This video is a discussion of some of the foundational issues with the theology of Gerhard Forde. In particular, I delve into questions of philosophy and the inspiration of Scripture.

Forde’s “On Being a Theologian of the Cross” is outstanding.

I’ve found Paulson’s exposition of Luther pretty helpful. Joseph Prince seems to have come to similar conclusions independently

Dr. Cooper, I’ve been listening to the “Outlaw God” podcast series from the 1517 network featuring Dr. Paulson. I have found it very interesting and informative especially the critique of medieval scholasticism. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on Paulson’s books the Outlaw God or know anything more about it? I have not heard him express his views you’ve mentioned in the series concerning Scripture. Your insight is greatly appreciated

A lot of Coopers critique is true or rooted in truth, but contrary to how many hardline confessional Lutherans would imply, you don’t have to disregard someone’s entire work because they don’t align with you completely. Paulson and Forde bring a lot to the table. To write them off because their hermeneutics aren’t as conservative as yours is the equivalent of cancelling someone. Outlaw God is great.

Thanks for taking a stand against radical Lutheranism and it's liberalizing effect on Lutheranism.

Does 'The Bondage of the Will' teach double predestination?
@user-nj1rc9hk4h
@user-nj1rc9hk4h 3 года назад
No. Double predestination is a calvinian opinion and not biblical at all, just a logical presumption.

@@user-nj1rc9hk4h Then why does Luther seem to teach it in 'The Bondage of the Will'?

@@user-nj1rc9hk4h Martin Luther even believed in Limited Atonement.
@StBindo

@@ethanhocking8229 Martin Luther explicitly rejected limited atonement in the Bondage of the Will. Note his Hidden and Preached God distinction. You're referring to his commentary on Romans, which is the only place where he seemed to teach a version of limited atonement. He changed his view, and it was never the calvinist view of limited atonement. He still affirmed that Christ died for those who came to faith and then fell away. Remember, he also believed someone could lose their salvation at this time. Which he believed until his death. But as far as double predestination, it does seem like he taught that in BOTW. But he explicitly rejected it in his commentary on genesis, which came much later, and he even references his views expressed in Bondage. I'm assuming you're reformed. Luther wasnt. He did not teach double predestination.

@user-nj1rc9hk4h 3 года назад
@@ethanhocking8229 NO, NO, NO!!! This is a big misunderstanding of Luther's thought. Calvin's though is also misinterpreted, especially by the so called calvinists. Now what Calvin did write? Calvin taught this ''“We assert that by an eternal and immutable counsel, God has once for all determined both whom he would admit to salvation and whom he would condemn to destruction” ( Institutes 3.21.7)''. Do you find in any of Luther's writings something like this? This is ''double predestination. I admit that Calvin put it in a context that it is different from the one the calvinists say and declare this. Luther wrote this 'I hear that here and there among the nobles and persons of importance vicious statements are being spread abroad concerning predestination or God’s foreknowledge. For this is what they say: ‘If I am predestined, I shall be saved, whether I do good or evil. If I am not predestined, I shall be condemned regardless of my works.’ . . . If the statements are true, as they, of course, think, then the incarnation of the Son of God, His suffering and resurrection, and all that He did for the salvation of the world are done away with completely. What will the prophets and all Holy Scripture help? What will the sacraments help?” Also, read St Bindo's answer.

Been a Christian 50 years (since 1971), came out of Rome. For many decades I have been helped more than words can express by Luther's 1531 Galatians (in Luther's Works Vol. 26, 27, which is a better translation than others). I have also been radically helped by G. Forde in his essay "the Christian Life" in 'Christian Dogmatics', Vol. 2, PAGES 403-419. I have never read a better treatment on justification (through faith alone) as it relates to the life in Christ than this one!! through my understanding of Paul, I DON"T agree with many other things in this book (CD Vol. 2), even by Forde, he's human; but those pages 403-419, esp. 403-409) are OUTSTANDING. Seek and you shall find; don't judge Gerhard Forde by others; see for yourself. Most Lutherans (even pastors) do not own and have not owned and read Luther on Galatians. So don't judge Luther by Lutherans or Lutheran leaders. the Book of Concord was put together 40 years after he died; he would not agree with some of it; he was too much like Paul for their tastes; they wanted "concord".

Just commenting for those who may be scrolling through comments... The LCMS, the AALC, and the WELS are guided in theology first by Holy Scripture and second by the unaltered (1580) Lutheran Confessions. Luther was -AN- author of the confessions, but not the sole author. Lutherans, despite the misleading name, are not bound to everything that Luther taught, wrote, and preached.

If these men were so unorthodox where are the debates? NO EXIT is the way Luther felt for DECADES, until he found a copy of Romans
