Mikey Aurelius H ~ Good point, Sting’s roots are far from London. Similar to how I used to live in a seaport in the far north corner of California- almost in Oregon, where it’s much different. I didn’t get there on my trip through England and Scotland, but I’m familiar of Newcastle from movies based on Catherine Cookson novels. Netflix used to have them, so I did a deep dive and saw them all. Now I watch them periodically on RU-vid for that wholesome older -world sensibility they have. In fact I’m halfway through another round right now, still loving the great stories and the backdrop of your nice region!

@@thomascanfield9165 That's very interesting, glad you were able to visit UK. I live within 2 miles of where Cookson lived (though about 8 decades apart!) and things have changed a lot around here, mostly for the better though, there is a lot less coal and polution, South Shields has great seaside. also much history. Jarrow is where St Bede lived and wrote the first book to ever to be penned in (Verrie Olde!) English language. Yes sometimes provincial places have a more genuine and sensible atmosphere.

The Police are one of the greatest bands of all time. Just short lived. Mid 70's to early 80's. Every album is great. They come from England. Every little thing she does is magic is possibly their best, but there are many other songs that contend. It's a rabbit hole you won't regret. The drummer is one of the best in rock. And Sting, bass/keyboards/vocals (and main songwriter) is one of the true icons of pop-rock.

Sure, I like lots of other great drummers, but when you hear any track he plays on, you know instantly who it is behind the kit. I think that's what makes him so great.

@@michaelairley2015 @Michael Airley Well, at least we've gone down by 200. I'm no Jazz fan, so it's all pretty subjective I think, but I'm sure there are many great, unrecognised drummers that went before. For me personally, I love Stewart's energy and style. The fact that his style so easily identifies him from many other drummers is a stand out for me. It certainly made a big contribution to the sound of the Police, and in someways, that's an achievement too for any drummer. Rest assured though, I will start digging into the Jazz though. Always happy to be educated musically.

Love the Police because they were not afraid to use a bit of reggae in some of their songs and Stuart Copeland always gave props to reggae music. Love reggae so sad that the big music industry labels chose to ignore it when it was as its best 1970s to 1990s. Jamaica for a tiny country had such an abundance of musicians and output of music. Maybe one day they will get the recognition they deserve.

I remember when this came out... I was a kid but was old enough to understand that this sound was a game changer. Stewart Copeland (the drummer) was known for the off-beat (I don't know the musical term) in his drumming and the snare sound. It was kind of reggae but not -- entirely fresh and exciting. Nobody (white) ever really played like that. He then went on to become a drumming legend in his own right. Thanks for the great reaction!

He often cites Arabic beats as an influence too from his time growing up in Lebanon. Same here. First time I heard Roxanne on the radio, I knew this was the band for me. All three members of The Police have had incredibly interesting careers. The drummer, Stewart Copeland, is American but spent his formative years in Beirut where he first took up drumming. He has written operas, TV and film scores, and video game music. Andy Summers is an accomplished photographer and has an extensive catalog of solo recordings. And Sting has recorded everything from jazz to an album of 16th-century lute music and has written a Tony-nominated Broadway musical. I count myself fortunate to have met all three (all truly nice) and seen them in concert. Each has also written his own autobiography and Andy and Stewart have produced their own “home movies” about The Police (Can’t Stand Losing You: Surviving the Police and Everyone Stares). Might be more than you want to know but I can’t stress enough how amazing this band is! Dive in further to their work and you will not be disappointed.

The Police might just be my favorite band of all time, they were absolutely brilliant together and as separate musicians during their solo work after the band (sort of) split up. Stewart IS a hell of a drummer, he was the founding member of the Police, the band name refers to his father, who was one of the founders of the American CIA. Although we live in the digital age of streaming and MP3s, it wouldn't be a bad investment to buy their Boxed Set of recordings, known as Message In A Box, it has all their recordings save for a few miscellaneous recordings....the box set includes a booklet with the story of The Police, with amazing insight into the band and their songs. If no one else has suggested it, check out their song Synchronicity II, from the album Synchronicity, the video is really cool as well.

Great reaction. Love your enthusiasm. Roxanne was their first single of the first album. This was the first single from the second album, and showed everyone that they were no fluke. Three albums later they would break up, but they were the biggest band in the world at that time.

I used to work for an inventory service back in the 80s. We traveled on a Bluebird bus around America doing inventory on stores. The Police albums Synchronicity and Ghost in the Machine were two cassettes I listened to the most in my Sony Walkman. 😁 Wrapped Around Your Finger, Murder By Numbers and Synchronicity 2 are my faves. But when you react to them you have to watch the official videos. They had some of the most amazing videos on MTV. Wrapped Around Your Finger is my fave...

And this was one of their earlier songs, it just kept getting better! Such a unique voice as Sting's can't be hidden. All his solo work is also worth a listen.🥰

Formed in London, late 70's. 2 Brits (Sting, vocals and bass and Andy Summers, guitar) and a Yank (Stewart Copeland,drummer...one of the all-time greats at that). Their third and fourth albums ,Zenyatta Mondatta and Ghost In The Machine respectively, you can drop the needle on any song and it's a killer.

How about Genesis Follow You Follow Me. That's Phil Collins singing lead who took over from Peter Gabriel. Plus the guitarist is Mike Rutherford from Mike and the Mechanics.

The band is British, the lead chap is Sting. Yes the Sting! He’s from a city called Newcastle. The same place Dire Straits are from, hence why sting appears on their 1985 single Money for Nothing, that you’ve already listened to.

Remember hearing this just once and rushing out to buy it. Still have my copy on bright green vinyl. The Police were like a breath of fresh air and had a sound all their own. Love this, please check out Can't Stand Losing You and Walking On The Moon J

They're brilliant. The singer/bassist is Sting. You reacted to Eva Cassidy a while back. It was a cover of one of his songs. The Police are English reggae-tinged rock. A very specific London genre.

Fun fact: they played this song for the first time live at a place called Hatfield Polytechnic. Sting actually calls the song “I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle”

Many years ago, my college roommate and I (and a couple guys) went to Kansas City to hit "The Uptown." The band was The Police (which I understood was named because Copland's dad was in the CIA). The guys arrived in a beat-up car (which was their "tour bus" for their 1st tour of the US). We were just a few feet from the stage. They were fun and they had a message (and they were really, really good looking). Halfway through their act, they jumped down into the audience, hoping to sell lots of their t-shirts and the first, British version, of their album. I used my weekly food money to pay for 1 of each. They signed both the t-shirt and the album. A few weeks later, I was driving back to college when "Roxanne" came on the radio. I almost drove off the highway! Love these guys then and continue to be a fan of their solo careers.

"Bed's Too Big Without You" from the same album has a monster bass line, best song imo. Btw, with Message In A Bottle, at 1:49 I used to sing "A year has passed since I broke my nose..." - see how that works for you ;-)

I got this album for christmas 1979 when I 16. It was on my list, not because my parents were particularly hip. Though I remember next summer, when my sister’s fellow 5 year old friend from next door - they were all holy rollers - said that her mother said I listened to the devil’s music. My mother said, “Tell your mother that Rock & Roll will live forever.”
