I think I can answer that question as to why Plini is catching on - they are a nice balance of the guitar shred style, traditional progressive melody and technicality (Genesis, Rush, Kansas) but done with a modern sensibility and the right amount of metal crunch. Hell of a sweet spot, love to listen to it while I work.
@thesphericalguy9018

My favorite thing about Plini is that he seems like a song-writer/composer, first, and shredder, second. What I mean is that his music always makes me feel something before it makes me think. That's a remarkable gift, and I'm glad that Rick's initial video about Electric Sunrise brought Plini to my attention. I also appreciate how self-deprecating and unassuming the whole Plini gang is. They seem like good guys!

I've watched Rick for a while now, during live streams and the talks with Rhett and Dave you can tell he is happy with what he's doing, but in this video you can really see the joy and passion he has for the whole craft. In most of the videos he seems like an educator, but here he looks like a kid at Christmas, and you can see what has driven him to do all this. So nice to see.

@Rick Beato I think one of the reasons that instrumental guitar music is doing so well these days is because, for want of a better way of putting it, it's a push back against the mainstream music of today. Sonically, in terms of sound design and production, modern pop records sound amazing a lot of the time. But in terms of melody, harmony and rhythmic structures, it is oversimplified and generic. 3 note melodies, sometimes less, basic generic chord progressions, drum patterns that are almost like tropes at this stage (besides 4/4 kicks, I'm thinking dembow rhythms and half time trap beats specifically) There is genuine complexity in instrumental music, as well as solos and technique it requires the song to be carried by a strong melody as there are no obvious words coming out of a pretty face, its harmonically interesting, even the drumming on these albums is top notch. Basically, I think a lot of people are tired of hearing the same songs reiterated in the same way 50 times in one year, and being treated like mindless consumers and are looking for, and finding, something that speaks to them.

The popularity of modern progressive rock right now is, to me, an evolution of the popularity of EDM and electro. Where EDM has got kinda stale it’s been refreshed by guitars with more authentic sounds and actual performances. I think you could argue EDM in general created more people interested in instrumental music as well.

Shredders today are way cooler than they were in the 80’s a lot of those guys had a superiority complex. Glad to see laid back shredders!!

I think a lot of it comes down to the status of rock. Back in the 80s rock music was topping the charts, pretty much every band was representing this larger than life, cocky, womanizing type of image. It made absolute sense for shredders to market themselves as the superlative of those guys. Rock is in a very different place right now. Pretty much all rock music is happening in a space that would have been considered "the underground" in the 80s and 90s. Artists are much closer to the fans, they got to become more human in that process.

Adanedhel - I was really talking about the shred scene as a whole. Most of what was on the radio wasn’t shred. The guitarists who were in bands that weren’t even signed or only famous in their towns tended to be jerks and often would make fun of guitarists who onstage because they didn’t play the prerequisite amount of arpeggios or even “shredding” properly. It was crazy to watch. Don’t get me wrong , there were some good guys who helped rookie guitarists but they were few and far in between.

I don't know. I met many of the shredders from back in the day. Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine, Steve Morse, etc. All of them were super cool. Yngwie...ok...I'll give you that one.

SkullBits - I was talking more about the local shredders. I’ve met all those guys too and they were all cool. I even got to meet Jason Becker who was super cool. In the Bay Area every shredder was “almost” signed by Shrapnel Records. Lol

Spongebob Squareballs - Shredders back in the day weren’t as popular as Radio Rock bands of whom you were describing. They were on smaller record labels and drew decent club sized crowds but not arenas like the bands on the big labels. Shredders were true guitar nerds. Glam bands and the metal bands on the radio weren’t as technically proficient as shredders. It wasn’t until Yngwie, Vai and Paul Gilbert got into Big record deals is when what was considered shred showed up on the air waves.

Rick, just an observation... During interviews, I think that one of your best skills is the restraint you show to not step on the speaker after you’ve asked a question. You really do a good job of letting them fully answer without interruption... you are like a drummer that doesn’t rush the fill to get to the 1! I don’t know where you got that from, but it’s awesome.

I don't understand why Plini's music sounds so hopeful to me. I'm so happy to see them today in Charlotte. And as usual, thank you Rick.

a lot of it is lydian, chords that feel like they're always leading upward and not resolving!
@8varium5
@8varium5 4 года назад
@@ScottBrunelleMusic I think it's more than that, maybe the timbre chosen too? a lot of reverb (good reverb) and even the occasional change on the snare. To me, listening to Plini is really emotional. But, yeah! Lydian too.

Aside from the lydian effect it is also as what simon said in the interview.. Plini's guitar playing has this sense sounding vocally..

My 2¢: The reason why instrumental guitar-driven music is popular now might have to do with technology and the ability to learn SO many things quickly (RU-vid channels like this one), and also gaming. Most kids and young adults nowadays grew up with Guitar Hero and games like that, which have helped kids/adults develop their hand/eye/ear coordination much faster. At least that might be part of it IMO
@kevinblaz6608
@kevinblaz6608 4 года назад
Exactly, plus with the internet providing information to learn things quickly, comes easier recording. Thanks to the internet, many musicians (especially guitarists) are now able to create music from home with ease and plugins like Plini’s Archetype are big steps towards impeccably realistic guitar tones.

Pretty cool interview Rick. I would love to see more in-studio interviews with other bands like Periphery and the like going forward, in a format like your "What makes this song great?" series. A screen capture of the tone shaping on the Fractal or any other modeler/plug in would be cool feature for next time as well. Thanks for taking the time to create exposure for great bands and as always, for your overall informative and enjoyable content.
