunted Growth

Greatest high school player I’ve ever seen. Was responsible one year for something like 77 TD’s. I don’t remember exactly the breakdown, but he passed for about 40 TD’s, and scored the rest mostly rushing, but also on punt and interception returns. He and Michael Vick were untackleable their senior year in those allstar game practices. Unbelievable talent.

This is one of those situations where I'm glad not only did you have HOF ballers talking about how raw he was at two sports he still ironed out a pretty good career in spite of not committing to one early versus seeing a guy flame out after hearing how good he was at one particular sport (Lenny Cooke, Jamarcus, Ryan Leaf, etc). Also, if Mack Brown had stayed around at UNC by the time Ronald Curry and Julius Peppers had come, Curry might have had been better developed for the NFL than he was.

I went to Hampton University out in VA for some time. Ended up meeting quite a few dudes at that school who were actually from Virginia who often expressed how much they looked up to Ronald Curry. They were calling him the greatest athlete to ever come out of Virginia. So, without a doubt, he definitely had that respect. To them, he was practically royalty. Actually saw his McDonalds All-American performances in both the dunk contest and game on live television back in those late 90’s. So, his name was one I knew of a bit early on. Once again, personally knowing how much he meant to his home state, I can’t give nothing but respect to Ronald Curry

Curry was the undisputed Man in HS but my cousin played in the VA AllStar game as a receiver where Curry was the well-deserved featured King of Everything. After the first practice Cuzzo told me to watch out for a relatively unknown prospect who threw spirals so tight they were impossible to catch with hands only. A few months later we all knew this dude as Mike Vick from Virginia Tech. There were so many serious dual-threat ballers from that area like Iverson, Bobby Blizzard (real name), Sean Hamlet, Mario & Melvin Haskett and many others. Can’t forget Peninsula Legends Lawrence Taylor, Al Toon and Mike Tomlin.

Best way is focusing on one sport and having a sports academy something US leagues refuse to do. Football is the only sport it’s not needed as much as it relies on tools (strength, speed, agility etc.) more than skill. But for the sake of the QB it’s still needed. He would have been a dominant baseball player. That arm strength and athleticism. An elite shortstop or center fielder with extreme power.

He was even a better person than he was an athlete. He’ll be a great head coach some day, either in the NFL or in college! UNC was a really tough place for any 2-sport athlete. If he had gone to a place like Wake Forest, they could have developed him in to an NBA point guard. UNC was loaded in basketball with former high school legends. And he wouldn’t have had to endure 4 different offensive co-ordinators in college! He would have played QB in the NFL!

For many people being too good at football and basketball is a curse. Its all good in high school, but in college, you pick one or fail at both.

He made the right choice to play football i was playing college basketball in VA around that time he was just a big guard nothing more nothing less

Fair but let's remember that was while having to split time and focus on football one has to ask how good a basketball player he would have turned out to be had he put all his dedication and focus on hoop

@@bonesbrigantenaw. OP is right. My man was 6-2 200+ at PG. I played bball in VA at point around the same time and it wasn't many points that size in VA at the time.

Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders didn't pick one sport over another and they were just fine. Being almost good enough and actually being good enough are two different things.

Even with the achilles and foot problems he was still athletic that shows if he would've choose 1 sport instead overworking his body in 2 he could've had a much longer career
