The world’s foremost Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan shows us how the parables present throughout the New Testament not only reveal what Jesus wanted to teach but also provide the key for explaining how the Gospels’ writers sought to explain the Prophet of Nazareth to the world. In this meaningful exploration of the metaphorical stories told by Jesus and the Gospel writers, Crossan combines the biblical expertise of his The Greatest Prayer with a historical and social analysis that harkens closely to his Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, creating an illuminating and nuanced exploration of the Scripture that fans of Marcus Borg and Bart Ehrman will find fascinating and essential.

I can't help finding Crossan so much more authoritative and convincing, but at the same time so much more down-to-earth than any of the other Famous Scholars in this field. He's such a great teacher. Thank you for bringing him on.

History Valley is by far the best RU-vid channel for elucidating scripture because Jacob asks intelligent questions and allows his guests to answer uninterrupted.

This is fantastic! I read Crossan's Parables book a few years ago and it resonated so very well with me. Still on my bedside shelf for easy reference. It's been my hope that Crossan would come on History Valley to raise topics he addressed in the book. Easily one of my favorite episodes so far. Great one, Jacob.

People who are dogmatic about Q seem to think only mark can make things up. Matthew can’t? This seems like an odd assumption

Great talk, very interesting. I appreciate professor Crossan scholarship, insight and good nature humor and gift in presenting complex and perplexing ideas in a way easy to follow for a non specialist.

wonderful .. if jesus taught in parables, why in hades would he expect people to take him literally?

I think you're on the right line- wrestling and questioning with God. The bible's full of parables from beginning to end. To me it comes down to you and God, in the here and now; what are you doing with the info you have?

At times, this conversation is interesting but not too relevant to our everyday lives. At other times it is extremely relevant. The conversation took place six months ago and on October 7th violence exploded.

Why should our reading of Romans 13 be a reference civil rather than religious authority? Paul's reference to Jesus as Lord in Romans 1 defied Rome’s claim that the title belongs to Casear alone.

I like Crossan but his conclusion Luke doesn't know Matthew is just bonkers IMO. The author literally states there are MANY other gospels out there but his is the correct version. So this author knows Mark (the least popular gospel) but has never heard of Matthew, the MOST popular gospel? It's just not plausible. Just look at the sermon on the mount in Matthew and the plain in Luke they both start with Jesus only talking to disciples but end talking to crowds of people. Matthew uses Mark 1:22 here but Luke uses Mark 1:22 in a different spot (Luke ch 4), so who is he following for his version? It's clearly Matthew.

There is no Q. If the consensus is that Matthew and Luke both copied Mark. Why isn’t it true that Luke just copied Matthew. That’s more plausible here. Luke after all came after Matthew. Luke just copied Mark and Matthew.

Biblical Scripture destroys Christianity just in one verse in Psalms: No man can save another man, nor can any man be ransom for another. The whole theology of Christianity is founded on the premise that a man, Jesus, saves them. It's a catch 22 for Christians because if they agree with David the Psalmist, their theology is therefore a falsehood. And if they find other Scripture to counter what David the Psalmist says, then there are inconsistencies in Biblical Scripture ----- which means, Biblical Scripture is NOT inerrant.

The NT writers are thinking in terms of the Jewish idea developed during the wars of the Maccabees that the faithful actions and words of martyrs created sufficient merit in God’s estimation that the nation as a whole could be saved in its struggles, through God’s intervention. The failures of one group of people could be forgiven by appealing to the service done by a few others that they were connected to. To early Christians Jesus did not suffer a punishment, he honoured God through obedience in life and death. He died for the benefit of his followers, he did not die instead of them as a substitute.

@craigfairweather3401 Christian theology is contrary to Scripture. You can believe Jesus is your Savior, but a notion in your mind is not truth. Scripture is ubiquitously clear, each person must bear his own burden. Each person must carry his own cross. Jesus himself states this. Christian theology is false teaching, and only the ignorant take the bait. Awaken!
