In this episode, Professor Emeritus John Dominic Crossan returns to History Valley to discuss the Cross Gospel and the Resurrection.
In the year 1950, John graduated from St Eunan's College, a boarding high school after this, Crossan joined the Servites, a Catholic religious order, and moved to the United States. He was trained at Stonebridge Seminary, Lake Bluff, Illinois, then ordained a priest in 1957. Crossan returned to Ireland, where he earned his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1959 at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, the Irish national seminary. He then completed two more years of study in biblical languages at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. In 1965 Crossan began two additional years of study (in archaeology) at the Ecole Biblique in Jordanian East Jerusalem. During this time, he travelled through several countries in the region, escaping just days before the outbreak of the Six-Day War of 1967. After a year at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois, and a year at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Crossan chose to resign his priesthood. In the fall of 1969 he joined the faculty of DePaul University, where he taught undergraduates comparative religion for 26 years until retiring in 1995. He has written thirty three books on the historical Jesus in the last fifty six years, four of which have become national religious bestsellers: The Historical Jesus (1991), Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography (1994), Who Killed Jesus (1995), and The Birth of Christianity (1998). He is a former co-chair of the Jesus Seminar, and a former chair of the Historical Jesus Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, an international scholarly association for biblical study based in the United States.

Jacob, capturing John Dominic Crossan for another couple of hours this quarter is a huge win for your viewers. I so appreciate JDC and the fact that he essentially knows what there is to be known...and he can explain it logically, rationally and with goodness. I appreciate this man as I suspect your other patreon members do. Thank you for bringing back JDC as often as is possible. His work and what it does for me, matters enormously. Thank you. KH

Outstanding, Jacob, both Crossan’s lecture as well as your success as having him as a guest.

Marvelous lecture, really, by Crossan, putting his invaluable work on the Cross Gospel (which obviously continues to be too ingenious for pretty much all other scholars to follow him) in the much more important context of the Universal Resurrection - and even more importantly his views on non-violence as the only way of moving forward in this mad world. Undoubtedly one day Crossan will be considered not only the foremost New Testament historian, but quite possibly the foremost theologian (in the best and broadest sense of that word) of our time.

Excellent discussion! Very key points in trying to analyse the mind bending suicidal violence of the last 2,000 years. Calling Dr. Freud. Calling Dr. Jung. Stat. I am hard at work on my own book.

After listening carefully and attentively, it is quite obvious to the meaning of all of this. Jesus represents the awakening of our spiritual essence and this is the process of transforming the human race. Jesus is not an individual, but a metaphor representing this transformation coming from the Source of all Life, God.

Great video - but if I can offer some criticism. It's a bit jarring to interrupt Dr Crossan mid-presentation to answer a superchat. And a little bit rude too. And with more than one question! Just a thought, best to leave superchats til the end if someone is actually presenting something with slides etc. Great video nonetheless

30:38 Nice to compare those two accounts of the resurrection (& surrounding events). My guess is that if the Gospel of Peter were canonical and the Gospel of Matthew had been dug up at Nag Hammadi, then people would laugh at Matthew just as much as they laugh at Peter.

Honestly I feel like the Gospel of Peter examples are all drastically easier to see as someone trying to improve on Matthew then to think that Matthew used the gospel of Peter.

I could be wrong, but having been raised Roman Catholic, I thought both the individual resurrection of Jesus after crucifixion and the so-called harrowing of Hell salvation of the previous dead from Adam to Jesus were true. Both events are believed to have happened, even in the West. The iconography may focus on different scenes, yes, but both versions are taught, I thought.

HADES is the place of all the dead in the eastern tradition. HELL is the place of punishment for some of the dead. The "harrowing of hell" is a western attempt to include the eastern version and it is a theological disaster--as St. Augustine recognized. East is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet---easily.

Save the questions for the end of Dr Crossan's lecture!!!!!!! Please do not interrupt your guest's train of thought...He was just about to talk about the difference between Peter's Gospel and the Synoptic Gospels treatment of the Resurrection.

I can understand why gPeter featured a talking cross. When the Romans set up their basic _crux,_ it was in the shape of a 'T'. When they added the _titulus_ with its signpost right above the crossbeam at the post, the frame resembled a man standing erect in the normal sense of the word. When they added the peg, either standing out in front of the post for penetration or jutting out from it horizontally for support at crotch level, the complete _crux_ resembled a man who is erect in both senses of the word. (Pozzuoli Graffito, Vivat Crux Graffito, Seneca Minor, Moral Epistles 101.10-14)

Which is obtainable? Personal salvation or universal salvation?

"And the head of him ... overpassing the heavens". I get an image of a genie which has come out of a bottle, a giant form in the sky. And that image could well have come from Paul, who speaks of a seed being planted and the wheat coming from it - the point being that the wheat is much bigger than the seed. Paul may well have seen the risen Jesus as a giant form in the sky, much like the God which spoke to King Arthur in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

A very informative on the differences of East and West in the interpretation of the term "resurrection" but the (his@East) conclusion as if ALL humans were liberated from Hell/Hades is contra just simple plain (divine) logic and justice and also Scripture itself (the sin contra Holy Spirit - without the possibility of God's mercy@just very common in this dumb world ruled by Satan (Luke 4:6, Ap12:12;etc.,,,), a murderer and liar (J8:44). Plus a lot of theological (i.e. logical and philosophical naiveness typical to almost all Bible scholars) Jesus himself used a violence contra thieves (Cezar's and Temple's) John 2:15@all Synoptics) and Jesus's disciple carried swords for sure, not as souvenirs; Jesus himself ordered to use swords (Luke 22:36) for a perfect goal to defend themselves and kill the enemies (if words do not count anymore- an obvious divine conclusion despite some Church's and naive pacifists' ethical stupidity (in RC liturgical readings Satans at the Vatican cut of "troubling" passages like Elijah killing Baal's priests (1 Kings 18:40, "Moses" holocausting his own brothers (Exodus 32:28) or the killing of the tax collector of the king"by all Israel"(1 Kg 12:18).

You can't understandxpharisaic judaism and the idea of hades being emptied unless you understand the Zoroastrian tradition that at the end of time all those asleep in the grave will rise and hades will be emptied.
