Yes, if you can listen to Eva Cassidy's Version not to mention Nadine Coyle's version as well. She sang this when she auditioned to be in an up and coming girlband called Girls Aloud and on November 30th 2002 she got in and they became one of the biggest Girlbands to come out of the UK. This Video epitomizes how Art Imitates Life or the other way around. In Real Life Sting "was" a Teacher. Alot of folks become Teachers in the UK where the Kids educational system means well but has it's share of problems.

When Sting says "Just like that old man in that book by Nabokov" he's talking about the character Humbert Humbert from Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel "Lolita." Something you should definitely listen to by the Police is "Driven To Tears" followed by "When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around." The two songs are meant to go together and they sound great.

I first heard them as a 6th grader in 1981, thanks to the indie college radio station in my town. They had a lot of great songs in the "ska" style: "Hands Off, She's Mine", "Save It for Later", "I Confess", "Mirror in the Bathroom", "Too Nice to Talk To", "Twist And Crawl", among others.

The first single by The Beat which I remember noticing (and buying!) here in the UK was their cover of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles’ “The Tears of a Clown” - the style of The Beat worked very well for it I thought, and I loved the late Ranking Roger’s vocal contribution as the song faded out. It was their first hit here, in 1979.

One of my favourites is Sting’s They Dance Alone. The song is a metaphor referring to mourning Chilean women (arpilleristas) who dance the Cueca, the national dance of Chile, alone with photographs of their disappeared loved ones in their hands. Sting explained his song as a symbolic gesture of protest against the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet whose regime killed thousands of people between 1973 and 1990. This song was recorded in both English (with some spoken Spanish words by the Panamanian salsa singer, Rubén Blades) and Spanish (with additional lyrics by Roberto Livi). This latter version was titled "Ellas Danzan Solas" and was released on the 1988 EP Nada como el sol.

They have 2 awesome early albums with the reggae beat. Jamaicans coming into England during the 70 and 80 was very influential.

Fun fact 3: they aren’t “pulling songs out of their sleeves”. Sting keep a song book of All the songs that he wrote and he would collaborate with the band snd then open his book and they would write a song from Stings song book. Check out some of Gordon’s early work in his band “Last Exit” you will hear a lot of familiar songs ( ie they were already written when. The police were formed)

The T-Shirt Sting is wearing is from one of my favorite bands The Beat (AKA the English Beat). You must check them out soon, you should start with "Save it for later".

While I am not a great fan of Sting and the Police, his peers speak highly of him and I have much respect for his messages. Good on you, J, and also to my peeps on here recommending their choice of music. 👍✌️

I rediscovered this when I watched glee, they did a pretty good mashup containing this song and Young girl from Gary Pucket an the union gap.

FUN FACT: "Don't Stand..." was rediscovered in 2020 as the perfect COVID19 hymn, promoting social-distancing! In May, Jimmy Fallon did a remote stay-at-home duet with Sting (with Questlove and the band playing the other instruments !).
